- I take a look at the Taurus 692 revolver. It’s a 7 shot 357 magnum but also comes with a cylinder for 9mm. It’s got a ported barrel and adjustable sights.

I noticed the error between 6 and 7 shots. I'm used to shooting 5 round snubs so I always end up doing the math with a 7 round revolver wrong. In my case this was going from the Taurus 605 to the 627 Tracker.
Yah I almost made a comment to point this out and then decided to see who would find it first. If you notice I dropped out a round and only shot 6. I have no idea how I missed that in the moment or the dozens of times I went through it in editing…good grief. Sorry for the mistake!!
No need to apologize. Love your content! @@triggerbarPhD
@@ganth0rethanks my friend! Still I should have caught it!
I suspect I'd automatically stop at six too. Since I only shoot revolvers for fun now, and I don't have a UA-cam channel, I don't have a reason to try anything else. Hooray for metallurgy and technology, though, stretching the revolver out to seven and eight rounds.
A little heads up for you folks regarding these Taurus wheel guns, do not buy them from any online source, do not buy them absent a thorough inspection, making certain all screws are in place, and not loose, and that the cylinder slop (which all Taurus revolvers have in abundance) is kept to the minimum, and especially pay close attention to the triggers travel, as in make certain its NOT slamming into the trigger guard when pulled!!! My 692 did this, and Taurus tried to tell me such was fine, its not fine, its metal slamming into metal, one a piece of MIM steel, the other forged steel, and sooner or later, the trigger will fracture on you!
Indeed after they told me it was in spec, I returned to gun shop and after demonstrating the defect for the gun smith , we then proceeded to inspect every Taurus revolver he had new and for sale, six of them, two 605's, two 856's and a pair of 627 Trackers, three of the wheel guns were fine, and three had exactly the same defect I had, the trigger slamming into the back of the trigger guard on completion of the pull! That is a 50% defect rate on that little issue alone, likely meaning nationwide that half or so of all of their wheel guns are defective right from the box!
Dang that’s awful, thanks for sharing this!!!
Interesting, I'll have to check this out and save this information before any consideration of purchasing, 👍, thanks.
I bought my 692 during the shutdown in 2020 and have put so many different rounds through it. There’s also something I’ve experimented with shooting 357 mag .38 special and.38 Super +P in the 357 cylinder and 9mm and .380acp in the second cylinder. This gun is so versatile and has never given me any issues I have the 6.5 inch barrel and automatically swapped out the pistol grips with hogue grips
Gotta love hogue grips
I’m no longer a Revolver guy haven’t been in 35 years, but I really like this one a lot and I just might buy one.
Taurus did a great job on this one and it really handles all these loads well.
This revolver is out of stock everywhere. Hopefully they increase production.
That’s frustrating. I got mine the first week of Covid before they all disappeared. It’s been a popular one for them I do t know why they don’t make more!
This would be a handy revolver to have.
I really like it! Thanks for watching!!
Perfect for preppers.
What a deeply interesting revolver this one. Seems very versatile and decently compact for what it is. Great video!
Very much so! And thank-you! I really appreciate that!
Love the review. Brought me down memory lane. I belonged to that club for a minute in PA before I moved. My son and learned to shoot with a .357 on that range.
That’s great! It really is a great range! I’ve only been in the area for a year but really like it!
What range is this? Looks like Lower Providence R&G in Oaks, PA
@@DiggyDog917 it is!
Wasn't expecting to see my gun club when I clicked on your review! I have been a member of Lower Providence since 1983. Anyway, I recently inherited a 692, so I checked your presentation out. Good overview. Yes, the factory moon clips seem flimsy. I will have to check out the TK Customs. Gonna check out your channel. Thanks.
Ha! Awesome!! I just moved here about 2 years ago so I’ve only been a member for two years. It’s a great range. The other range in my videos is the University Rifle Club up near Reading. Thanks for commenting and I hope to see you there sometime!
Awesome! That is a fun versatile gun!
Thanks my friend!!
@@triggerbarPhD I appreciated the back story on why you got it. I think that was a big step up from the judge
@@publicdefender77 thanks! Yes I have no regrets in not getting a judge.
I have one just like this one! Super rare and really a joy to shoot. I love the ported barrel.
Thanks!
