The Kassel tramway is operated today by the Kasseler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (KVG) and has existed since 1877. It first ran like a steam tram from Wilhelmshöhe to Königsplatz, later followed by horse-drawn trams, and the electric tram at the turn of the century. The gauge is 1432 mm (tolerant to standard gauge). There was also a meter gauge network with the Herkulesbahn and a trolley bus between Harleshausen, Kirchditmold, and Wilhelmshöhe. Today, the tramway is the backbone of public transport in Kassel and is gradually being extended into the surrounding area, which is why the network now has a total route length of about 75 kilometers. In addition to the conventional tram, a tram-train system based on the "Karlsruhe model" was established after the turn of the millennium, the RegioTram Kassel, with which continuous journeys between the Deutsche Bahn rail network and the inner-city tram network could be realized.
