Thanks for doing this episode guys. I've really been thinking about moving toward a cartridge system. My only hold back is the cost of the grips. Do you mind me asking how you are sterilizing your grips. Is it more of a cold sterilization? I feel like the autoclave would be hard on them.
+Fats Staats I just wrap my grip with a plastic barrier and then either a disposable grip cover or coban. When I break it down, I just wipe it with madacide. The cartridges are worth trying out. They are making some disposable grips that take cartridges as well.
Disposable cartridge grips can work on ANY machine, you just may need to buy an adaptor. The disposable cartridge grips are about the same price as a standard disposable tube. I prefer Tat-Souls disposable grip and they're about $1 a grip. When it comes to cartridges i definitely think disposable is the way to go. No point to even think about using metal grips, you really need to autoclave them between uses. Not fully sterilizing grips between uses is lazy and careless and could lead to cross contamination. Try telling your health inspector that you just wrap the metal grip and wile it down with madicide and see how he reacts...

Hi there. I have a Cheyenne Thunder and having some problems with changing the throw? There's so much difference between the shirt and long you can change it regarding of what your tattooing. Do I just use the standard size of nickel and dime (longer throw for shading shorter for lining etc?) Adjusting the voltage is tricky too. I obviously increase for lining but I'm having trouble finding a good voltage for a smooth shade that doesn't tear up the skin. Seems like the Lower the voltage the more damage I do. Thanx in advance!
Cool video, but 1 thing im confused about, if you buy a grip that uses cartridges but doesn't have a way of adjusting needle depth how do you adjust that? for example some people have a liner sitting well out of the tube, personal preference how would you go about adjusting that with a standard cartridge grip?
Hello, thank you for the video as always it is very helpful. I use cartridges and I am considering the disposable grips that go with them, I am wondering, if I do use both disposable cartridges and grips, will the plunger still require an autoclave or is it in a safe zone? Thank you for your time.
+Julian Mansour The Plungers do not come with the cartridge itself but If you buy the disposable cartridge grips, they do come with plungers. The plungers are basically just needle bars with a rubber tip I believe so they are disposable. Do an image search of FK Irons RPG disposable grip and you'll see what I mean.
What’s up man I use a hummingbird bronc s, it’s my first rotary and my first machine that uses cartridges. It’s going great but one thing, is there a way to adjust needle length with them so I can float my needle a little more? I use big wasp cause they come a great length but the others I’ve used I can’t see the needle while running
I'm just learning with cartridges, I've been an artist for almost 10 years but these are new to me. is it common for the needle to stay sticking out of the cartridge when I stop my machine? I'm not even sure lol

I use intenze true black ink.. I'm getting thick scabs I have controled my machine speed and even I'm not going for skin damage.. so I think the ink is little thick so bcoz of that Im getting thick scab..is it possible sir?
Quick question about running cartridges on a coil machine. Being that the actually cartridge is spring loaded what affect does this have on the spring setup/throw of the machine? What is the ideal give setup on a coil machine to use a cartridge system, do you just use your liner, shader and packer as you normally would?
I wish I had a good answer. I only started using cartridges after I moved to rotaries. Hopefully one of our viewers has more experience than me on the matter. It makes sense that the stiffer the spring on the machine, the more effective the cartridge would be. A soft hitting machine seems like it would be more unpredictable with cartridges. Just a guess though. We should do an experiment!
Using cartridges on a coil machine is a tricky proposition. It basically adds more stress to the coils spring setup due to the added tension of the o-ring in the cartridge. As such you have to run the machine at a higher voltage. It also wears out front springs really badly. A soft front spring will break after running the cartridge for a few hours so you have to use stiffer springs on your machine to compensate. As for performance, the cartridges hit harder with a coil machine than a rotary. Other than that they're about the same. Just keep in mind that you have to run a higher voltage to push the cartridge. Usually about 2 more volts. Doesn't effect the throw at all. Give is a little less obviously. But a shader with a cartridge still works like a shader, a liner still works like a liner and so on.
iiKryptic I started using TTech with my coil machines, back when they first got popular, around 2008. I could never get the liners to work very well, but I liked using them for Mags. My setup was a short stroke liner, it was great for mags up to 15. My softer shading machines just couldn’t push a cart.
Hey There, I was wondering if you can use T-tech in the Cheyenne Pen. I had trouble finding any info about it. And when I called T-tech they said they haven't tested it but they heard it works. Do you ever use T-tech in the cheyenne pen?
Hey. I’ve experienced.. using rotary gun, and half way through tattooing, the cartridge needles gets spit out of its placing, and wen I tighten it more , it loosens itself up again and repeat. What am I doing wrong?

