How to Deal with House Sparrows/English Sparrows - Sparrow Trap

- In this video, we show the sparrow trap we purchased to deal with common house sparrows (English Sparrows). This was the action we took after losing several blue birds and purple martins to pesky house sparrows.
Within 24 hours after setting up the trap, we caught five sparrows in the trap.

Have used this trap for 2 years now. It works well. Unfortunately, while we were away for a weekend last summer a male sparrow killed all 6 of our beautiful Tree Swallows who were almost ready to fledge. They are ruthless and a constant threat to my Bluebird couple (and their 5 nestlings) and the 2 sets of swallows nesting in our backyard birdhouses right now. I have set up the trap near the birdhouses and have caught 2 males and a female in last couple days. I have easily disposed of 30+ since last year and happily all my songbirds have returned to the feeders! Great tool to have to combat these pest!

That trap works very very well. I caught 175 English house sparrows(actually a weaver finch) in 2 months. They really like popped popcorn. A number of small American songbirds returned to my yard and the neighborhood after the decline of the sparrows. I throw them onto a 16 x 16 concrete paver. It's a very quick end. I let the Cardinals, cowbirds, magenta house-finches, and the one blue jay go. They were brought to the US to deal with a caterpillar problem, and are the direct cause of the decline of the Eastern Bluebird. Happy trapping.
That is misinformation about how the English house sparrow came to the USA.

Love the trap and the added shelter box. If a native bird happens to enter the trap once you go near the trap all the sparrows go into the shelter box and you can just hold the exit flap open the native bird will fly out.
I have removed the nest box as after trapping a couple in it is like the sparrows got wise to it and would go in, plus I have a wren/chickadee box up in same area.
Feed the house sparrows to your cat.
I built one to exact scale and so far caught 3 male sparrows, but then no more trapped. I eliminate 2 but still no more. I had it on a small table under my pavilion so decided to put in outside on the ground on a piece of plastic and try that. I only use milet so maybe will try popcorm. Lets get rid of the sparrows so my Purple Martins can come back!!!

Just had the same trap delivered yesterday. Took three days from when I ordered it. Hope mine works as well as yours I’m in northern Ohio.

No need to touch the counterweight...
Simply add a washer or bolt nut to the elevator cage, attached with a twist tie to make the elevator more sensitive.

Id like to put my dispatched hosp to good use. My local Raptor rehab will not take sparrows and only feeds them organic chickens. Does anyone have thoughts on composting them or planting them below vegetables crops like tomatoes?
After I 'dose' the English Sparrows with high speed lead, I let the local cats have some free 'birdfood'.
By the next morning, the dispatched English Sparrows are gone.
No fuss....no muss.

Hi Jim, i'm from Ohio also. Wellington. See this is a older video, but I just got my trap Tuesday. I making my own shelter, not paying over $130. for one. You have chicken coop. I will be starting with bread to get mine and then some cheap bird food for inside. Hopefully hear back from you. Have a great spring.
Nice trap, eliminated about 45 - 6 years ago with ST-1 trap, they have broken my bluebird eggs once, I have bluebirds, purple martins I will never let them invasive evil bastards nest in my yard.
I just ordered one of these. Can't wait to put it into use. My sparrow problem has gotten way out of control. I've had chickens for years and a purple martin house. Those darn sparrows have taken over everything. I use a pellet gun on them, but they are very smart and now readily recognize when I have it in hand! Amazing. During the summer, I can sometimes trap them in the chicken coop, then dispatch them with my BB gun, but I have to be very quick and sneaky to do this. They seem to quickly figure this stuff out! I'm hoping this will be the answer to my problem.

Ha Ha! I never noticed that was in the video! Yes, that was my primary control method before getting the trap....although my wife got tired of me putting holes into the Martin Houses. :-)
What do you then do with them?
We dispatch them and store them in the freezer for our friend that is a falconer.

We place them into an old pillow case and swing that against a tree hard enough to kill them in a single stroke.

If you have a large tote, you can fill it full of water and drown them.
@@jimginnyohio Not so sure about that could just stun them. I use a pair of long nose pliars just pinch their neck , instant death .

Trap dries in 20 minutes and ready to reset.
I've been trying to get yellow finches to show up. I noticed you had a feeder at end of this video. Can you give me info on feeder placement and food?
We have those on separate sides of our yard. You may catch finches in the trap too. It's important to check the trap frequently and know how to properly identify and release the good birds.
If it works make another UA-cam channel video so I can see it I like that idea
world it be better to have chickens for pest control?
In my limited experience, having chickens made the sparrow problem even worse since the chicken feed attracted the sparrows and encouraged them to nest, and my docile chickens did nothing about it. I wish I knew about sparrow traps back then.
I have that trap. Bluebirds are great birds. I have 9 bluebird boxes. Martins not so great to have around. Dragonfly’s eat a lot more mosquitoes than Martins and a Martins favorite food is dragonfly’s. Martins actually increase the mosquito problem by eating dragonfly’s which is opposite of what most people think. Bats are a much better mosquito option. I have about 30 bats that live in my bathouse. My neighbor has Martin houses and I see them eating dragonfly’s on my farm pond.

