Hm you have a very different approach to colour-correcting than a lot of other videos. In terms of exposure and the luma waveform, most people I've watched tend to 0 the shadows, 100 the highlights, and try to bring the midtones to the middle. Is this approach you take specific to underwater footage and do you have a different approach for standard footage? Do you typically use any LUTs over the whole thing?

I know that a lot of people drag the shadows to 0, the highlights to 100 and try to middle out thee midtones. Personally I just like my footage to be not too contrasty and over time I have learned that using this approach, I like how my footage turns out the best.
No, this is not something I do specifically for underwater footage only. I do like a little less contrast in all of my clips, whether they've been filmed underwater or topside.
Regarding LUTs, no, I do not use LUT's for my underwater footage. Simply because I haven't found any LUTs specific to underwater footage that I really like. I thought about creating my own underwater LUTs for different situations (blue water, green water, deep water, shallow water, etc). Do you think that's something that many underwater filmers would benefit of?

To be honest LUTs are tricky. Personally I find the ‘artistic’ or ‘cinematic’ LUTs to be so subjective to the authors taste that they’re generally not useful to me. The LUTs I’ve enjoyed are the ones that bring natural colours back from flat profiles like SLOG or HLG or the flat profiles in action cameras like the DCINELIKE on the Osmo Action.
I would personally appreciate LUTs that ‘normalise’ colours for different profiles and depths (eg the equivalent of having those pink/red/purple filters on the camera).

I see what you're saying and I do agree. Thanks for your input, very valuable. I'll try to create some LUTs sometime in the near future and will make them available for download here on the channel. Let's see, maybe I can help other divers that film occasionally underwater to create better uw-clips..?! 😊

That’d definitely be nice and something of a niche 😀

@@MatthiasLebo While my experience in UW filming is limited to grabbing an action camera, jumping in, and making sure I don't step on a stone-fish or urchin I'd be happy to help by providing links/material on flat-to-natural LUTs I've researched for my devices (Osmo Action, Mavic 2 Pro, and Sony A7 III). I believe you have different devices but it might help so lemme know 😋.

Matthias! great videos! can you please check out some of the videos in my channel? the ones marked as (4k)... I use a GH5 as well, and would like your feedback!

I would recommend starting with the Rankin or Hydro Atlantic... usually our shots are very dark as most of the wrecks are on tech depths.

Thanks for your feedback. Really appreciate it. 🙏🏻😊
Just had a look at your channel. Very impressive. I love your dedication to wreck diving. Your channel is very clean and structured. I like that a lot. Your videos are good. What did you film the older videos with? You can clearly see how since you've switched to the GH5, which I assume is a bigger rig than what you were using before, your camera movements have become a lot smoother and calmer. Maybe it's the GH5's stabilization, maybe the larger rig or maybe you've just become a better underwater cameraman. 😉
I also like the information pieces in the videos. I think though, that your videos would benefit quite a bit from having a voice over talking about the facts that you share in writing and also give the viewers some insight on what it felt like to dive this specific wreck.
I would also consider making a video about what is needed preparation-wise to be able to dive one of these wrecks. Just as an idea. 😉
Nice work mate, keep it up! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
      Cheers
      Matthias

@@MatthiasLebo Thanks a lot for the feedback!! As a matter of fact, I am working on the voiceovers moving forward hehehe... I did try that on some of our videos from Argentina Diving and it was pretty well received! Previously I had a Sony Camcorder and a GoPro... also definitely worse lights (for the type of wrecks I do, we are mostly tec, hence deep, lighting becomes an important factor). As said, thank you very much for the feedback, I will most sure work on those points! I also hope we keep in touch!!!
