It's interesting how Armstrong's patter in these early episodes was so blunt. "You've wasted one of your chances." and "You clearly just don't have that pointless ... knowledge".
I agree 100% with what you say, but one thing i have learn't as long time 'Pointless' watcher is it has been Xander and Richard's patter between themselv's has also softened, as we have learned they are near neighbor's and their family's often have dinners together.
Yeah & while there was some comedy play overall it was a lot more serious

This was a terrific show for an Australian.
My very first memory of a women’s singles winner was Evonne Goolagong, and then listening to the 1980 final on the radio.
I am also assuming that most Poms couldn’t name Nicole Kidman’s first film, whereas, even though I have never seen it, a lot of Australians of a certain age can. That’s what I would have gone for, and hope it was pointless.
I am happy for the boys, as they added so much to the jackpot.
