Quick correction (Misreading on my part! My bad! -Chelsea): Freaks was not Tod Browning's last studio film. That would be Miracles For Sale, in 1939. However, after Freaks, Browning had tons of trouble getting his projects greenlit and was instead relegated to either horror pictures or projects with similarly disgraced actors.
Freaks is probably the least exploitative Exploitation film of all time. It treats the “freaks” as normal people with real emotions and relationships. It’s very fitting that two of the most “beautiful” people in the film are the villains. The scene where Hans finally comes to terms with the fact that Cleopatra is only using him for his money is genuinely heartbreaking.
The problem with the child drowning scene in Frankenstein is that when you see it now, the scene after the drowning, Frankenstein sits by the water and weeps. The next shot you always see is the father carries the daughter’s dead body. I know when you see it now, you get the idea and understand when he throws the little girl in the water the reason for it. You get his innocence. The sad thing is is weeping would have made that scene so brilliant.
While Seduction of the Innocent did lead to the Comics Code (self-censorship among comic publishers) because of the fears about delinquency, one of the major aspects of the book was that it interpreted super-heroes having secret identities as a metaphor for closeted homosexual men. He saw Batman and Robin having one identity during the day as upstanding citizens while hiding their other identities who have other values/morals. The led to the original creation of Batwoman and Batgirl as heterosexual love interests for Batman and Robin. The most ironic part is that a later recreation of Batwoman's character had her come out as a lesbian.

crazy watching this now talking 7:36 about horror surging in times of crisis considering the 2020s has been the best decade in horror already and it's just after the pandemic.
I have the opinion that most people that have a problem with horror movies, violent video games, explicit music etc. are those that failed at their job as parents and influencers. Those that couldn't take the time and effort to teach the differences between entertainment and reality end up with ignorant children and need something to blame other than themselves. I grew up with the freedom to watch and listen to what I wanted because I was raised right, simple as it is.
People today aren’t more sensitive as we were back then, BUT today we just have a way to share the stuff we are upset about and other people find it and agree with it even if it doesn’t make sense
Fantastic podcast! One of my favorites. Really interesting and the amount of time Chelsea must have spent in this is mind blowing, thanks Chelsea for doing so much work for these podcasts and making them so interesting and informative. I have a really funny story about The Exorcist: My mom and her many siblings grew up in a very catholic home, and she and her siblings had watched the Exorcist when they were very little. Not long after watching it, while my mom was sleeping in the same room as her sister, her sister starts to have a seizure. And my mom was terrified and thought she was possessed (because the movie was so terrifying for her). In the end everything was fine, her mom came in and calmed everything down. In addition, her brother who was terrified of the film the most is now an actual priest.
I know they're crazy busy with all the other aspects of the channel and life stuff going on, but I truly miss the podcast deep dives. They're my absolute favorite episodes and I wish they could do more.
I love me a good kill count episode but it's the academic discussions about the horror genre that made me a fan of yall. great episode. much love from Oakland

