Unimatic Washer Mechanism Problem

  • Although rare I have seen this problem in 2 or 3 different mechanism over the years. The agitator is not suppose to be going up and down during spin acceleration. Not a major issue, but not how the machine is suppose to operate either. After a discussion with another collector we've suspect the problem may be weak brake plates or break plate springs. What may be happening is drive plate is slipping between the two brake linings causing the drive plate to rotate faster than the brake (and tub) transmitting the extra rpms to the pulsator drive. I plan on pulling the transmission and experimenting to see if I can solve this unusual problem. Nothing is ever mentioned about this issue that I can find in any of the Frigidaire service manuals over the years.

Vintage washers with a problem: I have a problem but I’ll still work just fine.
Modern washers when they have a problem:
    ERROR

My Panasonic Inverter NA-FD85X1 doesn't have a problem. It's China's fu**ing fault for errors on modern washing machines.

Robert, I've never seen a unimatic do that before but if anyone can figure out the problem it's you. When did it start doing this? I know this is one of your favorite machines. Keep us posted.

One-way bearing on the inside of the transmission needs replacing. If it agitates while spinning, not all of the torque is being transmitted to the tub, causing a lower spin speed.

Thanks Calvin, but no there are no one way bearings in the Unimatic transmission. Turned out it was an electrical problem rapidly cutting power on and off to the motor. All fixed now.

That's how it is on newer WCI Frigidaires. Sorry for the confusion!

This reminds me of my old hoover 820. It started to have a problem where it would agitate for a few seccons when it went into spin (neutral drain)
Those machines had a weird looking blackstone transmission.

Amazing washer still even with the developed little glitch. I’m sure you’ll try to cure the old girl. Can’t beat them. 👍🏻

this changes my belief on how this machine works; i used to think the motor spins at the same speed as spin when pulsating. how i know that is because the agitator moves up and down slowly while the tub is slowing down after a spin cycle

      @automaticwasher  10 місяців тому +4

No you're original assumption was correct, it is a one speed motor that operates at 1140rpm only.

What year is this washer from? I have a miniature version of the agitator in this machine that Frigidaire used as advertising for them and I was wondering what year it would be from

This machine is from 1958, model WCI-58 (WCI = Washer Custom Imperial). Frigidaire made made this style of agitator for 5 model years 1958 thru 1962.

@@automaticwasher I'd like to see the 1947 one in action if you may... with an empty tub or a small load. I'd like to see both the bottom of the tub and the laundry in it, if that's how one puts it...
I'd like to own a 1947 unimatic too ha ha... and every other unimatic and pulsamatic to be honest!

@@CBF1 I'll get to it at some point, however the next filming project on my list is going to the 1947 General Electric Automatic Washer, the very first GE Automatic. Although extremely busy at work right now so all filming is going to have to wait until I get some free time. Making these videos (properly) is very time consuming.

@@automaticwasher Well darn, UA-cam stupidly deleted my previous reply just now... what I was saying is I totally respect that you're busy.
I have also seen the videos of your GE on the automaticwasher website(YT won't let me post .org in any comments). It totally is a fine washer and I would be honoured to see your collection in person, especially the Unimatics and Pulsamatics, I personally think they are some of the finest looking american washers ever made.
I wanna own Unimatics too especially the 1947-1948 ones. It's a shame those ones are so rare...
