  • Ok, this video has been my headache for the past two weeks and I almost got to the stage of giving up on youtube completely because of it haha
I had a lot of problems with the sound of this video (as you will notice). I made some attempts at correcting the worst of it but I am not even close to being satisfied with it… but I thought that if I don’t finish it and put it out here, it will drive me crazy! There is some information that I really wanted to share with you about using cheaper art supplies, that’s why I am sharing this video, forgetting about it and moving on (and buying a new microphone:)

Your advice and knowledge of pigments is so valuable to me. I love those Daniel Smith blues you showed in the packing video. And these earths. I also love how you've developed your own very unique palette. I want to do the same. Thank you!

thank you very much! I am very happy if you found something useful for you in this video. And I feel like your own colour palette just comes to you eventually if you keep painting and just give it time:)

I love arches, but I also love the 2 you are using here. New York central is a very good inexpensive paper, and Rosa watercolour is fantastic and very inexpensive. My 2 cents.

I'm defiantly seeing moody skies with the some of those granulating white night colours. Thank you for this video i will have to get some of these paints now, hehe.

Yes, you’re absolutely right!! I haven’t thought about skies - might be interesting to try! I hope you’ll have fun with paints if you decide to buy them:)

Awesome! I was thinking about getting a few Schmincke SG, now I'll definitely try to get some of those White Nights. I already have some of the regular ones and I like them a lot. Thanks for another great video!

thank you for leaving a comment:) yes, I feel like while the choice is wider in the DS and Schmincke lines, you can get a whole set of WN for the price of 1-2 tubes of the formers haha they are all not very useful anyway, so why not save up some money on experimenting and buying things for fun:)

Some very measured and thoughtful commentary in this video Elizaveta 💜 I like the moderate approach to supplies vs creativity you discussed and a lovely colour selection. That Etchr paper looks to have some nice texture! 💛

thank you! yes, I feel like it helped me a lot in the past year and thought maybe someone needed to hear it too haha but I understand that we all have different views and approached to different things.

Totally agree with what you said about cheap papers, some of my best work is done on that cheap cheap blue canson sketchbook

The Daniel Smith Earth Tones you swatched were colors common in the American Southwest. The desert and mountains in those areas are represented in that palette.

oh, I didn't know that! I knew it was the name of the set but I didn't know these were the colours picked to represent a specific area. It definitely explains the colour choice! I really want to visit this area now haha

You should! I spent some time in New Mexico and the scenery is breathtaking. We would be driving through the mountains and come around a curve and suddenly you'd see the most amazing view. When you have the time, look up Taos and Santa Fe, which are both in New Mexico. The Grand Canyon runs through it, too.

I too used to get intimidated by using good quality watercolour paper but I have been told time and time and time again that you need to do your colour studies on the paper you intend using for your Good Painting as it's the only way to you will understand how you'll handle the finished product - it took me a looooong time to follow this advice because I didn't want to damage my good paper but I got soooo despondent with getting 2 different results from 2 different papers - a different result from my colour study on different paper from my Good Painting. So now too do my colour studies I use a 1/8 sheet of my good paper and ¼ sheet of the same quality paper for my 'good painting' and I know exactly what results I'm going to get every time. To me the MOST important art supply is good quality 100% cotton paper which I believe cannot be compromised whereas it is quite easy to good very good quality professional watercolour paints at a very reasonable price - White Nights is a brand I love and I just loooooved those colours you swatched..
In Australia good quality watercolour supplies are sooooo unbelievably expensive and if I couldn't buy my good quality supplies at approximately 50% cheaper from the UK I would not be able to afford to paint with watercolours...

totally agree with you! I was in the exact same situation - my mind could not accept this idea of using expensive paper for some practice scribbles, and I started using backsides of my failed artworks for some preliminary studies. That's why I was so happy to discover baohong paper - it's still great quality but a bit cheaper.
And I am very glad to hear that you have this opportunity to buy cheaper art supplies and continue your watercolour journey :)

I’m watching this in summer of 2024 and the price has gone up on this brand I believe because of all the buzz around it being inexpensive . Oh well .
