Also, the heating pad is such a good trick! I have arthritis so I'm sure it would love some pre-crochet heating pad snuggles.

Take it from one who knows. You can get permanent injuries from crocheting too long. It's like tennis elbow. I almost got shoulder surgery before I figured out what the problem was. You're young but your body can only take so much repetitive motion.
