- I have updated OM-1 M1 and taken it out for a few hours to see if OM System managed to improve the AF on the camera for birds in both photo and video. See this episode where i will share my impression and thougts on this update!
There is a lot of positive feedback about this update. Good video Dennis.
Nice they finally got the FW out. Thanks Roger
Amazing firmware update. A big LIKE from Singapore.
Great news about the subject tracking AF in video! I will have to try it out soon myself. Thanks for sharing your findings Dennis :)
Thank you for feedback :)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience Dennis 👍
🙏🏻😁
Wooow I didn't even consider the OM-1 Mk 1 for bird photography, but this is awesome !
Its great for photographing birds 👍😁
I use the OM-D E-M10 Mark II for street photography but this is a much better camera...
Those images are sharp. Watching the BIF shots was like watching a video instead of a sequence of stills. This video does a great job explaining what the system can do.
Thanks for your comment :) appreciated!
I have the OM-1 Mark II and M.Zuiko 150-400 and that's one system I'II never sell Dennis;)
Its a super combo! :)
Same. It's unbeatable
My experience with firmware v1.7 is similar to yours. I have not done much video but what I have done the AF seems better. For stills I am finding that I can use All Points AF most of the time with much better results than with the previous version. I have really enjoyed using it so far.
I havent tried video, but in photo mode it is more stickier then before, it is very noticable. Lots of situations where it struggled before it holds focus now.
I agree, faster to lock on and its stays on better 😁
After installing the firmware update, my camera would no longer start up. Tried everything. Had to ship it to OM for repair. Haven't heard a word from them. They can use it for a door stop for all I care.
Sorry to hear 😕 Hope you get it back soon
Nice shots on the skedand Dennis ! Ronny
Thank you :)
Dennis, have you adjusted your focussing sensitivity settings with the new firmware?
No i just shoot with the same settings as before the update. The only difference was i used AF area ALL to test and it grapped the birds nicely :)
Havent made the system change yet, currently on Canon 5d mk iv, but cant decide on Om-1 mk i or mk ii... This update seems to have moved them more together performance wise?
I 🙂would go for M2 if i was new to the system. I just dont think its worth the upgrade for M1 if you already have it. The M2 should be better and have future support firmware wise .. i dont think M1 gets any more firmware from now on.
@@DennisJacobsenWildlife Thanks for the reply, I pulled the trigger on the M2 and the 90mm f/3,5 Macro, since I mostly do in that sized objects, so excited to see the results, might gonna go for the teleconverter aswell. :)
@@Nordic-vs7nl Sounds great, i think you will be wery happy with that camera!
I am curious to see how it does with hummingbirds. In my experience they are too small and their flight pattern too different from regular birds for the OM-1 bird detection. I generally need to use only the center focusing point (in the smallest version) to be able to lock onto the hummingbird
Hi Dennis, thanks for your video. My Om-1 (Mk 1) is new and has v 1.4 at the moment. Should I first upgrade to 1.5 and then 1.6 before I upgrade to 1.7?
Thanks 😁 uhh i dont know if you can “skip” the in between versions 🤔 maybe you can find info on their FW site 🙂📷🎥
The video is run in 4k or 120 thank you nice video
Thanks, ok good for birds but it was already pretty good with birds before, could we check if it can also shoot a person? because a machine to deal only and exclusively with birds has a much more limited audience than those who want to use it for more general purposes. And I like avifauna. But since I don't only do that I would be interested in understanding if the eye and face of human beings is finally in focus, because so far in this sense it has gone much worse than with birds.
I need to know for sure before buying it.
Thank you
Thanks for your feedback 🙂 I have personally only used the camera for birds, landscape and street photos and never had any problems there. People is the one thing i dont photograph that often but i will try to include some different stuff next time i do a video like this 👍🏻😁
then use Sony APS-C system with lightweight setup, if you are primary focused on humans. A6700 autofocus is probably much better and still for myself OM is mainly for travel photography with focus on animals.
@@pentagramyt417 I don't want to buy any more lenses, I have a micro 4/3 kit and I think they are the best lenses out there, especially the olympus ones. I don't like sony apsc lenses. It shouldn't be hard to spot people's eyes if you can get the animals' ones...
@@DennisJacobsenWildlife thank you
You should look at the OM-1 Mk II if you what to track people. It has a new AI-based "person' tracking capability that is not a part of the OM-1 Mk I firmware update discussed here.
Hi Dennis, for photographing, do you use Autofocus setting AF or AF+tracking? They say the AF-Tracking is not as good as AF.
I use C-AF with bird tracking and in video you need to ude +TR for the bird tracking to work
@@DennisJacobsenWildlife Thanks Dennis.
hi Dennis
Thank you very much for this informative video. How is the OM-1 with the now improved AF compared to your Nikon camera combination?
I think the OM-1 is up there with the other brands in photo AF with birds :) video Z9 is still superior
@@DennisJacobsenWildlife hi Dennis
thank you for your quick response and answer. I am considering buying an Om-system in addition to my Canon R3, due to the heavy weight of my Canon set. Om-system is working hard on its way. Many UA-cam celebrities have declared the Om-system dead for years, but the reality is that it is alive and well and gives many people a lot of photo pleasure. thanks again for this review👍👏
@@theflyingdutchman7127 because they get paid for promoting fullframe lobby or have weird intention in that.
@@theflyingdutchman7127 Ha! We should all be as healthy as the "dead" MFT format. 😀
I didn't notice anything, other than my programs was reset. But then again, I haven't been out of town to try bif, yet.
The OM1II is a little better. If you also photograph people it`s much better.
That's just the way it is, but the OM-1 Mark 1 is currently being offered with high-quality lenses in a bundle, I ordered an OM-1 with the 12-40 and 40-150 Pro for €2499 today, I'm excited!
This bundle with the Mark 2 will certainly cost €1200 more.
Okay :) thanks for the info
@@ruhri0411 So sad they don't do OM1MARKII bundle, or at least add 300 mm f4 pro to the bundle with OM1..
@@pentagramyt417 The M1 is a discontinued model, they will have to clear the shelves.
@@ruhri0411 I think you will love that combination. For many people - and I'm one - the enhancements of the OM-1 Mk II don't justify an upgrade. Those two PRO lenses are fantastic glass and I predict you will be very, very pleased.