No problems at all. Mine worked perfectly right out of the box. We did add a Pringles potato chip can into it for the birds to use as a shelter. But that was the only modification we did. Good luck with yours!
We did make one additional modification later….
We added two nails/screws onto the platform where the birds enter the trap. This was to make the entry way more narrow so that doves couldn’t enter the trap. They are too large to enter into the box and are difficult to remove from the pivot mechanism.

Bread is good, but monitor it because you will catch a lot of native species.
...now that I think of it, I too have an unused chicken coop, which makes a great trap itself. When I had free-ranging hens the e.s. would always annoyingly fly in there to eat the feed. All I have to do is close the door and use a net to catch them, saving myself almost $100.
How do you separate out the native captured birds from the sparrows without escapes?
Just reach in and take them out.
Great video. I am making a trap just like that one. Last year sparrows ate most of my fruit tree fruit. I would use a bb gun to shoot them and my dog would finish them off and he would try to eat them. This year we will see if this trap works. I think I'll put some seed on my outside table the first few days. Then out the trap out with seed around a few more. Then seed in the trap...
What's your go to way of dispatching sparrows once you trap them?
Honestly, the fastest way is to remove them from the trap and throw them very hard into a concrete pad I have near the trap. This way they are not stressed in the process. I used to put them into a pillow case before doing that, but they didn't always die on the first hit.

I have tried using this for three years. It does not work the sparrows escape, !!!
Interesting! I've never known any birds to escape from mine. I always try keeping a bait bird in the trap and it has always remained without any problems.
I would suggest trying to place a camera onto your trap to see how this is occurring. If you see that, maybe send the video to the manufacturer to see if they can make suggestions or improvements.
I've been using this trap for two weeks and have captured 23 so far with one escape. It was really my fault the hosp got away. He activated the elevator but did not enter the hole and somehow was trapped under the elevator. When I depressed it manually he flew out so fast from under the arm and escaped. Im fairly certain I recapture him a few days ago.

Yes, most birds are migratory, so they will return.
I'm going to buy this because I have a lot of sparrows fighting for the food that I put specifically for native birds in my area and they have been taking over and chasing away the rest. They are so destructive so I'm setting a trap for them and um hoping this can catch as many as it can. The only issue I have is how to dispose of them quickly and where to I take these dead birds. I can't just leave them around since in my neighborhood we have kids running around. Toddlers and older.
I quickly dispatch them by placing into a pillow case and smacking that against a tree a few times. It is quick and humane. I then bury them in my compost pile.
Freeze the dead birds in a plastic bag, put them in the garbage container when you hear the truck down the street.
@@jimginnyohio hello, not trying to hijack the tread but I’m having the same problem on what to do with them after there died. How do you keep the birds from stinking in the compost pile? I’m sorry but I will not put these nasty birds in my fridge.

@@jimginnyohio that would be a lot of digging for me because let me tell you we have 1000s if not more of these birds I believe we have an invasion of both starlings and house sparrows going on here and I think they are a very big problem wish there was more that could be done. Those nasty House Sparrows have gone inside our bluebird nest box and pecked open multiple bluebird egg clutches.
I bought a scoped .22 pellet rifle and have given almost all of the little SOBs a bad case of lead poisoning.
Our bluebirds have now raised many successful broods!
I ordered two of these and neither worked - it just made the problem worse because I put food out to attract them which I wouldn’t normally do. They were banged up and high maintenance constantly having to adjust. For those that are considering ordering these the company won’t refund your money so for this user it was a waste of $150
You must be doing something wrong! Not sure how they would get “banged up” since they just sit there. Once initially adjusted, they are NOT going to get out of balance on there own unless someone is re-adjusting them. That’s just how they are!
Ours has worked flawlessly for two seasons now with zero adjustments necessary. We saw far fewer house sparrows this year and an increase in the song birds. I didn’t even need to use my pellet gun this past season.
@@jimginnyohio they were banged up when I received them and the bottom isn’t flat either and the arms on both are messed up. I’m just trying to warn people this product doesn’t work for everyone and the fact there’s no refund once you use it is a bit ridiculous. There needs to be a balance in responses/opinions. I’m glad it worked for you. It didn’t work for me and I’m tired of hearing “I’m doing something wrong” when I worked with the company to resolve for over a month, adjusted the units as instructed, used the foods that would attract them, and read the instructions over and over again.
I’m just letting consumers know there are other products out there they should explore and my experience with this particular product was it didn’t work. I caught one sparrow and the rest just flew around it and wouldn’t enter it even with the decoy that eventually escaped through the trap door that I secured but apparently not tight enough. It was a time consuming maintenance heavy process in my experience. It was off the ground too. So I’ll try to sell them since I can’t get my money back. Maybe they’ll work for someone else.
