Having a hard day today trying to figure out how to install new electric in my house. It’s nice to come to this channel it brings me peace. Thank you Buckin and Thank you to this community.
Years ago, my grandfather had some selective logging done on the family farm. The company that did the job left anything under 10” on the selected trees. There were a few others that had to be felled to make room to fall the selected ones. Needless to say, we had a lot of firewood to process. I spent countless hours limbing with an axe, while he ran the chainsaw. There really is a right and wrong way to do it, and a truly sharp axe is a beautiful thing to work with. My personal worst felling experience was a 12” diameter hickory, felled with an estwing camp axe. Not a bad tool for limbs, but not a great fallers axe. The blisters ran deep, and took weeks to erupt. Before anyone says it wasn’t sharp…..that axe could shave hair. Was finished on a 9micron belt, then stropped to 25K diamond paste, and the finally on clean leather.
Good morning mr. Buckin, I am just getting back to comment. Billy I sure wish we lived closer. If for nothing else but to just come over and B S . Your chopping axe is a fantastic tool. And as always you swing it well. I Look forward to seeing you and everyone else on your live feed today sunday. Love Wins .
That took me back fifty years when you were splitting the piece of wood with 32 degree edge and gave it the "Flicker" description of the technique. My PaPa taught me that and I shall never forget him or the work skills he taught me . True and I miss him and his son who passed before him . I carry on . God keep their souls . Looking at how amazing this axe is, really makes me want to see buckin with one of the axes they use in the championships, like in the stihl timbersports.
They are great, but they will wear you out and are a bit menacing to swing at first. Going from a 4½-5 lb head to a 7-9lb with and 8" edge is unweildy at first, flat sure footing is a must at first.

Hi Buckin' - I'm restoring my father's axe and my grandfather's axe. Both are double bit and great splitters.I don't have much opportunity to fell or buck but want them up to the task when I can. Is there an optimal angle for each side that you would recommend? One has a 34-1/2" handle. The other is 35-1/2". Sure wish I could attach pictures. If I remember right one of them is what you called a hot rod. Hope you see this. Love your videos and your take on life. I very much appreciate what you give to the community.
Depends on the initial bevel grind. Is it thick and bulbous, or is it skinny and slender?
If the former, try aiming for a total angle of 32 to 40* (16* or 20* each side).
If the latter, try aiming for a total angle of about 16* to 24* (8* or 12* each side)
I find ultra sharp axes need to be re-ground, and re-honed frequently, unless they're some really wicked steel (Although even then, the damage that can occur to those types of blade edges can be more difficult to fix). Having a high quality, relatively fine pocket stone (maybe a hard arkansas) will save you a lot of time chopping.

Now just imagine the time when men built homes and barns with nothing but hand tools!
15 degrees inclusive means 7.5 dps, that’s is a VERY lean grind for an axe… nearing knife grind territory. Hence why it cuts like a laser.

My rule is with a heavy axe don't swing for the fences. A lighter axe you can control easier so you can use a bit more force.
