  • How the local news documented the resignation of Newcastle United manager Jack Charlton a couple of days after a pre season draw at home to Sheffield United on August 10th.
A few hundred supporters heckled the manager, a man who may have done good deeds in recognition of the Miner's Strike but ultimately refused to spend money on players as well as changing Arthur Cox's entertaining style of football into long ball nonsence.

Jack Charlton was never going to be a good fit at Newcastle. At least he didn't turn his back on the area like his brother Bobby.

+gallowgate68 is football was awful. bar the opening 3 games and beating the mackems, that season was pretty poor.

He got told off by his cousin Jackie Milburn, though.

The signs were there to see Bruce Rioch. Terrible 'target men' football, played Waddle and Beardsley as wingers (when they were a great forward pair), paid George Reilly more than he offered Chris Waddle in a contract renewal and bought in journeymen such as Gary Megson! He was never gonna last coming out with that in the video though....a massive exaggeration on his part and essentially slagging the support.

"Doesn't believe in star players". Hmm, that would explain why he got the best out of Paul McGrath on many an occasion and helped a certain Paul Gascoigne invaluably in his early days. No, I don't believe he was a "tactical genius", and was better with some stars than others (for every McGrath, there's a Brady and for every Moran, there's an O'Leary) but he was quite the man manager and no one can deny him his success. People are still talking about Boro's class of 1973-74, more fondly than the Carling Cup winners of thirty years later.

Didn't Charlton slap Beardsley on the pitch in front of supporters after he scored a last minute goal?

Did alright in his next job though, but. Newcastle maybe should have trusted him a bit and given him a few years to build something...oh yeah, this is Newcastle we're talking about isn't it ! ;)

Alright? He brought a broken national side that hadn’t been in a World Cup ever to a quarter finals and 8th in the world rankings
