  • Parsom Weem's Fable is part of American mythology. Grant Wood paints Parsom Weem's Fable, acknowledging the fact that it's a myth, but also points out that this mythology isn't as pure as it tries to paint itself to be. Parson Weem's Fable tries to show a sinless George Washington, a pure Washington, while you see the same George Washington owning slaves.

This really sounds like the complete opposite of what Grant Wood was trying to do, even though he seemed to have irony and such cleverness in his work. He had said that he was concerned that these American myths had become endangered, and had a real value for the American people, and he wanted to preserve them, but he was also a very smart and informed man who was critical of much of the history and, at the time, current state of the United States, and of the culture that he lived in, both the regional and the larger aspects of culture of the United States at the time, and he wasn't shy about voicing it. His is a fascinating and singular voice among staunchly individual, American artists. I find him and his work fascinating, and filled with mystery. We don't know much about his private life... Just brilliant. Really smart and subtle, and filled with detail and subtlety and nuance, and irony and intelligence, but also love and reverence for something very wholesome and old fashioned American values. Just brilliant...

I don’t think it’s bad to have national fables or myths; frankly, it’s quite human. I wouldn’t even say Wood thought that.
