8 months later and I’m still wondering the same thing 🤣 that shows how this cars require special attention (knowledge) and why you should never leave them at the local corner shop for repairs.
Something was left inside this engine from a prior repair. Debris couldn’t have been “sucked” in through the intake tract as it would get caught up on the intercoolers.
Is there no warning sensor regards to the oil throughput\pressure ? I guess one would not factor out sabotage of that engine with that amount of junk in the top of the block ?
There is definitely a pressure sensor on the S63 / N63 engines however I believed it wasn't triggered or the person driving the car failed to realise the light was on.
That was gasket maker material overheated. I’ve seen this kill many engines in my shop. Excessive gasket material causes it which is bmw says not to use it. Except 2 little small areas on front timing cover. Two lil dots nothing more. The gaskets are enough. Never use a gasket supplement
like silicone gasket ? I am really killing myself trying to find out where that's come from but its is a plausible explanation if the previous shop overuse silicone which would later on cause all that trouble. Thanks
I find that hard to believe, this stuff was clearly in a liquefied form. Dunno if RTV even can get that way, but it would take over 400F to get there, which the oil is not going to be at. You should get one of those pieces of plastic analyzed to find out what it is. Only the PCV system should go to both the oil and combustion chamber. Speaking of which, that dark fluid on the piston, what was that?
Couldn’t find the video where you’re talking about the oil pickup tube please link if you can or make a video about it I don’t see any videos on UA-cam of people talking about it thanks
Hello DNL , thank you for this video and solving the problem :D and telling why was it caused , i really apreciate it. But i also want to ask about how much do you think its already risky to buy a car with this engine mileage? Are these S63 engines manufacturated and okay with running about 100K miles? How much would you say its already too much , of course i mean engine with good oil changes in time and good care. Thank you , peter
Hi Peter, the biggest challenge when buying these cars now days is that since they have depreciated in price and become cheaper, more people have bought and trashed them with tunes and poor maintenance. The S63TU (in these cars) are much more reliable than the original S63 in the X5m and I honestly believe the miles dont really reflect how good or bad the engine is - If you are lucky (and do you do diligence) to get a car that has not been abused it could very well run another 50k miles before it really need a rebuild.
Hi, I use full Synthetic 5w40 or you could also use 5w30 - my recommendation is that you stick with the oil specs BMW requires. Many people suggest you should use different oil but I completely disagree. If you had the bearings done you are well aware of the potential issues of trashing the car while the engine is still cold 🤣
There are two pick up tubes on the oil pump - you can access the lower one if the lower sump is removed, you then simply unscrew the tube from the pump and clean it if needed - the Upper pickup tube cannot be seen or cleaned unless the bottom of the engine (upper pan) is disassembled.
Hi, the best time to rebuild these engines is before it is seized 🤣 it’s a lot cheaper too ! Send us an email and I’ll be happy to help if you live nearby.
Absolutely NOT ! But if you just bought the car or had some major service (internal components) done recently, wouldn’t hurt spend $30 on a gasket and drop the pan during your next oil change.
It will depend a lot on how the previous owner treated the car however these engine will still scream for a rebuild at around 150k kms - The gaskets, orings and seals will perish due to the high heat so if you are keeping the car for long it would be a good strategy to just spend it $$ all at once then enjoy a trouble free car
Unrelated rant: I still wish bmw would do a simple v8 with supercharger like the dead reliable hellcat and old amg motors. Every bmw m engine has had serious mechanical problems and it’s honestly not acceptable. They always overcomplicate their engine designs then have multiple later versions to fix issues. N54, N63, etc. They could really eliminate v8 engines and just run the turbo 6 in 5 series with similar power levels because bmw does 6 cylinders best.
