      I tried several programs trying to convert a spanned GPT dynamic virtual disk (across 2 drives a sing WD Blue 1 TB 3.5 in. and a 500 GB 3.5 in. seagate barracuda) to another drive (WD RED 3 TB 3.5 in) into a simple GPT disk with no success and it seems this software was unable to solve my issue either (I have several hundreds of dollars of data I need to get this data off of and no subscription based software has solved this issue if anyone knows of something please let me know) I have 3 months before I absolutely need the data in the format mentioned above on the aforementioned drive....

    the only thing worries me are:
    - does it copy the registry completely?
    - does it copies the software I already installed such as files in the program files/program files (x86)?
    - How 'bout files in users folder?
    OMG, hope I get an answer who tried this before, I just ordered an nvme SSD.

    Perfect!!! I just used this video to instruct a 70 year old gamer friend of mine, how to clone his Modern Warfare drive on to a spare hard drive we are gonna put in the drawer for when we upgrade his CPU to the I7, install all the drivers and re-authorize windows, we can copy the 140 gig game right back on to the new 500 gig ssd he bought.(otherwise, he will be re-downloading it for days without backing up) Great video!!

    This was a very good look at cloning 2 disks. I've been using Acronis (now Acronis 2018 Pro) for some time and haven't had any bad copies yet. I purchased a Thermaltake "BLAC X Duet" dual hard drive docking station (not hot swappable, I know I tried it once) that enables me to connect two additional drives to my system via a 3.0 SS cable. I've been able to clone multiple drives this way and while it's not the fastest connection method, It doesn't require that I install the drives into any system either. I had a new HP Envy system that came with a 120Gb SSD and I upgraded it to a 256gb SSD and eventually upgraded that to a Samsung 512 gb EVO 850 Pro without any problems using the Acronis software. This PC only had two drive bays, which required that I use the external drive method as I had loaded Acronis onto my 4.0 Tb second drive where the majority of my Windows apps are installed. In short; it works great!

    Great video but what if you are trying to clone your OS from a 1TB or larger HDD to a smaller SSD. Can you do a detailed video of that process showing what folders to keep and what to clone.

    • @wanderingbrewer3430
      @wanderingbrewer3430 5 років тому

      Cyber Dustin you need to resize your partition down to a smaller volume before you clone it. Give yourself some slack space to be safe, just don’t go too small, you can always resize your partition to its full capacity after the clone.

  • @Forflies
    @Forflies 9 років тому +29

    So what these softwares will do is clone everything from one partition of a drive to another without deleting anything. And when I have my OS on the target drive all I do is set the target drive as the main boot device in my BIOS?

      so i have my windows 10 on a 1tb HDD, and i recently got a 275gb SSD. so if i copy my windows 10 from HDD to SSD using acronis, how do i know that the computer will run or boot everytime from the SSD and not the HDD? i am asking since you said that cloning is just the copy of the drive.. so that means that both my HDD and SSD will have the windows 10 OS?

    who wouldve thought capacities would be so much higher in only a few years.. I have two 1TB 860 evo's, 3x 1tb 970 evo nvme ssd's, 2x 1tb hdd's, and 2x 500gb hdd's
    the days of installing one or two storage drives are over. nowadays storage is so inexpensive you can have a seperate drive for each category of data. That way if anything goes wrong you CANT lose all your data off the dead drive or the virus ridden drive. All your important stuff is saved no matter what. I definitely dont miss these low capacity drive days. i still remember my first 5GB HDD. i thought it was HUGE capacity. Back then i never wouldve thought id be installing 80GB single games though and have an 800GB music library or a 2TB movie library. 5GB worked for the level of computing being done in those days. Still fun to look back in time at these old videos though.

    Sorry but Im kinda new to this idea Jay,
    If I clone a main drive SSD to another SSD, and plug it in as my new main drive again, will it run instantly? Do I have to do some licensing procedures about the OS? and also the old SSD, if I plug it in to a different computer, will it also run immediately? or will it ask for license or something? if I update both OS of the computers with the same clone SSD's what would happen, does it ask for another license or something?

Things a bit complicated when you try and update to NVME drives. There new are drivers that sometimes needs to be sideloaded into Acronis and I most likely create an image instead cloning.

