Actor Doug Bradley (Pinhead) had no prior film experience before this. He was college/theater friends with Clive Barker. Doug held the Pinhead for 8 consecutive Hellraiser movies.
Clive Barker *hates* the name Pinhead, which is the name the movie gave to the Hell Priest. In the second book, a character mocked the Priest, by calling him Pinhead. That character then brutally killed 😂
26:28 When Pinhead said "We want the man who did this" Kristy refused. It is possible that the cenobites now considered the deal broken. At least that is a possible explanation.
Everyone complains about how you can see the wheels of the stroller pushing the creature down the hallway, but people forget that in the book that creature (called the Engineer) has its body melted and attached by the nerves to a wheeled machine. There's a part of the book that is not shown in the movie that describes the tortures Frank goes through in the hands of the Cenobites and it tells how Frank hears the wheels of the creature coming down the hallway with a new torture device everyday. I don't know if they intended to show that in the movie or it's a production mistake, but ironically it ends up being more accurate to the book, cos the creature actually has wheels.
Actually the creature (engineer) in the book is quite different from the movie, I'm just finishing reading the book and the engineer was described as a humanoid sitting on a throne of decaying heads.
You've both got it wrong! 🤣 The one sitting on the skulls is from the first group of cenobites. The engineer appears near the end of the book and is like a person with light for a head or something (it's kind of unclear).
I've been waiting for this one! One of the best horror movies of all time IMO, between the practical effects and the Cenobite designs it's just iconic! The series as a whole kind of sucks but the first two films are fantastic.
This film was, and remains, a brilliant piece of work. Given the obstacles and odds of even getting the film made with limited support this turned out to be one of my all-time favorite horrors ever released.
You can thank composer Christopher Young for why the music is so good. It has this kind of bombastic yet has this romantic gothic horror vibe here. Sometimes I listen to orchestral horror music to help me sleep. Its amazing!
The way I described it to my friend was “Oh good god it sounds like we’re going to Hell. Or at the very least, this is gonna be some kind of religious experience.”
Saw this for the first time when I was 14 years old back in 1989. Been one of my favourite horror movies ever since. For me Julia is the real star of the movie. I really liked the scene where she stands in front of the bathroom mirror and looks directly into the camera while washing off the blood. Very disturbing imagery throughout the entire movie.
Clive Barker just got the right back in December 2021 , by court order , after Helraiser 3 , rest were not originally even Hellraiser movies , studio just took some script they had , put pinhead in it and called it Hellraiser to keep the rights ... shitty move , but film studios did it all the time .
Ah the classic “we gotta make a movie to retain rights” move so they pull a random script that they can morph into a sequel 😂 I heard there were 2 new Hellraisers in development (a movie and a series)
@@BRIDGECO1 The Cenobites are basically Priests of HELL... They're also known as Guardians of the Puzzle boxes. The Lament Configuration (the box) is one of 150 different intricately designed puzzle boxes known as Pandorices. Each box has a specific Guardian attached to it, and each one opens up a gate to HELL. I sent you a link
As far as the last 20 seconds... the "guardian" of the puzzle box is now trying to find another sucker/victim - someone else like Frank Cotton. The subtitle for the film, as per the woman who played Julia, was "Who’s a girl gotta kill to get laid?" The combination of sex and horror was well-mixed, to my thought. It made things very disturbing - which was the point of the exercise. I think you will thoroughly enjoy HELLRAISER 2: HELLBOUND.
Lol, id always heard it was "what a woman would do for a good fuck" or something along those lines, lol. They were trying to come up for titles to the movie and a woman shouted that gem, lol. Love it
The job of the thing disguised as the hobo is to protect the puzzle boxes so they can keep offering them to people. The box senses people with dark desires and drags them to the Cenobites hell that tests the limits between pain and pleasure and some taken there become Cenobites themselves.
The hobo-dragon-man thing is called Eremite. Eremites are the guardians of the puzzle box. They are also Leviathan's emisarries, luring hapless souls to hell.
One of my all time favorites!!! Saw this in the theater when I was in high school...yes i am old. And for the time it was awesome to see this kind of violence and gore with people in a theater. People were shocked
Hellraiser is one of the most disturbing movies of all time on so many levels. The concept and theme was just so dark, twisted, evil, sick, brutal, explicit, graphic, violent, bloody, gory, and sadistic as you will cringe or squirm as it will make your skin crawl 😰😱 which works perfectly for the movie. It also identifies and analyzes the boundaries between pleasure and pain. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍😎💯👍
Thanks guys. I was 10 when I watched this. I remember feeling really dirty afterwards. 😔 My dad and I always rented scary movies, even faces of death. Oh, the monkey scene.

Part 2 is better imo. Part 3 is entertaining but the rest are pretty bad. Check out Lord of Illusions and Nightbreed, Clive Barker’s other two written/directed films.👍🔥🔥🔥
The part where Frank comes out of the closet with the knife and skins the rat just to slowly back away made my buddy Neil say, and I quote: "Dafuq kinda prison threat bullshit was that?!"
i forgot the wedding dress scene in this film.... i hope that was after the wedding because i doubt there was a way to schedule a last minute dry cleaning appointment if that was the day of the wedding.
The special effects when the cenobites were banished looked kinda corny but how they were achieved is kinda cool. I believe Clive Barker hand drew them himself.

This video got me laughing . Though i do think it is a very disturbing movie for someone that sees it for the first time.
I have that face pinhead put back together at the beginning tattooed on me along with the box and chains etc lol 😆 love hellraiser and the cenobites 🖤🤘
Definitely top 5 horror franchises of all time hands down. I would definitely watch at least the first 3, if not the first 6. Oh what the hell am I saying watch them all. I wouldn't recommend what I did where I watched all of them in one sitting. Talk about feeling disturbed afterwards. Can't wait for the new one or reboot whatever it is but either way can't wait.

The special effects that were weird were done by clive barker and a friend by hand because they were low on funds, considering that they're pretty outstanding lol.

Actor Doug Bradley (Pinhead) had no prior film experience before this. He was college/theater friends with Clive Barker. Doug held the Pinhead for 8 consecutive Hellraiser movies.
Not only did he make pin head iconic but he made it impossible for others to play the character without being in his shadow.

Doug Bradley applied for the film Hellraiser as one of the mattress movers.

12:18 - The weird cricket man is a cameo by Clive Barker, the author of the novel The Hellbound Heart as well as director of the film.
The homeless man is a puzzle guardian, there are several puzzles and each one has a guardian.
My fav Clive Barker adaptation next to this is Midnight Meat Train. It's exactly what it sounds like; tons of gore, Raimi-feel, good times.