The V8s are beautiful engines, their main issue however is that people would still rely on the BMWs suggested 15k kms oil change interval and although it will be fine for the first 100k kms the engines are set to fail after that - ano the bright side, most of the issues can be rectified before the engine blows up but the majority of people who buy these cars at over 100k kms just rely on hope 🤣
What went wrong? Paul Roche retired from BMW and was replaced with engineers who followed the orders of MBA's in management to cut costs at the expense of quality in engine design and engineering. The result is that there hasn't been a good, reliable BMW since the E46, and even that has problems.
They are great cars with awesome engines however gone are the days you could simply drop your car off the the local "corner shop" to get serviced (like the E46)
It is a lot of plastic, and it’s intriguing cause I found in 3 different places: outside the engine, inside in timing guides & sump, also on top of a piston !
Hi, unfortunately no. The only thing you have to be really careful when outing the engine apart is to loose the head bolts (from outside in) and to not mix the hydraulic lifters
Hi, it depend a lot on the year model you have since the N63 on the M550i (after 2020) is pretty much the same engine as the S63. For the earlier models (N63 and N63TU the main difference when compared to the S63 would be the pistons (creating a different compression ratio) , exhaust manifolds, turbos, cams and the software the engine runs on.
Im not a mechanic but love doing small jobs om my Car but Can you Pls tell me how The hell do ypu remember where everything is going when you asemble The whole thing :)
That’s a fair question 🤣 well, I’m used to working on these cars but if it’s the first time you’re doing something I’d recommend you taking hundreds of photos, step-by-step and using small ziplock bags to organize/identify all bolts - When putting things back together you just go through the photos in reverse order - that kind of help figuring out what goes where 👍
the plastic on top of the piston is what is driving me nuts,,,, it had to be placed in the intake and inside the engine at the same time,,,,so mostly sabotage
That looks like plastic or some kind of epoxy resin!😅 and it's all over the place. If un-properly cured resin got in intake or something like that, even in small amounts it could destroy the engine
I'm not sure what oil was in the engine at the time of failure however I always use 5w40 in the S63 engine as climate here in Australia is pretty average (not too cold or too hot)
Thanks, I’m looking at a few options at the moment - may I ask if you’re referring to the echo in the videos or because you couldn’t hear me talking at some point ?
Is that plastic from a rebuild or from the factory? It probably what also clogged the oil pump. Irresponsible whoever had their hands on it the last time
The car had a bent rod which was causing a ticking noise and the other mechanics tried to fix by replacing the lifters and rockers. I’m guess they forgot something inside the engine because the bottom part was stock.
Hello, I rebuilt my engine on my g12 750li, but the gear shifter does not work ( no light is on), but the ignition gets on, but the engine still doesn't crank(like the car does not want to crank it ?). Are there any relais to check ? I dy replaced the negative wire at the rear axle(under the car). I have no clue what it could be. The car also almost completely emptied the battery when the ignition was on while I was looking for the errors (Gutmann Diagnostic)
@dnl35projects there is a cable with a round connector at the back of the transmission I think and one behind that that goes into a control Unit on the Transmission and they are plugged in
Its got to be plastic cover from the oil filter box or something. I cannt put a finger on it at all. And then rhe foreign material in the cylinder also plastic. What in the world. Everything is strange about this incident.

@@dnl35projects I appreciate the response:). I’m replacing my valvetronic and cannot see the bottom bolt hold it on. Only about 2” inches to work with. Any help would be highly appreciated:)
Another great video!
Thank you very much !
Hi mate ive got a 2012 M5 stage 2 MHD & XHP tunes car drives great has a very extensive service history and even had all 8 injectors replaced, for peace of mind and the fact i plan on keeping it a long time im looking at getting it rebuilt how much roughly would you charge for a rebuild on an s63tu without any major issues? Love the content by the way!
First of all, congratulations for thinking that way ! The best time to rebuild these engines is when they still run fine. With that in mind and considering your injectors have been replaced I'd say around $5k in parts (USD) plus labour which will vary depending on which country you are (another $5-10k) I'm about to put a video together about the costs and potential issues of the S63 and N63 rebuild
How has a lump of Plastic got down into the Oil pump ? Has it been put there?
