A fun and useful time signature musical ear test for musicians and drummers. A great way to test your ability to identify odd and unusual time signatures such as 3/4, 6/8, 5/4, 7/4 and 9/8. Put your sense of rhythm and music theory to the test and see how you score and whether you have a good musical ear.

I got them all correct and I knew what it was almost instantly, 11 years in percussionist class definitely paid off!
sorry no professional drummer would count Hey Ya as 11/2. It's just a simple 4/4 with a shortened half bar in 2/4. And with an uncommon length of 6 bars per passage. Also you wouldn't count an additive odd structure until it repeats, it's a lot more comfortable to subdivide it in its logical rhythmic parts and use smaller numbers.
Completely agree! It makes perfect sense as a phrase length, but given the little 2/4 bump happens at what I'd perceive as in the middle of the chord cycle, I'd view it (or write it) as 3 bars of 4/4, 1 bar of 2/4, then 2 bars of 4/4.
The implication for 11/2 - in my mind - is that I'd feel the last 3 in a similar way to 7/8 or 11/8: slightly short of the full bar-phrase. I'd definitely never assume 1 extra minum in the middle of a 10-beat phrase hahaha. (I've done enough classical perc to know it doesn't always group that way, but I'd call that a perfect example of the practical limitations of notation!)
18/18 wooooo - like this idea, but I watched the video on 1.5x speed! So I think you could definitely make the beats a little harder for the more advanced level I think. (Especially judging by how many of us got 18/18 haha :D)
I imagine most viewers wanting to take this test would either benefit from finding the point at which things start getting tough for them, and I'd imagine most have a few years of experience/uni/college/etc if we're watching this more casually - so masking the turns a bit more (EG some bars of Lingus by Snarky Puppy where fills carry over) or choosing closer-together time signatures (EG 6/8, 3/4, and 12/8, or 15/16, 17/16, and a faster tempo 4/4) might be cool for a next version, if you make one. :)
Either way, thanks for the fun vid!
Wow!! I scored a "got potential" and I don't even know the first thing about drums...I'm about to though😊
18/18 yeah🤘🔥
Top stuff!
That was fun! I'm in the "Got Potential" category. The funny thing is though, I didn't pause or replay any segments, only allowed myself the alloted number of measures to figure it out. If I had just a bit more time, I could have gotten em all. But I guess that's part of the test too.
Well done for taking on the challenge as intended! 💪
6-6-2, so 14 in total, although to be honest, wasn't 100% sure about the two I got right in the last section! Only been playing 2 years, with no formal lessons, so that's my excuse ;-)
Great job being on a perfect score going into the last round! Keep practicing your time signatures and try again in a few months
Got potential yeah🤘🏼
Well done!
I got 18!
It was pretty easy because if was separated into groups, and it was within three options.
But if I was played a random selection of those beats and was asked what the time signature was, it would be hard.
specially 11/2. But since it didn't sound like the other two I was able to figure it out.
If I was played an 11/2 beat, I would blurt out 4/4! before the phrase even ended. hahahaha
Congrats! I think I’m going to make another more difficult one in the future that’s not limited to three options so keep and eye out 👀
I managed to get them all correct but a couple of the last set definitely gave me a bit of trouble.
I feel like they all had nice solid pulses to feel the signature to, and no wacky hybrid times or things like 13/16
Great job, well done!
I got a 12, I really struggled with 14/8 and 10/4, same with 5/4 and 9/8
Well done! It’s not easy but practice makes perfect, you’ll be getting perfect scores in no time
I've got 13, so I'm in the ''I've got potential'' category. Thanks for the test, it was really cool. I'll keep working on it.
Glad you found it useful, keep working on it! I’ll probably make some more tests in the future
@@drumlessbackingtracks So good man, thanks for all the backing tracks too. It's always very fun to jam on it.
18/18… …I don’t listen to odd time signatures often (I mainly listen to EDM), I’m just a musician who knows music theory. 😂
... for musicians AND Drummers... 🤣🤣🤣
🤣 I had to get both those keywords in the title!
@@drumlessbackingtracksYou should’ve just put one of the words in the description or something, so that you wouldn’t look like a dumba**. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 (No offense.)
I got 16; I got questions 16 and 17 wrong
Good job, you were close to a perfect score!
@@drumlessbackingtracks thank you!!
Yea,At least most punk rock is fun and listenable. And most progressive rock is boring and unlistenable
Yeh I would definitely prefer to listen to Punk sometimes
Way to ding punk drummers. We have feelings too. But if you needed to take that jab to feel better about yourself, I'm happy for you.
What punk drummer did you write this for? Tell him he's adorable. One of these days he'll qualify for that 7-11 job!
I like punk too, but you gotta admit that it’s not known for its odd and unusual time signatures! 🤣
I mean don't take it personally since it's not really unfounded, I've met 4 different punk rock drummers and whenever I invite them to play songs that changes time signatures they struggle to adjust to the changes, same goes for a lot of rock drummers I've met since they've mostly been playing in 4/4
