  • Tokyo is overdue for a large earthquake! There is a 70% chance that one will strike in the next 30 years and when it does, it will cost as much as the entire yearly GDP of Japan.

First time trying a video like this. I take this as a learning opportunity. BTW, the government revised its projections, stating that they number of commuters stuck downtown will be 4.53 million, instead of the 3 million stated in this video. Also, the headline of an article in the Japan Times states "expert warns of 'blind faith' in disaster resilience".

I'm in the states and my office is an all-glass exterior. For tornados, we're all just supposed to crowd into one of the meeting rooms and wait for the millions of shards of glass to eviscerate us.

OMG! I thought that for tornadoes, you had to hide in a basement or shelter. I really hope it doesn't come to that. Please stay safe!

This is both very sad and interesting. I hope for your sake they change things in the future.

Thank you but I don't think they will. From my experience here in Japan, groupthink rules in many Japanese organizations, especially politics. Once a course of action is decided, everyone gambaru's or perseveres even if a better solution comes up. It is why, in my opinion, they didn't surrender until late in WW II. They were not fanatic like they are often portrayed; just they couldn't see themselves doing anything different from what they had been doing all along. As I pointed out in the video, they have plans in place when disaster strikes. But when those plans fail, they become fatalistic. Shikata ga nai/It can't be helped.

Another thing: this is not the worst possible disaster that will happen. The Nankai Trough Earthquake will cause far more damage. I will be doing a video on that later.

@@DadCanInJapan That's really unfortunate. I'm looking forward to the video, though; this one was really well done!

Sorry, I haven't played super golf since they randomized where you start. It was impossible to come up with strategies.

    Unfortunately, DadCan, you predicted it.

What's worse is that it happened on New Years Day as well; I was on holiday in Osaka just days before the earthquake. Thankfully I wasn't affected. Travelling to Japan made me interested in its rapid transit systems, especially the Shinkansen.

    I hope it doesn't happen!

Me too. At least when I am not downtown. But sadly, it will happen someday. I can only hope that I am wrong and it isn't as bad as I think it will be.