Looks like a great gun. I'm definitely going to pick one up.
It really is a sweet gun!
That is awesome and I like how you can also shoot 9mm, great video and I hope you have an awesome weekend.
Thanks my friend!! Hope you have a great one too!!
they could produce with a combat sights...making it a perfect revolver hg.
Great point.
.357MAG, .38SP, .38SP +P, 9mm....four!!👌👍
Enjoyed the video. I had considered a Tracker 44/Smith M69 at one time, but decided to go the 10mm route.
Just a thought, consider getting 38/357 dies and load fun 38 spec. range ammo. I've shot a really decent bunch of lighter wadcutter loads, super accurate, super fun. Anyway, the rim might really bump up the reliability and convenience. Can do the same with .357 brass, but then have to fiddle with the seater.
I really like my revolvers, shoot them regularly, thanks again.
Definitely will check that out!! Thanks for advice!
I just watched a video where they used a chronograph on the same same gun. The velocities ranged from a little over 750 for 38, about 950 for the 9mm and north of 1200 for the 357. You seem to have too high expectations for your groupings. That is a wide range and without zeroing each caliber your groupings were DAMN GOOD. I have a Ruger 357/38/9mm Blackhawk with a 6.5" barrel.....I wish I could consistently shoot that well....Every single shot would have been a deadly head shot....every shot would have been DEAD center mass! Nice shooting. The Taurus was my first choice BUT living in California it is not on their approved handgun roster 😞😞😞
That’s great info on the chrono graph, thanks SLF or sharing! I plan to do one on my lab radar, I’ll keep this in mind. Also thank-you for that, makes sense on the variations and actually is really good considering that data! So frustrating this didn’t on their list!
Yeah ostensibly it is a "safe" handgun list. What it actually is an infringement on our 2A rights. If it is about safety I am still waiting for someone to explain to me how a modern double action revolver with a transfer bar is not as safe as a handgun can be. What it actually is an infringement on our 2A rights. To have a gun added to the list a manufacturer must pay over 100K AND remove 2 existing models from the list! At the moment I believe there is just over 400 models of handguns on the list. This is why we cant get a Gen 4 or 5 Glock. Glock is a great example. I have a black Glock 17 Gen 3, If you wanted that gun in Tan well sorry it is not on the list because the model number is slightly different than the black version which is on the list. So according to Kalifornia a black Glock 17 Gen 3 is safe BUT a tan Glock 17 Gen 3 is NOT safe! How the hell has this not be challenged in court and overturned? Sorry for the rant but gawd I hate this state. @@triggerbarPhD
@michaelfreeze1791 I couldn’t agree more with you!!!! That’s crazy how they use it to remove allowable hand guns. How is this not unconstitutional!?!? Tyrants…
Looks like a fun lil gun!
Hey thanks Brad! Hope you are doing well!!
as well as can be expected I guess, lol got all my loads set for second test trials on the Berger 184s outta the 7mm saum for this weekend. I expect to see some even smaller bug-holes with at least a couple of them.@@triggerbarPhD
357 Rat shot should work well on snakes. But the effective is going to be measured in feet not yards. The rifling tends to open the pattern fairly quickly. I bought my 6" Taurus 689 about 30 years ago and it's still my favorite revolver. It travels with my Marlin 1894c. I've been looking at picking up a 692. But right now, we're getting ready to retire, so I'll probably wait until then. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for adding that and your experience. When I patterned my rat shot, yes it’s 3-5 feet of effective range 😂. Thanks again and congrats on retirement!!
@@triggerbarPhD Merry Christmas to you and your.
@@douglasmcneil8413 Merry Christmas to you as well!!
AWESOME! I've done more vids with this than anyone else and have a lot more I have already filmed. Recent one was POI Accuracy w .357/9mm/.38! I run a lot of realistic multiple attacker drills with it too. Is that just a standard large frame tracker judge Grip?
On the grip, I'm not sure. I don't believe it was anything special. It's a hogue grip and I don't remember any issues in matching it. I like it better than the taurus standard grip.
They now make 380 moon clips for this gun. The 9mm moon clips will also alow for 38 smith and wesson, 9mm mak and 38 super
Okay, wow. That is freaking cool and I did not know that but will be picking up some ammo to test this!!!
