    Amish live back closer to the 1820s. Watch the movie "Witness" which is not only an excellent movie (Harrison Ford is a Philly cop), but also provides a very nice depiction of Amish life in the process. Really good film--was filmed in and around Lancaster, PA (pronounced there as Lankister--emphasis on the Lank) when I lived in Harrisburg, PA, just up the road.

      I can never think of that move (which is beautifully filmed, btw) without remembering my sister taking our son on a train trip from Harrisburg to Philadelphia to visit friends. This was the year the movie came out. He was about 8 or 9 at the time and she would NOT allow him to go to the bathroom at the station in Philadelphia. Poor kid. :)

    The Amish "break" you're talking about is called Rumspringa. And it's considered a rite of passage that allows young people to make an informed decision on whether or not to remain in the lifestyle. It's not frowned upon that I know of.

    • @threellamas16
      @threellamas16 Місяць тому +4

      Yes, and the surprising fact about it is the majority of young people choose to stay in the lifestyle.

    • @cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449
      @cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449 Місяць тому +1

      There are a few ultra-conservative sects (think Schwartzentruber) that frown on the practice of Rumspringa, but most sects embrace the idea that young people have the right to understand what they're choosing.

    Lovely video. Small towns here in south-central Pennsylvania are nothing to sneeze at, and I'm surprised at least one of them didn't make this list. There are many wonderful small towns to be found in this area of the state. I LOVE having the Amish for neighbors. Here in south-central Pennsylvania, we also enjoy the fullness & richness of the changing of the seasons. When it gets too hot, you know a cool down is right around the corner, and vice-versa. Spring & Autumn here are spectacular. Small town life in Pennsylvania is GREAT....!! 😃

      Ya'll ain't got nothiin' on Northcentral Pennsylvania. One of the prettiest small towns you'll ever visit (and I can almost guarantee you've seen photos of it) is Muncy, PA, not far from the largest town in Northcentral PA, Williamsport (home of Little League Baseball, and onetime lumber capital of the world. At one time, Williamsport had the highest number of millionaires per capita, in the world, too.) And we've got history and nature and culture and artists and artisans and craftsmen. So we can agree that life in small town PA is great. :)

    Hey Guys! I am from oklahoma (relocated to connecticut) so I have actually been to about 4 of these towns on the list. My take is; these new england small towns are gorgeous and you will find alot of hospitality there. On the other hand, places like Davis, OK. are a little different. The experience is much more "homegrown" and the folk out there genuinely care about being hospitable. If a simple life, good friends, and true southern hospitality is the life for you, then I would say he nailed the #1 on this list.

    Fayetteville Arkansas in the foothills of the Ozark Mounntains. College town, around 93,000 residents, and over 30,000 plus student population. University of Arkansas flagship school main campus. Razorback stadium, Bud Walton Arena, Baum stadium baseball stadium, JB Hunt Transportation world headquarters, Tyson Foods world headquarters, Walmart world headquarters, plenty of restaurants and bars, culture, lakes, rivers, water sports, hiking trails, etc. Clearly I can go on and on about this place. Did I say it's beautiful too?

      I just moved to Fayetteville from Ohio in January. We absolutely love Fayetteville and the entire Northwest Arkansas (NWA) area. It's awesome walking out of my house and seeing mountains in the distance in every direction. I'm from a much smaller towns, so Fayetteville is actually much bigger than what I'm used to, but it still has that kind of small town feel...except the traffic lol. And then if you drive just a few minutes outside of town it complete country. My girlfriend and I are constantly talking about how beautiful the view is when we're driving around.

      I’m from Benton (I find myself say,”no, not Bentonville” all the time to people from out of state. I also love Fayetteville and the whole NWA area. I’m just hoping the recent explosion of growth up there doesn’t change the flavor of the place too much. It’s such an awesome classic college town, and in a beautiful natural setting, to boot.
      Two others in AR I’d recommend that are smaller one in my area, one in yours: Hot Springs, only 30 minutes from me. About 40,000, so a small city. And Eureka Springs, near you. It was always a big favorite of my family, and is still my favorite place for a relatively close trip. It’s so quirky and interesting, w/a lot of history. And of course the Crescent Hotel attracts a lot of ghost hunters. Even if you don’t actually believe in that, its interesting history, and they even do a campfire ghost story time. Not to mention its just a beautiful old building, always w/one or two resident cats (the “managers”).

