I have a 4 feet tall larger Bonsai Boulevard Cypress. Here in Canada, it is labeled as Japanese Cypress. I use a mix of 50 percent perlite and 50 percent Mix 40. The tree is kept indoors all year round, and it doesn't like getting dry. Here is Alberta, where winters can get to minus 40 degrees. This tree can not be kept outdoors. The tree responds very well to indoors conditions when kept with LED grow lights beside a southwest window. I find that the tree does back, bud. Another tip is when working on the foliage, you need to water the foliage and keep it wet for the next few days so that it doesn't turn brown. This tree isn't readily available in Canada. Great videos, and I really like your channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
So Ben, I use 10% fir bark in all my mixes and was unaware of potential hazards...When I looked it up it the article I came across states it is a benefit to your soil...I don't want fungal issues with my substrate...Could you further explain your position...Appreciate any assistance...I can shoot you the article if you would like...Really enjoyed this video and I'm going to have to track down a Tsukumo Cypress...Amazing potential in these trees...Thanks for sharing...
It's a benefit to your soil when used as top dressing in large garden beds and ground cover. I use them for that purpose as well. But reacts differently in a small environment like a bonsai pot. There's also scientific articles I've read that it also affects nitrogen. I may do a completely separately video since i only glazed over the topic on this one. Thanks for the courteous question. Vs saying you're Wrong Ben =) I appreciate your politeness. It's missing in many parts of the world right now.
@@BenBSeattle Absolutely...You are far more experienced than I am...I'm trying to pick up information so I have the best chance of maturing my pre-pre-Bonsai...Only been at this for a year or so...Love you channel and all you do for the hobby and enthusiasts like myself...
I've not seen the tsukumo variety here in England.I have a 'BOULEVARD' that I have been developing for about 10 years. Its about 2 feet high grown from garden centre stock. The foliage is very soft and the tree has an upright growth habit with very soft blue foliage. Also also ive heard they do not back bud very much. I'd be interested to hear how yours reacts to pruning.
Sir Ben. Have You or anyone thought of a Quarantine Nursery to Bring Back Awesome Field Grown JBP,JWP, JRP and Japanese Maple Trees? This Would Help so much the Japanese Farmers and People. I would be willing buy and Pay for the Care. Sir Ben would this Help more People get into the Bonsai Field? Sir Ben would UV Lights help killing the Parasites and Any Insects for Japan ? Thanks and Special thanks for your Teaching
I have had many discussions about field growing more bonsai material. There are folks who are already doing so. But there's definitely more of a need. I hope to procure some acreage one day to do so. But would need some more investment capital to do so.

Chamaecyparis pisifera - Same species but different cultivar and has much larger growth habit and tends to grow more upright
Your comment looks great! Just a small tweak for clarity:
