Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

There's another Corman Poe-based film The Raven...also with Vincent Price and a very Young Jack Nicholson. From 1963.

Roger Corman’s sudden leap into Technicolor period bodices and ruffles was mostly in response to the popularity of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing’s good-looking period-costume spins on Dracula and Frankenstein over at Hammer Studios.
As for Vincent Price at Amer.Int’l, it never got Hammer-er than 1971’s gorgeously designed and slightly tongue-in-cheek “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”. (I showed that to a friend, and he was convinced it really was a Poe story, just because of the ghoulish plot and presence of Vincent Price.)

I love any of the old horror films with Vincent Price in them. I loved watching these as a kid on Sir Graves Ghastly Presents out of Detroit.

Happy Halloween, Jen! 😁🎃👻 It's great to see you back with another great movie reaction video for spooky season!
The Fall of the House of Usher, released in 1960 as 'House of Usher,' was the first of several horror collaborations between Vincent Price and Roger Corman's American International Pictures, which was the American version of Britain's Hammer Films Studios, producing dozens of horror and science fiction films during the 1950s and 1960s. After House of Usher, Price starred in several other American International horror films based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe, such as The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), Tales of Terror (1962), The Raven (1963), The Masque of the Red Death (1964), The Tomb of Ligeia (1964), and other works such as The Haunted Palace (1963, based on H.P. Lovecraft's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward), Diary of a Madman (1963, based on Guy du Maupassant's The Horla), and The Last Man on Earth (1964, based on Richard Matheson's I Am Legend).

"Spartacus", "Lawrence of Arabia", and "Dr. Zhivago" all had overtures and intermissions. Movies from the Sixties over three hours in length were filmed this way.

Don't forget Richard Matheson, who wrote the screenplay. He was one our finest fantasy, science fiction and horror writers. His most well-known work is "Duel" and the third story in the tv movie "Trilogy of Terror."

I’ll second The Witchfinder General recommendation above (sometimes shown under the title The Conqueror Worm). Also my favorite of Price’s Poe films is Masque of the Red Death-brilliant work.

Witchfinder General isn’t really “horror”, as nothing supernatural (or Poe-sourced) happens in it-
It was more the 60’s-provocateur movie that invented “Inquisition porn”, the late 60’s subgenre of period movies about corrupt, sexually repressed inquisitors who sadistically false-tortured maidens for “witchcraft”, ie. just wanting to do their own thing. The hippie era was not kind to horror films.

The Fall of the House of Usher was shot in just 15 days, Jen. The budget was $300,000, and $100,000 went to Vincent Price. Sets and props from Universal Studios were purchased for $2,500 and redressed to create the Usher mansion. The misshapen trees seen on the Usher estate were actual trees which had burned in a fire in the Hollywood Hills. The burning of the mansion was accomplished by two cameramen filming the burning of a barn in Orange County.

There are several Poe adaptations made around this same time, all directed by Roger Corman and most, with few exceptions, starring Vincent Price. This was the first, but the others-in no particular order-are The Pit and the Pendulum(my personal favorite),Tales of Terror,Tomb of Ligeia,The Premature Burial(this one starring Ray Milland),Masque of the Red Death,The Oblong Box,and probably a few others that I am forgetting. All the ones I mentioned also have sumptuous color and are great fun.Maybe after the the holidays you might want to discuss those as well

the tv show isn't about this particular Poe's tale, it adapts other short stories...
Roger Corman directed several Poe adaptations from the mid to the late 60s, Vincent Price being in everyone of them. My favourites are this one, The Masque Of The Red Death and The Tomb Of Ligeia

I love this movie and yes, there are other Price/Corman Poe adaptations that are awesome as well. I have a theory about the movie… in the short story, the main character and Madeleine do not have a romantic relationship. I think they added the young love element for the film to appeal to younger audiences but it really doesn’t make sense in the context of the story lol

Back in the 1950s and 1960s, a lot of movies had overtures for the purpose of setting the mood of the film, and also gave the audience time to get to their seats, Jen. Once movie theaters began having more and more advertisements and trailers for coming attractions prior to the feature, the overtures were no longer practical.

The last shot in “The Pit and the Pendulum” scared the crap outta me as a kid ! I saw Mr Price at a public speaking event in the early 70s at our local liberal arts college, I was starstruck as he spoke on literature and poetry etc, , thanks

Glad to see you reacting to some old classics Jen. The thing with all the Corman/Price Poe collaborations is that they have a certain vibe to them, a weird mixture of soap opera meets Italian gothic horror films. Price also released his fair share of records based on Poe, as well as other horror themed albums.
You mentioned evil Vinnie Price? You need to watch "Witchfinder General" or "Cry Of The Banshee" which are both decent gothic-style films. The fear of being buried alive is called, Taphophobia which Poe used in a few of his films.
I'm sure I heard, or read, somewhere of a Count who, fearing of being buried alive, had a string looped into his coffin linked to a bell that he could pull if he woke up once in his coffin! ⚰
