indeed, I was hoping on how to MAKE the stuff, not how to apply the store bought sort. Its expensive, and I don't have the money to blow on buying bags of pre-done flocking.
Nice job Richard! I'm new to all this and I just purchased my WWS applicator and now I see your promo code!!! Never mind, I will use it in the future. Thanks for the great lesson! Cheers Gregg.
thanks for that, I bought an wws applicator and I was a bit disappointed but now you've shown me how it works, happy and a bunny..ps glad I'm not the only messy modeller. lol
Hey nice tutorial. I’m just now researching how to do this. Is there something special about the layering spray? Is a spray glue? Or more like hair spray? I love the effect. Thanks for sharing. David
What is the best sort of "fixative" for this static grass once it is finally where you want it? Could I get away with using 3:1 modpodge and water mixture? Or should I buy a glue specifically for finishing the grass? My end goal is to make a few dioramas with static grass- and I will have action figures sitting and or standing on it. Thanks so much for the help:)
You’ve done a nice job with the layering, it does make it look more realistic- be nice to see your efforts with this on your main layout. Good video - you make it look easy!
Hi Richard Thanks for sharing and well demonstrated, your techniques shows a superb effect, I’ve never used the top spray but as you’ve explained very well I’m certainly very keen to buy WWS products to add more depth to mine.. Once again thanks Garry
hi !!! I have a problem with the electrostatic grass that I can not solve ... the tufts hardly work well with the manual applicator because lint forms on the top of the strainer ..... what am I doing wrong? Has it ever happened to you? Thank you!!
This looks like a good system, I've been looking around at static grass applicators lately. Was this the Pro or the Micro applicator you were using? If it was the larger Pro, would it still be feasible to do smaller sections like lineside tufts of grass and weeds since can vacuum up what doesn't adhere to small areas you glue? Iain
Yeah, I figured that would be the case. I'd love Railmatch paints and Humbrol washes, but can't really find them here and no-one in the UK can/will ship them :/
I know this video is a bit older but having just watched Hattons review of the Gauge master applicator i just wondered if there is much difference is the finish? This applicator is £20 ish cheaper and if the result is basically the same then no point spending out ? Steve

Hi Richard Ive been hanging my nose over one of these applicators for a while as I'm not happy with my home made effort... one should be on its way and discounted thanks to the code so cheers :-) Kathy Millet did a good video on the grass and I think she liked Gaugemaster or Pecos? but this looks good stuff too and using the layering spray gives amazing results. Cheers Paul
The grass look great, really works well, will invest in a new applicator soon. What mess you made, I’m glad you commented cause my OCD would have kicked in
Just as I'm planning to do my own layout's scenics, your tutorials are proving out brilliant! Just one thing, you didn't clarify on whether this method works on other surfaces, such as expanded polystyrene (which is what my layout's built on), plaster of paris etc. If you could clarify whether it would or not, that'd be great!
I already have one of these applicators from WWS but it was very interesting to see how the overlay spray worked will definitely get some now on another note I thought I was messy! I seem to have found a compatriot 😂 excellent video!
Just in time for my 10am teabreak again 😁. Lovely results. Will be saving the details for that. Hopefully you found away out from being buried in heaps of static grass 😂.. now i hate mess so i know doing this stage will require a few stiff drinks to calm me down lol
Good point, it is easy to forget that in OO gauge that 2mm is the equivalent of 6" (so I'm guessing 1' for N?) which would be a bit long for a lawn, but OK for a meadow.
It might have been better to mop up after each layer to save you mixing all of the wastage together? I do that to avoid wasting the inevitable overspill! ;-) I use their layering spray from a bottle with pump action applicator.....as the aerosol goes on to things you don't want it to go on to...track, backscenes, buildings, etc....and remains tacky. I have hence not used the aerosol on my actual layout, but on parts away from the layout.
Hi Dave, The idea of the demo was to show how quick and instantly it could be done using their layering spray system. Plus I'm a terribly messy modeler, you guys would really cringe if you saw my loft in between shoots! :D
WWS do some very good products. I use them a lot. Layering spray good, but I am paranoid about ending up getting my over priced Bachmann locos covered in a misting of spray!! lol
They are good , cheaper these days , the original noch was over £100 , small tip paint base in green first .. you can also just clip the earth clip on to track saves banging a nail in
I always paint my base in brown paint usualy buy a 5litre pot of chocolate brown from homebase add a bit of white and looks quite a good earth colour then any patches that show through just look like earth also a lot cheaper than buying dedicated earth colour paints in much smaller pots
I've having an anxiety attack from watching the way you're just dumping grass everywhere when changing colors....I've never quite seen a mess that massive, made with static grass.

Similar to hair spray although I've been reliably told it is different.

It was the Micro pro lol which is still pretty big.
Haha, okay. Thanks. I'll probably check them out. Decent shipping to the US, too!

I have to say, I use the peco equivalent and have not gone back, it has to be the only one that looks realistic. Are you going over the old areas?
I will be now! :-)

You can't go wrong with WWS gear. Just select the grasses to suit your preference. I normally use Woodland scenics or Green scenes
Love Watching your videos keep them coming am definitely going to get the grass applicator and try it on my layout I am building
Don't forget the discount code. :-)
Awesome video
Thanks Mike!
Very convincing demo. Would you recommend the same 2mm/4mm combo for N scale?
Yes,multiple 2mm colours and 4mm for unkept areas, maby not the 6mm option as it would be a tad large.
Very informative, thank you!
Excellent video! Do you still use the Pro-Grass Micro?
Of course!

Try holding the applicator closer to the grass.

The same method works on any surface, clip the crocodile clip into a screw embedded into the polystyrene in your case! :)

Looks really good for 00 - not sure how this would look on N gauge unfortunately. :-(
Have a look at thier 2mm collection. :-)
I wonder if anyone has tried to wear a static grass beard? 😂
I'll take a look at the N stuff, you have a new sub. Cheers.
6mm grass looks ok in small patches on n gauge as it would be 3ft grass which u do see in unkept areas in the real world

so¿¿ how you make it¿
in reality 2mm is 6" lol if i let my grass get that long my wife would have a fit. However the tractor tracks @10:30 look fantastic.

Came to learn how to "make" static grass...
Stayed to learn how to "apply" it better.
Thanks a lot - I now know where I went wrong - grass applicator too far away
Dude,,, this is how to apply the grass, not "How to make"
how to make static grass:
step 1: purchase static grass
That isn't static 😆
wheres the how to make static grass not how to use it