Hey, great video, I know this is off topic but no one can help me with this - I know you already made an episode about client positioning but I need some help... I don't know how to position the client when tattooing his lower back of the arm... when I lay him down, the area is too stiff and just unmanageable and not good for stretching - usually I put the client in a tattoo chair and put their arm on a support stand in 90 degree angle (L shape) and it's the best position, but sometimes the design is upside-down that way, and even tho I'm up for a challenge I'd rather not tattoo someone's portrait upside down... Do you know what I mean? The lower sleeve or the arm... only way I can imagine the way it's done is if the client is laying flat on their back and their arm is bended backwards behind the head... but that isn't really comfortable is it? How do you tattoo these areas?
as far as the plunger bar that connects to the armature bar...do you autoclave it along with the tube/grip or are they disposable? I am an apprentice and have been taught to slightly bend the needle bar so that the underside of the needle grouping rests against the tip opening, which isn't possible here. does it feel like the needle wiggles around in the cartridge tip at all?
a lot of people slightly bend the needle bar in a traditional setup with coil machines. When using cartridges, this isn't really possible or necessary since the needles connect to a separate plunger at the back of the cartridge. I typically just wipe down the plunger with matacide being careful not to spray it into the motor housing. Thanks for the comment and for watching
+Fireside Tattoo Network I thought that you wouldn't have to worry about cleaning the the machine as much if u use cartridges ,seeing as how the plunger isn't actually subjected to contamination
would be nice to have a video of the ego hawkflow disposible grips . and see how they work with a hawk and other rotarys . thankx for great videos as always
hey jake I have stars down the underside of my arm from elbow to wrist and my daughters name on my for arm could you recommend a way of having a sleeve or how to wrap the sleeve and blend together aswell
Are those pens safe .. Seems like yall had another video on the pen how to wrap and clean and what not .. That push rod seems really close to the cartridge and you cant auto clave that shit .. I see alot of know it all fucks criticizing it but they never really give actual facts .. Just wonder what yall thoughts on that are over there at fire side
I have a machine similar to that but the cartridge gets stuck and wont move. But i give it a little nudge one tha top part of the machine and itll start....what can be the problem?
my name is annika, and i am an aprentice, I really would like to know which direction do you go for line work, how deep ect, my mentor wont explain these can you?
Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to offer technical advice remotely. That is why a good apprenticeship is so valuable. The best advice I can give is to learn to read the skin. If you aren't getting good saturation or consistent lines with one technique, then try another. Increase/decrease the needle depth/direction/voltage/etc until something starts to work. Wish I could be more help.
You have to take into account that your motor or coils have to fight against the spring or elastic in the cartridge. It turned me off to cartridges. With traditional needles the power of the motor or coils is going straight to the tip of the needles.
Depends. What machine are you using? What grip? And if your truly talking depth into the skin... That's your skill. You can adjust the swing/throw by turning a dial on some grips... Basically moving the plunger on the cart in relation to the plunger bar on the machine. If your machine is adjustable for stroke you can further make adjustments there. If it's a vice grip without dial adjustment... You can simply adjust the position in the vice like you would a standard set up.
