MAJOR BMW Engine Failure! Let's Tear It Down and Find Out What Went Wrong [Part 1] 🤯

- BMW N52b25 Engines are notoriously known for burning oil and sometimes it can be a nightmare trying to find out where the oil is going. This is my old engine out of my BMW 325i (e90) that was running great for a few years until it started burning oil at 1L/300kms. I knew something failed in the engine so I decided to rebuild and swap in a better engine into the car. You can learn how to do this yourself by watching my youtube videos.

You son of a beesh with the editing!!! 10/10 awesome!
Man, best comment of 2024 so far. Thanks bro! This one was fun to put together 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Mine is 2007 n52-b30 . Has 228,000 miles every 1,500-2000 miles it uses an leaks 1 quart. It also ticks randomly. Once the engine has ran higher rpm’s for awhile ticking always goes away. Great engine with just a couple quirks.. love the n52 content definitely appreciate it !
The power of worn valve stem seals and prolonged oil change intervals. You can thank the first owner!
Bruh...😬😬😬😅😅😅
@@buildanddrive what happened is that some cylinders got overwhelmed by oil burning.
Valve stem seals were bad, ccv was bad, piston oil' rings were clogged...
That would give like 1L of oil burned every 500km. That is a death sentence to the engine.
Great job homie!
Another great video , these videos will be like gold to anyone who owns a n52 so probably millions of people . Keep up the good work bro . My n52b25 is running through about 1 liter every 1000 miles how’s your rebuilt engine holding up on oil consumption ?
Thanks for the kind comments! 🙏🏼 It's running about the same 1L/1600kms.
So it's still burning oil after the rebuild? What do you think went wrong? Considering rebuilding mine
I didn't use the new piston design. You can either drill your original pistons or buy the new design. It improves the oil flow in the cylinders
Sold my 325i n52 after only 6 months. It was burning oil 1 liter every 300 km's. I tried every trick i could find but the engine was done. I think it had the same problems as yours.
Dang, sorry to hear. I took apart my engine that was burning oil and I'm going to figure out what went wrong with it. Right now it looks like a combination of worn piston rings, clogged or damaged oil rings and maybe worn valve guides/seals
looking forward to your next video bro ✌
I checked many of your videos. I have same engine as yours. Currently its 315k km. When i revved high one year ago, it prob ate oil at high rate. I dont remember numbers. But I decided to drive max 3k rpm so I can try find leaks and repair under the time. I kept driving like that next 12 months, I didnt had add 1 litre at all. But sometimes it had rough idle. Recently I changed spark plugs, it greatly improved rough idle. It will be interesting when I start drive and see if it improves mileage :) I will try fix all small stuff like seals and cleaning before try high rpm revving.
Cool. That's great that your car isn't eating oil when you drive it normally. Glad you are fixing up the car! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
What s your car? 330i?
poor maintenance oil and filter change intervals and spark plugs. pretty simple stuff.
These plugs have only 5k on them.
unfortunately these engines have crappy design flaws, so maintenance only goes so far.
Yes, alot of the flaws were fixed in the n52b30... And then BMW screwed up again with the n53b30 😂😂😂
@@buildanddrive right 😂😂
What are your crappy design flaws?
hey bro, I was just wondering where you took the torque specks for your connecting rod bolts? I noticed that you did 20NM and then 60 degrees and 60 degrees. The reason I ask is because I have just done mine and I used 20NM followed by 70 degrees period. I took these numbers from my TIS workshop manual. I tried searching for your car N52 B25 as aposed to mine N52 B30 and my TIS come back with the same result 20NM 70 degree angle. Just curious. ✌
It was from the TIS online. I can try to find it again. Glad you checked for your engine 💪🏼
cheers bro 👍
So this is the engine that u replaced with the rebuilt one right?
Yeah, this is the original engine in the car. I took it out and replaced it with the rebuilt one.
@@buildanddrive ohhh okay haha i was watching the live stream and i was hoping that it wasn’t the engine that you just rebuilt 💀💀
I tried to livestream 2 times and each time the wifi died and I couldn't get it back online so I just made a video instead. ☠️
I can't seem to find part 2 of this, the block teardown part. Can you post a link? Thanks
I'm still editing this second part to this video
Here is part 2: ua-cam.com/video/uR4qSo6k4S8/v-deo.html
25k km oil change interval not a good idea, forget what bmw says… they make their self look good on paper… leak valve stems, clogged piston oil ring and busted pcv valve could push oil unintended part of the engine… use right weight engine oil and oil brand that dont full around the recipes of the product… i live in Calgary- Canada, in winter i use 0w-20, summer i use 5w-40 bwm-LL1… time to time i put detergent additives to dissolve some crust and pick them up from vanos check valve to see anything chocks the engine… bmw n52 engines not a proper design for the oil washing down from lifters and valves area, you’ll always collect gunk up there, to keep it clean you’ll change your oil more often and select right weight for the time of the year… go thin in winter -25 to 0, go thicker like 5-30,40… never ever use 20w50, thats the dumbest idea spread in Europe that they think they should… even in Europe people still using water as a coolant, they saying we don’t get cold, antifreeze its not about the only stop freezing its also creating high boiling point plus lubricant for water pump… little long comment but small info to share for better future for our bimmers…
Thanks for the comment to help others learn about these engines. These early n52s did not have great oil flow design but they improved this in the n52b30. There are a lot of small issues that happen over time as you described. What detergent additives do you use?
@@buildanddrive i use liqui-moly valve clean for fuel and MoS2 anti-friction for oil once a year… when i used anti-friction additive i use the oil 10k km… it has black friction particles that smooth out scratches… when you pour anti friction oil, make sure shake the can and rinse inside of the bottle few times and pour into engine until you see the bottom of the bottle shiny metal… top it up liqui-moly toptech 4200 5w-30,40 and good to go for 10k km, even 15k km…
@@bimmerx440 do you use them together?
@@buildanddrive same time…
@@bimmerx440 interesting. I tried the valve clean before to try and fix the ticking noise when I was using 0w40 but it didn't help. A good 5w40 helped fix it.
do you recommend n52b30 or it has same issues ? like burning oil 1l /500/1000 km
N52b30 normally does not have these oil burning issues
I thought valve stem seals
Let's find out in the next video 👌🏼
first again 😂
😂😂😂 ✌🏼
Yo bro, great video, thanks for the upload. I would definitely think that your valve stem oil seals have gone but would really like to see how the bottom end is. Will wait to see future episodes. By the way Ms Build & Drive was pretty quick on her analysis 😂😂😂
Yeah, she was like "this sh*t is broken" 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Thank you for so interesting videos. I have the same engine (N52B25AF). The oil consumption on these engines is a well know issue. It is mainly due to a bad piston design. The pistons design was updated on 2010 and the problem seems to be gone. Here you are the updated piston BMW part number: 11257612982 (OEM Kolbenschmidt 40407600).
Thanks. That's helpful! 🙏🏽