Pretty 9mm Makarov is a larger caliber.
Quadruple threat. You can get 380 moonclips for it.
Yes, I have a new video out talking about that AND I shot 38 super through it, so 5 rounds?!?
At the top of my wish list. I want it for a trail gun. Like that it's 7 shot and 3". Also the multi caliber capability. However I have some reservations about relying on 9mm in a revolver. I have an LCR in 9mm, probably have put 400 rounds through it and had one malfunction, jam, stuck cylinder rotation due to one of the projectiles vibrating out off the casing. A very rare thing, so I read, but it can happen. Ok for practice, but would stick with 357 on the trail.
Yah, for trail protection, why not right? 357 mag is so much more powerful. But you can train with the 9mm and save some money!! It’s been a great gun for me!
Looking in my Lee reloading manual. The difference between 9mm 124 gr and 38 special 125 gr is only 14 fps with both shooting XTP bullets the edge going to 9mm with the lighter bullet.
Not much difference at those levels!!
I really do like this model. I have a bunch of 9mm so if i couldn't find 38/357.. I still have a gun that wouldn't be a door stop.
Exactly. Extremely versatile! I have a newer video out now where I also shoot 38 super and I’ve found these also shoot 380 auto with moon clips from TK Customs!!
Since the 9mm has a smaller slug compared to 357 and 38 special, will it not destroy the barrel grooves since it will floating in the barrel rather that rotating within the grooves?
I believe it’s still in contact with the grooves I don’t believe the size difference is enough to make it float. Also I would also think that would impact accuracy but it doesn’t appear to do that either. But it’s a good question and should be explored!!
Add 380acp in the 9mm cylinder and its a 4 cal gun
Yes thanks for that! I wasn’t aware of that but have since done one other video showing that with another one on the way. I’ve had mixed results. Some rounds work and some don’t 🤷♂️
Looks like a good gun.
Thanks! It really has done well for me!!
@@triggerbarPhD I wonder how 38 super would work?
@@billm2078 That's a great question. I wouldn't have known anything about that but I did see the Paul Harrel video on 38 super in 357 mag guns a while back!! I'd probably still want to try it in my 357 mag cylinder though I bet they might fit in the 9mm one. I just would be worried about pressures with the 9mm cylinder...
1:29 if the cilynder properly made for 9 mm cartridge, it will not drop through even without moonclip:).
Thanks for that correction! And I’ve also since tested it.
I have been shopping for this model gun for a while. Everywhere I have looked it is on back order. Did something happen with manufacturing?
I got mine the month Covid hit. For a while, I would never see one. It’s seems they pop up every now and then but I do t regularly see them anywhere but I’ve had people report about just picking one up since I posted this video…
I have the 61/2 in model I love the versatility with multi caliber options
It really opens up a lot you can do with them!!
Quadruple threat if you're recoil sense friends need to use it with some .380ACP. I am pretty sure TK Custom sells the moon clips.
At the time of this filming, I didn't realize that. I had the TK custom moon clips for 380 in my cart last night (I'm spending waaaay too much money lately). I'm going to trying some other rounds here soon with this revolver!!
Is there a difference between this one and the 627 tracker that is exactly the same?
I’m not an expert on this but it looks to me like they don’t sell one with an interchangeable 38spl/357mag-9mm cylinders and the cylinders are fluted on the 627. Just checking the Taurus website they list an interchangeable barrel as an option to select on the model but they say that configuration isn’t available-so I read that as they don’t offer that for the 627. Hope that helps!
TheFireArmGuy video shows him shooting 9mm with AND without the moon clips.
Interesting. And they didn’t fall through? I’m gonna have to check it out! Thank-you!!
Funny enough I watched that video before I bought mine 3.5 years ago. I’d forgotten about that but also now I remembered why I didn’t use it that way, is it is a little bit of pain getting them out but I had forgotton…
I would like to know how the gun will hold up over time, firing the 9mm. Most videos I see people just try it out for a few rounds, which make sense, but I wonder how it will work over time.
As the 9mm cartridge is shorter and the bullet is ever so slightly smaller than the barrel, I wonder how that will affect the gun over time. Both in terms of cleaning as well as wear and tear.
It seems that the slightly too wide barrel doesn't affect accuracy, right?
