My favorite was married with children. Earlier, 87-97, but still. Dad was the only one that worked and everyone made fun of how little he got paid. Off his barely a paycheck he could support his wife and 2 kids, lived in a 2 story house next to 2 bankers, his house had a basement, attached garage, at least 3 bedrooms, and we saw the parents and sons bedrooms had their own bathrooms so it's likely so did the daughters.
It didn’t dawn on me til just now: the juxtaposition of Malcolm not being fazed by his grandmother suing them and being horrified that his mom is pregnant. It says so much about this family dynamic. It’s also hilarious.
I love how they all agree how their mother being pregnant is a terrible thing. Seriously look at their lives and think about the costs of another child

People who have more children that they can't afford needs to start receiving some form of punishment for making everyone else in the family pay for her mistakes. brilliant, there are about 10 jokes in 2.31 minutes scene, the rythm keeps on speeding and everyone is shouting their weird personality: the evil granma, the angry mom, the kid who's nut, etc
What makes this show stand out above most other sitcoms is the lack of laugh tracks. It doesn't need to tell the viewers when to laugh since the jokes are actually good.

And for a show with kid actors, where you have limited time to film, this was a huge risk but it paid off. Felt way more real, like you were really there with them, in a set with four walls and not three.
1:11 - 1:14 I completely agreed with Francis when I first saw this episode. I normally don't try to pass judgment on how many kids a couple decides to have, but for all Lois and Hal's complaints about how unfair their financial struggles are, they never seem to acknowledge that at least a large amount of them are because of how many kids they've had to raise over the years. And then they somehow decide it's the world's fault in the end and say it's Malcolm's job to fix by becoming president despite this episode wanting to keep the boys out of adult issues. Not to mention the irrefutable fact that the minimum age requirement for the job is thirty-five, and they've already established they don't have the patience and grace to wait seventeen more years.
That is called "dramatic irony". The family is always struggling and thinking they're trying hard and deserve better, but actually all their failures are their own fault. They don't see it, but the audience does.

Hal & Dewey bicker about fancy gadgets, Lois steps in to put it to finanical stability, but ends up caving and spending 12K on a dollhouse. It catches fire and they have no water (for lack of paying the bills) to put it out.
That's not dramatic irony, that's ordinary irony. Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something that the actors don't. For example in an inspector calls Mr birling is praising the titanic and how unsinkable it is but it had sunk before the story was written.@@softy8088

I didn't realize how this show reinvented family sitcoms. Without it, we would not have shows like The Middle, Young Sheldon, Fresh Off The Boat and many others. It is crazy how I love that show this much.
Yeah it pretty much spawned the modern day single cam sitcom. So much so that multi-cam shows with a laugh track seem outdated and annoying now. Just look at the backlash to the format change in the Young Sheldon spin-off
According's to the trivia section of the episode's wiki page, Piama was to have an important scene with Lois. With her worried that Ida would win the case in which she wins the house and kick the family out, Hal and Lois go to jail, and the CPS take the boys and put them into a foster home with the possibility of the baby ending up in Ida's custody, Piama assures Lois she and Francis will not let that happen. Therefore, she says they will take custody of the boys and have them live with them in New Mexico. We all know more trouble would have happened if they ended up living there similar to what happened last time they went to the ranch. However, this would have been a very nice thing coming from Piama.
pretty interesting tbh. i think that, even as a small 3 episode arc would’ve been pretty cool to see. the boys all respect francis so seeing him to actually be a father to them would’ve been pretty interesting to watch

Whenever I went over my sketchy friends house as a kid, their family life was pretty much just like this. Utter chaos whenever more than 1 is in a room. Yet somehow with all the drama, they would even go out of the way to cause, bait and invent even more drama. Like school was bad enough for me, but to come home to a chaotic home life, the only escape is somehow staying out of the house and hanging out with even sketchier people on the streets who've got no safe home either.

This was the scene was my mom announced she was having my baby brother. She was so happy too, and we just shut that happiness right down quick with a tantrum. I was so pissed, and yes, I even said “How could you do this to me??” 😂 I love telling everyone that story. Even the day we first saw him in the hospital I remember scowling at him. But you know when he got home it was cute aggression from me for the next two years. I love all my brothers so much.

Rewatching the show and it really bothers me absolutely no one brings up abortion as an option. It’s very out of place in a show like this that likes to go against the grain in terms of traditional family values.

Im sorry but Hal and Lois are the biggest idiots ever. They complain that their lives have gotten worse financially and emotionally because of having so many kids but continue to have kids. Whats the logic in that? And they are hypocrites, they reacted as badly as their children about hearing the news.

Rewatching the show and it really bothers me absolutely no one brings up abortion as an option. It’s very out of place in a show like this that likes to go against the grain in terms of traditional family values.