8 months later and I’m still wondering the same thing 🤣 that shows how this cars require special attention (knowledge) and why you should never leave them at the local corner shop for repairs.
Something was left inside this engine from a prior repair. Debris couldn’t have been “sucked” in through the intake tract as it would get caught up on the intercoolers.
I Agree
Absolute champion. Love the video. I hope your trip overseas was good. Looks like a plastic bag was in his engine lol
Thanks !
Hi, it’s the video where I’m sharing the Timing chain issues on the N63 and S63 engines
Great video
Thanks!
Can u please do e60 m5 like that step by steps engine rebuild
LOL I hope not because I own one 🤣🤣🤣 jokes I’d love to do one as long as it’s not my car - I could actually do yours if you’re in Australia 🇦🇺
@@dnl35projects get dji mic they sound great
Hey man, what engine oil do you recommend to use in this engine? I just did my rod bearings
Very cool subd and great job thank you 👍
Awesome thank you!
Great stuff 👏
Thanks
how do you clean the oil pick up tube during oil change??
There are two pick up tubes on the oil pump - you can access the lower one if the lower sump is removed, you then simply unscrew the tube from the pump and clean it if needed - the Upper pickup tube cannot be seen or cleaned unless the bottom of the engine (upper pan) is disassembled.
Are you able to take my 2013 m5 and repair the engine? From what I know the rod bearings are going out and coolant is leaking into the engine oil
Hi, the best time to rebuild these engines is before it is seized 🤣 it’s a lot cheaper too ! Send us an email and I’ll be happy to help if you live nearby.
What was there in the pickup tube net anyway? That was not sludge
There was some sludge but also something that looks like the remains of a blastocyst bag of some sort
Very informative 👍🏻🔥
Thank you !
Why is the oil blocked easier in this engine than other engines? They all have oil-pickup’s?
The hole in the pick-up is way too small!
It’s not easier or harder, the pickup tube will block in any engine with that much of gunk and plastic in the oil.
so are you saying every oil change drop the pan and check the filter?
Absolutely NOT ! But if you just bought the car or had some major service (internal components) done recently, wouldn’t hurt spend $30 on a gasket and drop the pan during your next oil change.
잘봤습니다. 왜 저 이물질이 엔진 안으로 들어갔는지 이상하네요. 오일 세퍼레이터의 중요성.
감사합니다. 동영상이 마음에 드셨다니 다행입니다.
Does it cost a lot to maintain s63 engine especially in M6?
It will depend a lot on how the previous owner treated the car however these engine will still scream for a rebuild at around 150k kms - The gaskets, orings and seals will perish due to the high heat so if you are keeping the car for long it would be a good strategy to just spend it $$ all at once then enjoy a trouble free car
Let me know when you need the ecu flashed I can do this remotely and flash back to stock
Hi, please send me a DM with your contact info - you can find my email at the channel homepage
Are there 4 Vanos solenoids on the S63?
Yes, one solenoid to control each vanos (one per camshaft)
Is it possible that plastic is from one of the caps on the oil bottles, or the plastic film that covers the bottle hole?
It is a lot of plastic, and it’s intriguing cause I found in 3 different places: outside the engine, inside in timing guides & sump, also on top of a piston !
@@dnl35projectsunbeliable. Halloween 🧟
You should send that film off to be tested
Yes, whatever that was I hope not see it again 🤣
Might be some sort of stop leak
Thought of that
Hello Sir. Do you have the slowed down version of this video so i can use it for reference. Thank you.
Hi, unfortunately no. The only thing you have to be really careful when outing the engine apart is to loose the head bolts (from outside in) and to not mix the hydraulic lifters
Watching 12:41 I bet there's plastic in the oil collector, and that caused an oil starvation situation, leading to the seize
Service guy wouldn't forget to take the oil filter out of the plastic bag, wouldn't he?
