    One solution to your flash not firing I forgot to mention is that you have 'flash firing' turned off in your cameras menu. Any other problems or solutions that I missed? Let me know in the comments!

    One solution I learned for getting the light off-axis when there's nothing to bounce off of was from watching one of your on-the-job live streams: Use a radio transmitter for the flash, and hold the flash up and off to the side in order to create directional light.

    Thank you for your time and knowledge! Your videos are far more informative of the important things than other channels. Been binge watching them the last 2 weeks. I did my first event last weekend. 8 hours at a huge Bday party. Your tips helped tremendously!

    I know this video is a year old but I have a question, I just shot an event and got a new flash (usually do video work) the event had a red carpet thing and behind them was a lit sign people would stand in front of making them dark to the camera, I thought the flash would be great to fill them on (speedlight camera mounted) but the flash would not fire at all. I am thinking it sees and my camera sees the light so it didn't want to work. I had it on ttl and my camera all on auto as well (was run and gun shooting all day) I even tried the flash on manual and it wouldn't fire. Does my camera need to be on manual too to work? Lucky I brought a couple small studio lights and stand that I set up so I got them lit (thank goodness for bringing more than I think I need) Thanks

      Check to see if your camera has an "enable flash firing" setting. Its a new flash so I doubt anything is wrong with it. Another option, though, would be to check to make sure your hotshoe is clean and not lose. Over time, the hotshoe can come lose on older cameras. If that's the case, you can youtube a video on how to tighten it (doubt this is the issue). Let me know what you find out.

      @@MikMilman my camera is the Sony A7iv so pretty new, never used flash on it so the shoe is tight. when the flash is attached I do see an indicator that shows Flash attached so the camera was registering it. I will have to play with it more I guess. I can set up a back light directly at the camera and see if I can get the flash to work somehow lol thanks.

      @@ExploreTravelTV Try bumping up your shutter speed, that will cut down on the ambient light which should get the flash to fire when there is bright ambient light. The easiest way is to switch to Shutter Priority and set it as fast as your camera will allow, which is probably 1/200 or 1/250. If you need faster shutter speeds while using flash you will need to turn on HSS in your camera if it has that option, although that will reduce the range of your flash.

    Hi Mik, new subscriber here, I've just found your channel and really appreciate your video's and content. You mentioned green walls, what would your solution be for greenish walls, is there gels?

    Could you please tell me about white balance with flash. Which one should you use with flash? And when do you put colour gels? And what would you use for the camera white balance?

    • @MikMilman
      @MikMilman  Рік тому

      You can just leave your camera's white balance at AWB. While the flash is attached it will adjust for it. The flash is daylight balanced by the way. I almost never even bother with gels in all honesty.

      A big banquet hall has yellow lighting, and the flash is daylight balanced, should I still use the camera white balance at AWB? Or should I custom set my camera to fluorescent, flash, daylight, or a dialed in K temp? Perhaps use a gel to match the room with the flash?
      Glad I found your UA-cam.