I am very interested in these "convertible" revolvers as they are so versatile, but I just want to make sure it isn't a mistake in the long run.
That’s a great question and I don’t have tons of rounds through mine either, especially with the 9mm side. Most of my shooting has been 38 spl and 357 mag. I plan to change that but don’t think it will be materially more (thousands of rounds). Accuracy seems pretty good with the 9mm, not worse than 38 or 357 at least.
@@triggerbarPhD Hopefully some owner out there can share their experience after a few thousand 9mm.
It is the only question I have about these type of guns (I see Ruger has a convertible as well and probably others), as it seems like a brilliant idea on paper to have the ability to shoot 9mm.
@@Antares2 totally agree
You fired 6 rounds, 6 rounds hit the target but you counted 7. 😂😂
hahhaha, lol that's it!
How did you count 7 impacts when there were obviously only 6 holes? Jeezus
I couldn’t figure out what I was talking about even in editing!!
Wow , it doesn't suck shooting the 9mm , lol . I had watched people shooting this revolver in the past and 9mm was going wildly off target , kinda like a sabot being shot out of a smooth bore or like shooting the 6.5 Carcano with modern ammo ( that Italian round is actually like 6.8mm[0.268"] whilst 6.5mm ammo today is 0.264" so an 0.04" difference between the Italian and American 6.5s ) . So the reason they claimed the 9mm was going so wildly is due to the 9mm being 0.02" smaller but I'll have to watch more videos to see if maybe someone got bad guns .
Interesting. I have not seen that with mine (including off camera). I saw some variation in my next video on this gun but that was shooting 38 super (not a typo). But I saw that with the velocities being all over versus accuracy testing.
@@triggerbarPhD Is the 38 super a variation of the +p ?
@@Airon79 all 38 super is “+p”, so yes.
I have to get one. I assume +p+ and possibly 9mm major would be no problem.
Also, would be nice if the 960 Rowland would fit.
I didn’t see anything in the manual against +p+ or major but I have to believe the gun is made to handle 357 mag it will handle those. Don’t know about 960 Rowland! I guess the question is what spec is the cylinder built to. I don’t know the answer to that…
@triggerbarPhD That was my thinking. Plus, the cartridge brass is always supported by the chamber unlike an auto.
This could be one very versatile gun. I'd like to see if the cylinder is built to headspave on the case mouth. If not, 9x21, 9mm win mag and several others could be a possibility.
@@timt8029 very intriguing!!
@triggerbarPhD I checked one out in person and the cylinders are built to headspace on the rim of 9x19.
pls give your price taurus 692 ok sir thank you again.
Well I bought it in March of 2020 for $650
Answering at your live chat, I don't think you will see me shooting, at least no in this account, I may make another one for that
Hahaha I get that. But hopefully you let some of us know which account that is so we can follow you!!
Have one of these fine revolvers and quickly learned that messing with moon clips using just fingers ain't gonna work. So, searching around for the solution found this fine tool specifically the BMT MOONER T9-7. Makes loading and unloading the clips super easy. The vid uses larger caliber but shows the features:
ua-cam.com/video/mS8VjUbOEdM/v-deo.html
This. Those tools make all the difference!!!
Ported barrel ????
And they don’t produce enough of them
Yes, these are hard to find!
The non-Ported 692 has a 2.5 inch barrel
@@MrBuckeye63 thanks- I did not know that!!
Looks more like sun clips! 😀
😂🤣
Can you shoot 38+p out of this
Yes for sure. You’d shoot it out of the same cylinder that is rated for 357 mag so it can more than handle that pressure. And I have shot it out of the gun and it handles it fine.
Ok thx
What about license registration of the gun?..
I assume you are asking which caliber to register it as? I don’t live in a state or country where that is a requirement so I can’t answer that. If you just have the 357/38 special cylinder then I’d say 357 mag. In fact that’s what I’d probably put down on it registration if I had to register it. They are all .357” caliber bullets they just go by different names…
Can all 9mm revolvers shoot 380
I don’t believe so. I dont think any can but maybe I’m wrong.
He needs to learn how to count
Thanks!
6 rounds, not 7, I went back and watched again
7
That's SIX rounds! NOT SEVEN!
Yah bad counting, good catch!
I wouldn't trust you with a BB gun!!!
Fair enough!
