Crossed Extension Reflex

- * Note he isn't getting good extension to start but does demonstrate the opposite leg extension near the end of the testing.
Onset: 28 weeks gestation
Integration: 1- 4 months
Position: Supine head in midline with LEs extended
Procedure: Hold 1 leg at knee, maintaining this extremity in extension, apply firm pressure to the sole of the foot
Response: Flexor withdrawl attempt on side of stimulus. Extension of the opposite lower extremity as if to push the examiner away.
Practical example:
Imagine stepping on a nail with your right foot. Naturally, the right leg will contract, via the flexor muscles, to withdraw the foot from the source of the pain. At the same time, the right leg's extensor muscles will relax to facilitate the process with minimal resistance.
Simultaneously, the left leg will experience the exact opposite function and the leg will lock via the extensor muscle extension while the flexors relax. This is done to allow the left leg to maintain complete body weight.

Is he normal baby? Or have cp or hypotonia?
He had no complications at birth or after. He is now a very active 3 year old with no delays. He is an example of normal.

Keşke Türkçe altyazı olsa ama yinede anladım ama tatlı mı tatlı bacaklardan odaklanmadım ❤
You’re hurting the baby...couldn’t you use another object for demonstration?
Clyde Luko I understand why this upsets you (and appreciate the concern) but the purpose of this reflex is to illicit a protective mechanism. You want for the infant to recognize that it is uncomfortable and then to do something about it (either remove the limb or kick it off with the other). I promise I don’t enjoy performing this reflex and I encourage people to do this reflex near the end of their screen due to it being upsetting. Note the pin top was blunt but pointed enough to be uncomfortable. This also happens to be my baby so I was able to comfort him after I performed the reflex. For future reference know that often practitioners will use their own finger nail, the pointed end of a reflex hammer, or use a capped pen to test.
She is not hurting the baby ,, it's a procedure and it is done in that way ,,, the stroke and the resistant hand on the knee irritates the baby that's why the baby cried !! Do ur homework !!
it is quite common to use blunt object to illicit reflexes, I think the baby crying coz of the resistance applied by the lady who holds her leg for better demonstration, it won't hurt the baby but may get him/her some discomfort
Stop disturbing the baby
The baby is not being disturbed. It is normal and appropriate for health care providers to complete these tests to check for normal neuro functioning. *Note too that this is my baby so I am able to gauge how he is doing and comfort him if he becomes upset.
Big thanks to the volunteer for being so cooperative ^_^
