Kiyokawa orchards in Parkdale, OR grows a variety of red-fleshed apples named Mountain Rose that you can find in farmer's markets. They make and market cider from the Mountain Rose variety too, named Red Flesh cider.

I had a chance to visit and help prune and collect scion wood there a number of years ago. Just unbelievable and overwhelming collection. This story only talks about apples, which is his largest collection, but he also has hundreds or thousands of varieties of pears, plums, peaches, grapes, etc. This piece must have been made a long time ago, I believe Nick was 90 when I visited, and I think he may have passed on as of now.

Would be great if his farm could be purchased by someone who will either care for the orchard or donate it to the Home Orchard Society.
Also, the red inside apple is one I would love to taste.

@@Rosarium2007 A university with an agricultural science department seems like a good idea.

It's unfortunate that an 11 year old story was posted without any kind of follow-up information. The owner died years ago, and the home orchard society has ceased operations.
For anyone interested, these people have taken up at least part of the work: temperate orchard conservancy (was originally a link but YT refuses to post it)

The Home Orchard Society disbanded in 2020. I fear the loss of agricultural legacy due to factory farming monoculture monopolies.
Same is happening to roses and I'm sure many other species.
