At Lords!! That’s amazing! I have an Atlas too. I have a bible even though I’m not religious. It should be normal to have good reference material in book form I think.
I love that you still appreciate these gifts and the people who gave them to you. Oxford English Dictionary, 2-volume set, wonderful . I wish we still had ours. We still have our Hertz, though!
I have a physical pocket atlas that I've had since I was a small kid in Russia. It was printed in 1988. It's just so adorably tiny and houses such a big world. I look at it once in while, it's more of a historical guidance now. Also, I give my teen niece and nephew books on holidays and birthdays (including a recent bar mitzvah) - one loves reading, the other reads but less enthusiastically. I do it not only to cultivate a love of reading, but I choose books that'll take them away from their bubble a bit.
It seemed like a reasonable destination venue in my day. No idea if anyone has barmitzvah parties there anymore. My nephew had his party in London Zoo!
It’s so awesome that you still have your Momentos and memories of a very important time in your life. I’ve been to several bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah and there’s nothing like it.
i don't know how i aquired it but as a teenager i spent many an hour reading from bartlett's book of quotations...and memorizing many of them..and tearing up over lies such as these. Throw out the lifeline! Throw out the lifeline! Someone is drifting away; Throw out the lifeline! Throw out the lifeline! Someone is sinking today.. thanks for the fun trip down memory lane.
Thank you for sharing your memories. Such lovely inscriptions in your books. I have a big Reader's Digest Atlas (wish I still had my old paperback one from when I was at junior school), and not an encyclopaedia, but Chronicle of the 20th Century - a juggernaut of a book!
Wow, the memories you brought up for my own Bat Mitzvah (many more years ago than yours)! Lovely video, thanks for sharing! (P.S. you mentioned that girls had Bat Mitzvah at 12, but it was 13 for girls as well, at least at the temples I belonged to here in the U.S.. Did I misunderstand what you said?). Anyway, love your videos, please keep them coming! You read many different authors than I do, so I really enjoy the exposure to new authors.
I thought a juggernaught was a giant wave .... you never stop to learn. ... and I still have my first school Atlas , long out of date concerning man made borders , but the rivers and mountains are still there.
Lateral question - would you describe yourself as a cricket fan? Just wondered if your parents chose to hold the Barmitzvah at Lords because you or your family were cricket mad. BTW we did have physical atlases at home when I grew up. I don't own one now, but I miss them
Always been a cricket fan. Got it from my mum. Not only did we host the party at Lords, but the theme of the evening was cricket, with a cricket pitch cake and all the tables were named after cricketing counties.

I am a big fan of keeping physical reference books. I have several dictionaries and I often refer to more than on when we're looking up a word.

I've been blessed to always have room to keep them around and I have a very understanding wife!
I have an Atlas and every so often I like to leaf through it. Love this edition of your vlog, by the way.
Thank you. This was a fun one for me also.

I like a huge atlas where I can really pore over the pages and work out where everywhere is.
Wonderful to be able to share this . Thankyou ..i went to several Bat Mitzvah parties in North London a decade earlier .but none at Lords !

Books of quotations are endless sources of joy for bookish children.

Even if I didn't at the time, I have come to appreciate all the reference books I received as gifts back then.
What a treasure of books and lovely memories! Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed watching this immensely!
That's very kind, thanks.
I can feel your grandfather when you were twelve as my descendants grow up and soon without me.
Not too soon, I hope.
@@GuiltyFeat Still have some reading to do, but in 25 years you will know what your grandfather knew and felt, darling Daniel.

We definitely did 12 for girls and 13 for boys when I was growing up. Glad to have surfaced happy memories for you!

Thanks for sharing. Nothing wrong with remembering how the world used to look.
I loved watching this. Thank you for sharing.
Thank YOU!
Those books all sound familiar - I think between my sons we have them somewhere or similar. G-d Bless
Thank you Andi!
