I was literally talking to my dad like 3 weeks ago about this as an idea and he said he didn’t think it’d work too well, glad to see someone do it and do it well. I’m gonna have to try to build one now.
Id definitely go for a larger board with more pallets this is going to be a real challenge to surf. However its a fun project and an easy way to test out the chambered board process on budget. Worst case you end up with a cool wall hanger or turn it into a coffee table.
@@WaveWasters no yeah I was thinking of a staggered pattern like bricks to get a longer piece and after something a bit smaller to make sure it works how I want it, going with a longboard design

Beautiful work as always👌 So ive been watching some Japanese wood working stuff and seeing the long uniform shavings that come from their block planes i wondered if its possible to make a board from laminating those shavings. Just a wood laminated board i guess but maybe paper mache style, could even lightly mist a pile of wood shavings with something to form a rough blank. Anyway look forward to seeing how that pallet surfs😊
Thanks! I could see it working if you lamed it into a sheet, then used it with an internal frame. Maybe some form of resin infusion could work to make the sheet. Would be really cool board but a ton of work.

Thanks! I'm still trying to test it out, I havn't had much for waves to work with. I have had a leak in it which lead to a small delam from the wood warping when drying from the leak. Better glue would have made it a non issue but I used what I had. Verdict is still out if this board works or not haha. If I glassed it or used epoxy/waterproof glue it. It would have been a better choice. Pallet wood is far from ideal but being free, and with how this turned out even with the small leak I think its worth trying a larger build. I love the idea of the sandwiching it between veneer, if you try it you will have to let me know how it goes!
@@asce2273 Thanks! I went back and forth on adding foam to it especially where I didn't glass it. In the end I decided to go without. Partly so if it leaks really bad I can dry it out quickly, and partly to minimize materials used. Maybe for the next one I'll try adding foam, I have lots of scraps I could use.
How would foam inside make it more buoyant? You're adding more mass to the same volume. Maybe it would help with thermal swelling and contracting to lower the loading on the glue joints. I could see it adding some structural support on deck loading for hollow frame and skin would board though.
@@callalilycollective Only makes it more buoyant when it eventually leaks, which is why I considered it😆. Other wise your just adding a little bit of weight/structural support. I could also be wrong though.
@@WaveWasters continuing to play devils advocate, won’t open cell foam increase the water retained once it does leak? Adding a vent and airing it out without foam would probably reduce water weight more.
But this is chambered wooden board, with this method of construction you usually won't add in any foam. What you mean probably is different type of construction when they shape a board out of EPS foam and then they glue on the wooden rails and vaccuum bag the wooden skin deck and bottom... if I am wrong I would be happy to be corrected.