    So 8 of these towns he’s mentioning will have “rough” winters, with cold temperatures & snow which is why he says they are great vacation destinations. #1, #4 & #5 are all in New England, so lots of snow. Marietta being on the river will be truly cold as I grew up in a town down river & yes, very cold. It’s been hit by ice storms the last few years. However, Marietta is quiet lovely, but it’s in the Appalachian Mountains & the region tends to be poor. There are some people up in the mountains who still use outhouses. Hawaii, while beautiful with tropical weather, is expensive to live there…cousin used to live there when he worked for the government. The South has alligators & Natchioches has an alligator park. And though this town is inland a bit, it’s still close enough to the coast that you could still be affected by hurricanes. Weather will be very hot & humid in the summer which is why there’s air conditioning…winters are relatively mild compared to the northern part of the country, but they still can have crappy weather as well at times. Most will tell you not to move to Oklahoma...it tends to be a poor state which is why he tells you it's affordable. When he put it at #1, I laughed & wondered who was paying him to say that. Edit: weather is very hot in the summer (32+C) & mild winters (average temp 8C)

    The Amish are not inbred, but do suffer from what is known as "Founder's Disease". This is where the gene pool gets locked up and unable to express variety. Thus, lots of Amish are blonde haired or share similar facial characteristics.
    You can see this better with Africans, as each tribe has obvious differences from other tribes.
    Amish do abstain from most modern conveniences, but also use them in limited capacity to conduct business. So, it's now common to find Amish internet websites and stores that take cash and card. If they use a motor vehicle, it is often owned by the entire community or they have a good associate who offers them rides into town.

Cities and places off the beaten path. For that matter, you might find a smallish town you like in one of his videos. Try recent ones in Huntsville and Fairhope Alabama. But many, many more, and they all involve talking with local people - not tourism type videos. Remote native communities to big cities.

Both live near the same town and both are friends. You truly get an idea of what it is like running a Family Farm in Oklahoma, by watching their videos. The Amish grow their own food, make their own furniture and clothes and build their own homes. They MUST wear clothes they're told to wear, the way to wear them, and the way they're to be made. There's very strict rules on dating and marriage. They pretty much have to have permission for a lot of things like that If they leave the Amish life they are shunned by other Amish, including their own family.

    • @cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449
      @cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449 Місяць тому

      If a young person chooses to leave after Rumspringa, before they are baptised, they are not shunned at all. They are welcomed to visit and often the non-Amish grandkids spend summers with their grandparents or aunts and uncles. It's only those who've been baptised and then decide to leave, who are shunned, and the degree to which that shunning is enforced depends on the church district, which vary widely in their strictness.

    They had lots of businesses in the area and their stuff was always top notch.
    The ones here use modern devices to some extent. They run a couple bakeries and grocery stores in the area-- excellent baked good, btw-- and they have to have modern equipment to keep up to code and everything.
    But their own homes are more traditional. And they have a tiny one-room school with hitching posts outside, and they don't use motor vehicles or tractors (but will hire people to drive them if needed).
    And they rock the whole look with the hats and the bonnets and the beards and all that.

    I didn’t expect Oklahoma to be on there. I live in a small town in Oklahoma. I’m pretty sure my grandpa was born in Davis. He served in WWII and settled in Tulsa. He was married over 50 years and had a daughter and adopted my dad when their daughter was like 18-19 years old. He passed away from cancer when I was 12 he was in his 70s and then my grandma died 9 months later. I don’t think I’ve been to Davis. If you come to Oklahoma, Tulsa and Oklahoma City have the most stuff going on that you can do. I live a short commute from Tulsa. I’m a small town girl and don’t like the trafffic and crazy highways and what not in Tulsa so I avoid going there and stick to the smaller towns around me that are closer. I like Owasso. The Amish do not practice incest. They're very strict type Christian faith. There are a few hundred in one town but there are thousands of them throughout in different nearby towns and Mennonites. Outside people will sometimes join the communities so there are enough blood lines that there is not an issue with inbreeding either.

    Don’t worry daz small towns usually have multiple bars. I’m from a crazy small town with population of 1000 and there are at least 3 bars. I don’t go to bars so idk but that’s the ones I’ve seen. Several places to buy alcohol.

    Oklahoma is “kinda” southern the accent is more Midwest or your typical American accent but some still have southern accents. It wasn’t a state till nearly 50 years after the civil war so it never picked a side and was smack dab right In between Texas a southern state and Kansas a northern state.

    Honestly, if I were to move from anywhere in Europe to the US after being Empty Nesters, I'd move to Sedona, Arizona. Just checked, and the population as of 2021 was just under 9800. But it is nestled in a gorgeous red rock desert canyon that is just beautiful during certain times a day as the sun hit the red rock buttes surrounding the town. Sedona is where the 2008 GOP candidate for President, Senator John McCain was from. I was out there in 1993, and it was awesome. Didn't have a whole lotta time to hang around there, as we had to catch a Red Eye plane flight back home from Vegas to St. Louis that night, but it's one town I would definitely consider moving to if I had the ability.

    Wolfboro New Hampshire DOESN'T get packed with people ever, lol. It's a legit a great small town. Just because the US has a lot of people doesnt mean they will pack every single small town across the entire country for vacations. Most people cant afford vacations

    Natchitoches, Louisiana is a very beautiful small town, especially at Christmas time. I lived there for several years back in the early 2000s and I never witnessed a single crime. Of course, I lived in the beautiful historic district where things were mostly calm and serene. It's like most other small towns in America. Crime is usually confined to certain areas. Avoid those areas and you will be fine. The architecture alone is worth visiting there. It's very much like stepping back in time.
