Previn was a legend in the English repertoire in the 1970's, and you can hear why. Nothing forced, letting the music speak for itself, but everything under control. Fantastic! I have many of his recordings on black vinyl that I bought way back then.
The coins perhaps unconsciously reflect the character of Elgar’s Symphony No 1 - pure gold from the first bar to the last. Romantic yet never maudlin or shallow, complex and brilliantly crafted every single moment. Not a second is padded or wasted. No wonder Richard Strauss admired it, and much as I admire Strauss’ work, so much of that composer’s output seems contrived next to the Elgar. A work of the heart, yet with such amazing detail and construction. This symphony IS England.
As fine a recorded version as I have ever heard. Reminds me in many ways of Barbirolli's recording with the Philharmonia. The detail is even clearer with Previn. His Elgar and Vaughan Williams were very good and I thought he was magnificent in the music of Walton.

It's nice to hear a recording other than the usual ones. Super!
Almost uncirculated gold coins of King Edward VII !
I just consistently don't feel anything when Previn's on the podium. He's dead so, now I feel like I can say that.