      From what I've researched, you have to take the whole thing. It's an image of the system.
      There doesn't seem to be any disadvantage to just reinstalling the OS on a new drive, though, if you just want the OS.

    • @LimitzVFX
      @LimitzVFX 9 років тому

      there's no point on a non game video. Just more space needed to render and longer times for uploading. upload might not be a issue in Jayz's situation, but in aus only like 20% of the population have optic fibre to the node, and adsl 2+ isn't good enough.

    I recently picked up a Crucial 512 GB MX100 SSD. My computer was blocking the download of Acronis for some reason, so I decided to use Macrium Reflect. Macrium Reflect turned my 512 GB SSD into a 128 GB SSD, since it pretty much copied the partitions of my old SSD. I had to use my Windows 7 disk to repair the partition problems that MR created on my new SSD. I ended up using another PC to download Acronis onto a thumb-drive and used that program to perform an easy transfer over to my new SSD.
    I'd thought that everything was going great with the transition to my new SSD, but I encountered a trojan that I'd constantly delete using ad-aware. The Trojan pretty much kept opening a DLL service that was trying to reach a site for updates. I finally figured it out, it was Acronis that was causing the issue. I highly recommend that you remove the software, once you have imaged your SSD/HDD to your new SSD.

    Hope you updated your 840 Evo firmware prior to the transfer! Samsung had an "old" data (>30 days old) read time slowdown issue that required a total drive refresh be done. You're in I.T. so you probably knew this, but I looked through a bunch of the comments and didn't see this mentioned by anyone, so...
    If you already heard this/knew this, please disregard. If not, the fix is on their website.

    Use a live Linux distro and pipe the output of dd into gzip! I do this with frequent backups, and since I only have one slot for a 2.5" drive in my setup, I use an external USB 3.0 disk to save the drive image.
    I've migrated a Windows installation from a 500 GB 7200rpm hard drive to a 256 GB solid state drive. All you have to do in this case is ensure that all the data is at the beginning of your drive (by defragging it) and specifying the block size and count in the DD command. (This only works if all your data will fit on the target drive, and that you don't have any fragments near the end of the drive!)

    I'm thinking you should do video on how to setup on old computer as a file share server on an isolated domain from the rest of the network. That can be of great help to people who have multiple computers (or wanting to build a HTPC) and want to easily share files with each other without having to use a service on the internet or without worry of specific operating system (Mac OSX, Windows, Linux Flavors, and if at all possible, Mobile OS's).

    My comment would be: If you have a RAID 0 setup for your OS, you will have to perform an ISO backup, then a restore to the new RAID set of disks. You'll have to have a separate disk for holding the ISO backup. FYI... just my 2 cents.

    When i was migrating from my kingston 240gb to my new Samsung 500gb 840 EVO. I first tried the Samsung migrating software,and i have never seen a more useless program (please don't use it folks). I did a fair bit of research and eventually came over a software that's called EaseUS Todo Backup and it's completely free (there is a paid version as well,but there is no reason to go with that). It cloned my drive without any issues, and even if you don't have formated your drive before cloning it. It will automatically do it for you in the process. Iv'e used it now to clone and backup several drives without a single issue. And it's now my go to software for cloning and backup. I will strongly recommend it to everyone,it's really easy to use (even if you don't have a clue about what to do). And it's just as good for professionals as "noobs". And the amount of features it has for the free version i would give it a 8/10. So far i haven't heard a negative thing about the software. And i tried about 6 different programs before i found this gem. And it even saved my data from my 2tb usb drive after I plugged it in,and you get that annoying: You need to format this drive "bug" even though it worked perfectly fine the last time my disk was plugged in. All i can say is, try it out guys it's free so it's not like you have anything to loose by trying it.

      I think just as the tutorial explains. Just make sure you whittle down what's on the old drive so that it fits on the new drive. Unless you're shooting for a little more exotic like the SSD as an additional drive being used to augment (perhaps to boot from, for faster response).

    Actually, Dr. Jay, if you use MiniTool Partition Wizard, disk migration is a snap. You can download their bootable manager which I did and loaded it to a USB drive using Rufus. Easy Breezey. And, yes, I bought Minitool because I liked it so much and it was really easy. No BS to contend with. Rufus is a bit tricky as to how to set up the boot create but once you see what to do is also easy.