I have a stylus H and Im curious if anybody using them has an opinion on the stylus vs the cheyenne pen? I wanna try the stylus type 2 as well. although I feel like the support for stylus is slow & stressed(understandably so ..as a one man show) Im very happy with the machine. The only issue I have is the motor wearing out. I chose stylus over cheyenne because I felt like supporting a tattoo specific manufacturer over a non tattoo industry corporation. ( if that makes any sense) I am a huge fan of the pen style machine as well as the cartridges. I am curious about the cheyenne. does the motor wear the same as say the stylus H? Do all cheyenne machine require the specific power supply they make? thanx Jake.. really enjoy your content! Keep up the good work!
+Jeremy DeCory Thanks. I have no experience with the stylus or Cheyenne pen. I have been using the hawk thunder for several years now and am happy with it. I haven't noticed an issue with motor wear. the thunder feels the same today as when I first bought it. I assume the motor for the cheyenne pen is similar. Hopefully someone who has some experience with these machines will offer some advice. Thanks again!
where can I get legitimate cartridges that are not cheap Chinese knockoffs I'm just starting to get into the cartridge needles and just a typical tube and coil guy but I just ordered some and I want to make sure they're good not garbage
I'm using the Cheyenne pen and the stylus and I feel the Cheyenne it's better it's more powerful and more consistent stylus it's good but I don't feel comfortable working high voltages in a machine that's my only issue overall I like both but I prefer the Cheyenne pen
to everyone wanting to get a rotary i recommend staying with a coil machine till you get the hang of tattooing, just because the machine is more consistent does not mean your tattooing will be to, i mean yes a good machine will give you great tattoos because its a good machine but with coils you get a bog, with that also a way of indicating if you have a proper angle, needle depth and stretch because of the sound, ive seen people go straight to a rotary and never improved because they when never able to get a proper feel for where they need to be, please start basic and start with the old school machine till you can feel in your hands where you need to be in terms of everything i'd mentioned above
in a way your right.. but coils are very high maintenance compared to rotaries n alot of beginners can't afford badass coil machines that are handmade n properly tuned.. ALOT of beginners end up getting these little shitty cheap tattoo kits that come with bullshit machines n no matter what u do u can't really tune these Lil bastards properly without taking them apart n reconstructing them the right way.. but if u think about it rotaries don't need to be tuned and with cartridges ur cutting your set up and breakdown time in half (or more) n it also reduces chances of cross contamination or risk of infection/contraction of disease.. Ive kno a lot of ppl working the business for years n years n they're recommending rotaries to me n I think I'm going to make the switch. honestly I think its best if u learn how to use both so you can expand your horizons n try different things you've never tried before
Its fucked up an apprentice has to ask anyone other then their mentor. The mentor is there to teach you. If you're at the point where you are buying a machine he should be teaching you the craft.
Awesome. Glad to hear that. I would love to pick up one of his machines but they go so fast! Every time I go to his site, they are sold out. I only mention that they didn't work well with cartridges because in the description for one of his machines, he mentions that it isn't meant to run with cartridges. I forget which machine it was though. thanks again.

