Why is tech in cars more expensive? | Talking Cars | Malayalam Review

- Nowadays, cars that are packed with technology seem to be quite pricey. LED lights, Touch screen, navigation, alloy wheels, hybrid tech - they all cost a lot of money and people are paying nearly double for top end models now a days. But do they have to be really this expensive? A scooter like the OLA or Ather has these tech and they have a company to run and yet the product costs only a fraction of the cost. So why do we pay so much for our cars then?

As a commerce student, I will tell you my thoughts on these…
1. There will be three models for cars- lowest, middle and top models. Lowest models, as you said are only there to attract people to the showrooms. These models generate the lowest profits and therefore, the manufacturers are not even interested in selling them. The top models are there just to make people feel like the middle level models are worth their money. They will claim a whopping sum for addition of very less features, thereby luring customers into thinking that the middle level models are value for money. This will lead to more people buying the middle level models and which means that the company can use economies of scale to reduce cost of production for per unit produced of the product.
Middle level cars are the cash cows and are pushed heavily. The revenue loss they incur from selling low model cars is realised on the sale of top model cars, hence the price difference.
2. Most of the feature differences are just there to differentiate between the top and middle level buyers. Maybe 2 inches more of screen or a specific colour may not mean so much to a rational consumer, but for a person focused on buying the best car out there, it is still a compromise to make. If someone is willing to pay for the highest version of the car, he will have to be provided with some additional features for the money. For a person who buys a car because it has internet inside, 2 inches is too much to let go of.
3. Companies now use superior analytical systems to understand what the customers want. Anything we see on the car is there because the customers wanted it. Screens are taking over because they are cheap to make and also because customers perceive them as a superior feature. It makes them feel like they are buying a better car for some reason. I personally know people who bought the new baleno because of the heads up display alone.
I am waiting for the day when these screens lag and make the car unusable. Annu ellaarodum parayanam “Njaan Pande ith paranjathallenn”. 😂

That’s a detailed comment. It helps to unlock the basic questions posed. Thank you

That 'Mirror' idea of Vivekji in the end credits is actually good😁. I can totally relate to that feeling, I use to slow down while passing by buildings with Glass facades just to have a look at my car🤭😁😁

We need more Vivekji's wild ideas!!😂🔥
Excellent analysis. Comment posted by Anand A makes this post complete. Perhaps, this is the first time such a common sense analytical post is published about ‘available options’ in cars by any automotive channel in India. I have not read any as well, so far. Your post shines meaningful light on this option shopping madness/marketing that has gripped Indian customers. This is why our channel is unique. Keep them coming. 👍🏿

You guys nailed it this time.. Someone need to address this weird stuff in the auto industry 👍👏👏👏
Thank u JD and Vivek ji,
And I am very happy for that. "WE ARE HERE FOR THE OTHER ANGLE TO LOOK AT".
So.. ആ കുറവുകൾ അറിയാനും, genuine reviews നും, different point of view ഇൽ കര്യങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും, ശെരിക്കും customer ന് importance കൊടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് മാർക്കറ്റിങ്ങിലെ സത്യാവസ്ഥ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും, വണ്ടിയുടെ ഓരോ aspect ലെയും(engineering, r&d, features, pricepoints, actual cost etc) ശെരിക്കുള്ള value മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും, പല കാര്യത്തിലും ഒരു reality check നടത്താനും(especially, is it really worth it എന്ന aspect ഇൽ) ഒക്കെ ആയിട്ട് ആണ് ഞങ്ങൾ(atleast myself) talking cars follow ചെയ്യുന്നത്.. This is a good one.. So.. keep it up guys.. and please try to stay loyal for the "ORIGINAL" Talking Cars followers 😇.
Thanks for bringing this up, boys. Personally, I have also been very annoyed with the whole tasteless digital transformation of the instrument cluster. Imo, nothing looks better than a neat analogue instrument cluster. It doesn’t even have to be fancy. It can be as basic as it can get (like in a Maruti 800) with just the speed markers and the needles, and even then, it’s got character. And that’s something we cannot say for digital clusters.
(Also, special mention for Citroen for achieving that disaster of a digital cluster. It is almost insulting the buyer. My Casio F91W looks better than that.)
Tax Tax Tax… isn’t it whole different for cars and bikes? And heard that the running profit a single car is 25k for Suzuki and 43k for Tata; whereas the tax is about 40% of car price.
Tata has more profit per car since Tata has upmarket models like Safari and Harrier in its arsenal. 👌
Also Nexon is currently the top selling SUV in India for the last 6 months average.
It's show time for Indian brands, Tata and Mahindra 🥰
And you guys made me feel better to have an analogue meter in my car. 😄😄
What a sensible episode.. Actually government has to standardize reverse camera, rear wiper, and hill hold too in all cars. These are fundamental features for driver and it makes drive easy and safe.
You guys have no idea how much we love your episodes! Brilliant as usual!
Hey TC...one of the best episodes..very informative..what you guys have told is absolutely spot on..always have had this thought...very happy that you both came up with such a truly informative topic..expecting more of this kind..😊
I agree 💯...we need a machine with durability rather than a gimmick features

All points u guys mentioned r correct.
Even I have a friend who believes cars r useless if it doesn't have panaromic sunroof and large touchscreens😂
Everyone has become very much obsessed with the gimmicky features of the cars.
Scooters headlights are more stress for eyes than cars while driving during night
Even in daylight.
Excellent Episode.Very Relevant Topic to be discussed in a channel .All the Wishes.Keep doing it and do provide us the needed knowledge that we really want.
Best video on modern cars so far. 👌 u guys nailed it. 👏
Thank you guys.... 🙏
Hi guys, could you do a video on car coatings. Many are there in the market ceramic, graphene, ppf and many more.Would be very helpful if u could give some insight on this also whether it's just buzz they r creating for obvious reasons.
Even I have the same concern.
Plz da a vedio about decarbanization ....
Same concern
Yes.. Each day.. new type of protective coatings are creating and totally confused🤪 which is good... Which is bad.. Which is needed..