You’re right - the plastic and other debtors caused the oil pickup tube to block.
I expect the workshop who did the oil-service is going to pay for everything?
I’d love to see that happening but unfortunately is a bit of a complicated scenario
Brother, what is the biggest difference between n63 and s63?
Hi, it depend a lot on the year model you have since the N63 on the M550i (after 2020) is pretty much the same engine as the S63. For the earlier models (N63 and N63TU the main difference when compared to the S63 would be the pistons (creating a different compression ratio) , exhaust manifolds, turbos, cams and the software the engine runs on.
Thank you and good luck always. I'll wait for the next video.
What kind of lift is that?
It’s a 3T scissor lift
The car ate the serpentine belt?
Hahaha - One of the mechanics removed the belt to try turning the engine 🤣
thank you
👍
Im not a mechanic but love doing small jobs om my Car but Can you Pls tell me how The hell do ypu remember where everything is going when you asemble The whole thing :)
That’s a fair question 🤣 well, I’m used to working on these cars but if it’s the first time you’re doing something I’d recommend you taking hundreds of photos, step-by-step and using small ziplock bags to organize/identify all bolts - When putting things back together you just go through the photos in reverse order - that kind of help figuring out what goes where 👍
How much wil this job cost if it happens to me?
Hi, it’s about $20k depending on what’s wrong with your engine
the plastic on top of the piston is what is driving me nuts,,,, it had to be placed in the intake and inside the engine at the same time,,,,so mostly sabotage
I’m thinking the same and actually hurts me not knowing exactly how it ended up there
형제님 n63 engine 과 s63 engine 의 가장큰 차이점은 무엇인가요?
Sorry ?
Man someone really fudged that one
Agree, its almost like it was done on purpose ... such a shame
That looks like plastic or some kind of epoxy resin!😅 and it's all over the place. If un-properly cured resin got in intake or something like that, even in small amounts it could destroy the engine
Yes very suspicious
Which oil engine used?
I'm not sure what oil was in the engine at the time of failure however I always use 5w40 in the S63 engine as climate here in Australia is pretty average (not too cold or too hot)
You could do with a Bluetooth lapel microphone ✅
Thanks, I’m looking at a few options at the moment - may I ask if you’re referring to the echo in the videos or because you couldn’t hear me talking at some point ?
Is that plastic from a rebuild or from the factory? It probably what also clogged the oil pump. Irresponsible whoever had their hands on it the last time
The car had a bent rod which was causing a ticking noise and the other mechanics tried to fix by replacing the lifters and rockers. I’m guess they forgot something inside the engine because the bottom part was stock.
Is taking the engine out hard to do?
It’s a big / timing consuming job however it isn’t something really hard specially if you have the correct tools.
Is the trasmission terminal plugged in ? (on the transmission side and the main plug on the wire/conection box)
@dnl35projects there is a cable with a round connector at the back of the transmission I think and one behind that that goes into a control Unit on the Transmission and they are plugged in
And the 2 control units that are on the right and on the left of the engine bay are also all connected with all cables
i had an f06 m6. i loved that car dearly but anytime i had to fix or replace anything in the engine ..curse it to hell
Hehehe not too much space but still, I’d say you are lucky if the engine doesn’t have to come out 😜
Whatever they (garage) replaced they forgot about plastic bag that part came in with😂
They were careless
Its got to be plastic cover from the oil filter box or something.
I cannt put a finger on it at all.
And then rhe foreign material in the cylinder also plastic.
What in the world.
Everything is strange about this incident.
Yes, unfortunately the car went through too many hands before I got it so it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what happened
👍
maybe the engine pulled in a plastic bag through the intake?
Yes that could be but how would it end up in the oil pickup tube ? That’s the misters 🧐
@@dnl35projects melted the plastic and went through the piston rings somehow is my guess.
My guess plastic is some kind of engine oil addative
Yes, it's been hard to find a plausible explanation :)