Usually about 2 more volts. Doesn't effect the throw at all. Give is a little less obviously. But a shader with a cartridge still works like a shader, a liner still works like a liner and so on.

How do you tattoo these areas?
If I understood correctly then the simplest way sometimes is to lay the client on their stomach and have the arm on a rest.
well yes, I'll try that one out thank you!
I agree with Mauricio. That is exactly how I place them for that area

as far as the plunger bar that connects to the armature bar...do you autoclave it along with the tube/grip or are they disposable? a lot of people slightly bend the needle bar in a traditional setup with coil machines.
+Fireside Tattoo Network I work with disposable needles, grips, tips n tubes and was thinking of switching to cartridges
Hi, does this tubes need to sterelize? I'm sorry about my terrible english, thanks in advance!
You can sterilize them. I wrap them in a bag and then clean them with matacide
would be nice to have a video of the ego hawkflow disposible grips . and see how they work with a hawk and other rotarys . thankx for great videos as always
Thanks. I've never tried those grips. I'll take a look at them
Much appreciation for your advise, great channel.
Thanks a lot. We appreciate the support
I appreciate your videos so much.
hey jake I have stars down the underside of my arm from elbow to wrist and my daughters name on my for arm could you recommend a way of having a sleeve or how to wrap the sleeve and blend together aswell
Low quality cartridges.
Thank you for sharing your experience and advise.
Thanks for supporting the channel!
My cartridges just "jump" from the grip when I put them.
Silly question, but how do the cartridges hold the ink? I always thought tattoo needles injected ink, but apparently that isn't how it works
The cartridges don’t actually hold ink in them you’re supposed to dip the needle in the ink
my name is annika, and i am an aprentice, I really would like to know which direction do you go for line work, how deep ect, my mentor wont explain these can you?
Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to offer technical advice remotely. That is why a good apprenticeship is so valuable. The best advice I can give is to learn to read the skin. If you aren't getting good saturation or consistent lines with one technique, then try another. Increase/decrease the needle depth/direction/voltage/etc until something starts to work. Wish I could be more help.
+Fireside Tats. thanks for that much of advice it does help I will continue to watch your videos an study :) thanks again
What exactly IS your "mentor" explaining to you then?
Didn’t answer my question on what’s the difference between bugpin & regular cartridges.... :(
Bugpin refers to the diameter of the needle. They make smaller holes. Great for smooth greywashes but crappy for solid color
Thank you ❤️
You have to take into account that your motor or coils have to fight against the spring or elastic in the cartridge. It turned me off to cartridges. With traditional needles the power of the motor or coils is going straight to the tip of the needles.
wow that's a pretty cool tattoo machine bro...
Thanks.
can anybody tell me how do you control needle depth with this type of machine? I can't figure out. my needle it going too deep :(
have you figured it out yet?
+Jeremy DeCory You can use other power supply as long as its good quality and you have the power adaptor from Cheyenne.
But they get funky on coils? The plunger gets kinda fucky, if you don’t have like thee nicest an most consistent coil.
u can spread the t-techs too.
I think they're actually easier to take apart than the cheyenne ones.
+viniv20 I haven't tried to spread them but thanks for the info
BIGWASP tattoo Needle Cartridges is good yes or nop
Not really
I cant find ep 15 from the teqhniques!!!!???? :(
Episode 15 will be released tomorrow
+Fireside Tats cant wait.
can use cartridges with bishop rotary?
I have never used the Bishop. there are aftermarket tubes that fit most machines and accept cartridges.
Yes.
Do t-tech cartridges have a membrane?
No they don't.
where can I get legitimate cartridges that are not cheap Chinese knockoffs I'm just starting to get into the cartridge needles and just a typical tube and coil guy but I just ordered some and I want to make sure they're good not garbage
welcome to look our needles:

t tech needles are the best from what I heard
you can try our ELITE Needle Cartridge:)

good information.
What size is that grip?
1" but I tend to wrap it in Coban to make it thicker
I'm using the Cheyenne pen and the stylus and I feel the Cheyenne it's better it's more powerful and more consistent stylus it's good but I don't feel comfortable working high voltages in a machine that's my only issue overall I like both but I prefer the Cheyenne pen
+Jaime Parra Thanks
informative. thank you.
Thanks
yeah thankz
GO TIGERS👍
to everyone wanting to get a rotary i recommend staying with a coil machine till you get the hang of tattooing, just because the machine is more consistent does not mean your tattooing will be to, i mean yes a good machine will give you great tattoos because its a good machine but with coils you get a bog, with that also a way of indicating if you have a proper angle, needle depth and stretch because of the sound, ive seen people go straight to a rotary and never improved because they when never able to get a proper feel for where they need to be, please start basic and start with the old school machine till you can feel in your hands where you need to be in terms of everything i'd mentioned above
in a way your right.. but coils are very high maintenance compared to rotaries n alot of beginners can't afford badass coil machines that are handmade n properly tuned..
Hi...Sir i am from indian
😮
aha ;-)
Dan Kubin machines works fine with the cardridges :-) I have 4 machines and they do fine!