Love random reviews 😍 keep up the good work 👍👍👍 make a top car award episodes at the end of every year featuring best cars rolled out in India market that year.
Wonderful topic picked. Very often, many car manufacturers are focusing on silly features(adding some chrome/paint job and calling it a new version) Customers in general also seem to be interested in these gimmicky features rather than cars fundamentals (engine, chassis & build quality, suspension, tyres). Looking forward to more videos like this.
You guys always come up with perfect info video...thanks.😍😍
Very nice pertinent point and something the other auto journalists don't think about you guys really know how to make it so much interesting
With each passing episode, I really wanna meet up with you guys and talk stuff like this. Please keep doing this stuff. Its really great.
Fantastic episode, dear guys! You've voiced a lot of things some of us have been thinking of. Very enjoyable, thank you, and looking forward to more such.
That's one of the reason that differs 'Talking cars' from others...

👍👍. Also all we need to have(or some authority need to prepare and publish)a basic list of actual needed things for a good car in Indian roads with better ridability, handling, safety, user friendly and update friendly which can be runnable with physical controls in case of even soft features got some failure.
Hope episodes like this soon which make someone think Goodluck 👍,vivekji your ideas are 🤩
That last suggestion was really interesting..👌
Really nice episode; thank you so much for doing it. On top of that I have request to you, can you please do a comparison of Toyota Innova crysta and xuv 700. I know there is a lot of videos available on UA-cam but I want to hear more about mechanical and practicality of both cars. Thank you!
This episode is an eye opener for me and other dear followers of yours. Thank you 😊👍

We love to hear such conversations .. please do this kind of episodes too . Thank you

Excellent episode, you guys helped the viewers to nail the facts which I usually fail to convince my friends and cousins.

Excellent discussion. Please share more 'random conversations' - they are anything but random and hugely enjoyable.

Good👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Vivek & JD for this discussion. Let me put down my thoughts also here.
During product development automobile manufacturers generally organize the features in to buckets namely "Standardized features" and "Differentiating features" in their platforms. During product integration they wisely cherry pick the apt features out of these buckets depending up on priorities of the targeted market.
These features include the powertrain function features (high engineering- production cost) and also connectivty/UX/Automation features (relatively lesser cost).
In case of cost sensitive and highly demanding markets like India, they follow this strategy to pick more of connectivity and UX features which will give a premium feel for the user with out increasing their production costs. But in more mature markets like Europe they follow different strategies.
Also now that the IC engine powertrain R&D has more or less become saturated, OEMS are investing more on connectivity, personalization and UX. That's also a reason why we see more such features available as Differentiating factors across car variants.
Makes sense, thanks for sharing and I feel relieved after watching this video and comments and that in Indian market the German cars are applying the connectivity features to differentiate. They are making it very hard that fitting rear camera for Taigun base model voids warranty!!!
Very much informed ♥️..

Nice thoughts.. I decided to buy baleno alpha only for the 360 degree camera.I am not a fan of other features provided in the car. 360 degree camera is a practical feature. But after seeing this episode, i had a second thought. Why dont consider delta model of baleno and just add an afer market 360 degree camera and alloys. Its just costs me around 75k more on the base price of delta model. When i chose an alpha model, i have to pay around 3 lakh more. Thank you guys 😍😍😍
Next variant got 6 airbags which cannot be retro fitted.
Thats a wise choice 👍
Also the alpha comes with ESP, so as JD says, "that's good in a way"
360 camera after market fit cheyyamo?

Loved this perspective. Great comments too from Anand😊
i always need manual controlls for sound/ac bcuz integrated displays are pain in the ass while using it it needs our concentration, while manual controlls can be used without looking on...
Wow... switch on the camera whenever u guys discuss... .Loved it 😍👌
Totally agree!. Looting the customers like anything. Just to get some basics tech, we need to pay a premium. We will surely see a market disruption when companies like Xiaomi and Realme starts making cars.
This is what makes talking cars unique. Much appreciated
Probably the best episode you've ever made guys!

Family pressure play an important role , I have to choose third row and sunroof giving up off roading features in my toyota SUV .
Anyway this was the most enjoyed episode , that last 5 mins cracked me up.
This is a marvelous episode... You made us to laugh and think. This is what we want... 👏👏
Extremely valid content at this point.when i bought punch amt i really felt customer is forced to buy top variant because of the features provided in it and tat one particular variant aggressively overpriced with these features. Many brands now are overpricing
The Talking Cars family always wants more of your wild ideas and discussion. It isn't good to edit off the talks from the final video or to stop the discussion in between. We want justice.... 😁😁
Wonderful video, really thought-provoking. I'll just agree to whatever you have discussed right in. Thanks for the video, bros... 👍🏻😊💙
Same thing i felt when i bought innova crysta z varient (full option) for 32.5 lakhs
And in z varient they don't give 2nd row bench seat, actually 2nd row bench seat is very usefull and convenient , and when you thing to buy and 2nd varient( V varient) they will give you bench seat but they don't give you automatic version there ,. Actually it's really annoying

All pointers are valuable especially led display and battery console space & rate.
Nowadays people needs more luxury/gimmicks than their nearby ones or neighbours even though its useless or not and they are paying for it & companies using the same as their strategies.