Former Catholic here, just noting that venial sins are like small lies, being rude to someone, stealing your siblings chocolate bar at the candy shop, being lazy, etc. While those sins are considered minor, not like murder and stuff (Those are called mortal sins), the backlash you'd get from your society for committing sins frequently would usually be enough to make life hell for you regardless.
Paulie from The Sopranos: "You add up all your mortal sins and multiply that number by 50. Then you add up all your venial sins and multiply that by 25. You add that together and that's your sentence to Purgatory. I figure I'm gonna have to do 6,000 years before I get accepted into Heaven and 6,000 years is nothin' in Eternity terms. I can do that standing on my head. It's like a couple of days here."
It’s interesting you mentioned the tabloid backlash against Child’s Play 3, because I remember being terrified of watching the Chucky movies when I was a kid specifically because I was told they inspired the Bulger case. This would have been around 1996 or so.
It's not just films in the UK but also television especially Mary Whitehouse who had it in for lots of TV. She went after Doctor Who especially. I found the documentary of The Exorcist on the VHS scarier than the actual flm.
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LONG
So glad James brought up that people "aren't more sensitive" nowadays - we've always had our Karens and cancel cultures - it's just that what society values, and inversly, abhors, changes! duh, the true horror is how much people miss this...
Love yoy videos guys! Was crazy when i saw the exorcist for the first time, and my when i got home, my mom was like "oh, the priest that its based on was a family friend"
There was another case in England linked to Child’s play in which a girl was tortured. This happened at a similar time to the James Bulger case so is often overshadowed
You know what's funny? I always tought that Chelsea and James would be great horror characters as this kind of nice, puritan neighbors but with a sadistic, murderous side. Like, you could picture them as an American Gothic smiling couple with blood splattered over their faces. James reading at 38:15 just confirms my fan casting xD. I think it could work separately or as a couple. What do you think?
Hmmm. By the time April arrives, do some Kill Counts on the 2 Hellboy movies by Guillermo Del Toro. I know some people say that there not horror, but I disagree because the 2 Hellboy movies have Horror Elements, and it'll be a great way to do it because of the New Hellboy movie coming out.
Usually is bashed by the critics, but I grew with it as a kid and made me laugh a lot. I was afraid that it changed my opinion when I grew up, but it was even funnier because I got all the dirty jokes, hahaha. Bonus side, I'm mexican and is the kind of thing that grew funny with my country dub.
James, I was watching some previous kill counts and I decided to watch the scream ones. But the only ones I was able to watch were the first and the fourth. UA-cam said it was blocked in my country. Now I'm sad
Oh wauw, Chelsea is so beautiful. I'm really starting to enjoy this channel overall though, didn't even realize there were podcasts! Just been binge-watching the kill counts so far.
After the Video Recordings Act, the British did actually legit treat video nasties like drugs. Police raided people's houses and their whole video collections, people could get arrested for smuggling video nasties into the country, there was a whole underground of people copying and trading videos they were committing a crime just for owning. At least a few people did go to jail. The video nasties hysteria is something that I find really fascinating. There's a super cool two-part documentary on it on Shudder.

Paulie from The Sopranos:
"You add up all your mortal sins and multiply that number by 50.
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
LONG
Funnily enough, so did I, especially when they talk about what happened on set that made people fear it was cursed.
I may or may not have happy danced when I saw the title of this podcast. SO COOL AND INTERESTING!!!
Reeee 2 mil congrats dude
So glad James brought up that people "aren't more sensitive" nowadays - we've always had our Karens and cancel cultures - it's just that what society values, and inversly, abhors, changes! duh, the true horror is how much people miss this...
I always come back to this podcast, one of my faves ❤️
Bringing high quality content like always, you're the best.
2 million subscribers!!! I’m so happy for you
Best podcast thus far. Great work on the research.
Congrats on 2 million subscribers James! Man I remember when this channel was at 40k subs :')
Love yoy videos guys!
Was crazy when i saw the exorcist for the first time, and my when i got home, my mom was like "oh, the priest that its based on was a family friend"
congrats on 2 mil man been here since the start
There was another case in England linked to Child’s play in which a girl was tortured. This happened at a similar time to the James Bulger case so is often overshadowed
You’re at 2 mill! Been watching you since the IT miniseries and it’s been crazy how quick it’s gone
CONGRATS ON 2 MILLION SUBS AAAAAAAAAA
Just want to say congrats on hitting 2 million subs!!
The Legion of Decency sounds like the dopest supervillain group.
Congrats on 2 mill my dude
Hmmm. By the time April arrives, do some Kill Counts on the 2 Hellboy movies by Guillermo Del Toro. I know some people say that there not horror, but I disagree because the 2 Hellboy movies have Horror Elements, and it'll be a great way to do it because of the New Hellboy movie coming out.
if hes gonna do Del Toro it will be pans labyrinth
Holy moly you're almost at 2 mill! I started watching around 200k subs man, congrats you both deserve everything you get 🦓
18:36 like BC the Province in Canada?
After you guys watch Dracula you guys really should go watch Dracula Dead And Loving It
Usually is bashed by the critics, but I grew with it as a kid and made me laugh a lot. I was afraid that it changed my opinion when I grew up, but it was even funnier because I got all the dirty jokes, hahaha. Bonus side, I'm mexican and is the kind of thing that grew funny with my country dub.
Congratulations on 2 million!
