It’s so beautiful! Sometimes a client will ask for lavender but sadly it doesn’t survive our Canadian winters so I always suggest Russian Sage as an alternative. Smells really nice too!
I have one that I literally haven't watered in 10 years and it blooms amazingly every year in the 100 degree temperatures. I need to grow way more of them.
I had no problem in growing more of them. Planted 4 or 5 about 20 years ago. They have spread to 50 x 15 feet. Bees love them as much as I do. The more you ignore them the better they look.
I have fallen in love with this plant. I bought 2 this year for my upstate lake home and once I saw that this sucker is virtually maintenance free with such a long bloom season I was HOOKED. I ended up buying 12 more to totally take over the side rock garden. It’s going to be stunning!
I went and bought 4 of these exact plants..Got them surrounding my pond that I have in the rock garden..I think I will buy 6 more to put along one of the walkways leading into our garage..Their gorgeous..And so is yours!!
Deers never touched my Russian Sages. Great plant for hot, humid, clay soil Central Texas. They do well in cold weather also. I planted 8 in a row and they are on their second season, looking healthy and strong. Great video, thank you 🙏
Good! I have clay soil AND deer here in upstate NY. I discovered this plant accidentally this year and after buying 2 in the spring I bought 12 more this fall!
You have certainly convinced me to go and buy a plant sir! My garden is really a builder's stone heap so, as I have a combination of limited mobility and laziness and a love of bees and butterflies topped with your youthful enthusiasm for the plant and bees, it seems ideal! Blessings and peace from UK
I one on each side of my front porch last year and a year later they are thriving. This summer I planted a dozen more around the yard to fill in some spots. The bees are loving them and all the sedums they are mingled with.
Thank you for this video! Just planted my first Russian sage outside. Now going to look to see if you've made a video on lavender. I planted two outside last year and one survived the winter here in the suburbs of Chicago but the other only halfway did. I'm wondering what I should do to prepare them for winter. 😬
Oh help! Your Russian Sage is beautiful but mine not so much! I live in northern Portugal now and last spring I bought a new plant. It grew..and grew, but never flowered! Not even one tiny bud. I haven’t cut it down as yet but any day now! Can you help me re the no flowers? I had no problems with Russian Sage in Scotland... I was so happy expecting to see masses of flowers and bees last year! If you could give me some advice I’d be so happy! Thank you! ❣️❤️❣️
ahhh wow, my gut says it must be due to the lack of cold winter temperatures to induce budding. but im not seeing any research on the topic. was it in full hot sun?
@@plantvibrations 😂 believe me, we get cold here in the north in winter! That being said I planted last spring...so I don’t really know where it was grown and potted up before I bought it! We’ve had an unusually wetter than normal winter and some really cold temps at night too...hovering around 7°C and even down to -6°C on half a dozen or so occasions! So, I will cut it back, not feed it, not water much in summer...and pray! Does that sound about right? Thanks for your speedy reply btw!
Hi! it is an awesome plant, but one of the requirements for such robust growth is a period of cool weather. so unfortunately i don't think it would grow in the philippines. but if you can find one, then its definitely worth a try.
I'm in PA too! How did your RS so bushy? Mine grows taller rather than bushy. If I deadhead mine when it blooms will it keep blooming throughout the summer? TY
It could be bc we had planted Little Spires which tends to be shorter and bushier. and yeah you can deadhead the flowers that turn brown and depending on the time of summer they could produce new flowers
@@plantvibrations have another question with Russian sage we just planted two Russian sages from pots very pale in color is there any way to bring back the color?
Love Russian sage but my dilemma is everything I plant in my clay soil just dies. I’m about to give up. Any tips? I’ve tried amending the soil and nothing
@@plantvibrations I’m obviously doing something wrong and I’m about to give up and call in the pros. I’ve even planted feather grass and it still dies 😩
KJ - I live on a former lake, so there is nothing but compressed clay to work with... Here is what I have learned about clay -- It is slow to take up water when dry, but when it eventually takes up water, it will hold on to it and will take a long time to drain the water deeper.... So, what I believe you have is poor or very little drainage in your soil... I always dig at least 3 feet deep, 3 feet wide, and take all the clay out, cut it up into tiny pieces with a sharpened square blade garden shovel, then amend those tiny pieces with a LOT of compost, gypsum, etc., to help keep the clay pieces from re-binding themselves again, add some plant food, and then put the plants into the ground... When they get watered, if the soil is now correctly prepared, any extra or too much water can drain way down there, 3 feet deep, and eventually, it will continue to drain deeper, but the plant is not going to get near that depth for a few years... So, your plants have a long time to grow really strong roots, that can go down, sideways, etc., and be able to handle the clay soil deeper than the 3 feet, and not ever have problems from overwatering and drowning the roots, in soil that does not drain well... Have planted almost 100 plants, trees, etc., in this clay former lake bed, and all of them have grown incredibly big and happy.... All around me others who have done nothing to improve their soil have these miniature plants, trees, that are barely surviving the soil, and first, lack of water, and then too much water and no fast drainage... Good luck with your project ! Fran Danco
hi joannas, they are much different. while both members of the Lamiaceae family, Russian Sage is Perovskia while various species of Salvia hail from the Salvia genus. their growing conditions are quite similar but their growth habit is much different
i just did a quick search on making tea with Russian Sage, amazing!! i wasn't aware. thank you so much for sharing. i feel like i need to spend a lifetime learning the medicinal qualities of all the plants around me.

they are so awesome and low maintenance. just make sure to give them a good cutting back in early spring or they can get leggy
They are very easy to propagate. You never have to buy more.

Not my case, here It died because of too much rain, I think It needs good drainage
I have this same plant/bush. The bees love it ❤️

awesome!!! im glad i helped convince you to try this fantastic plant
Very informative, Thank you for your motivation about this plant and the bees and sharing your knowledge.
Happy to help
The plant loves that spot... it looks amazing!!!
It does!
I just got my first Russian sage , I found your video and I subbed great gorgeous sage!🌱🌿☀️🐝
thank you! it is such a lovely plant, glad you added it in
I'm from the UK and planted 6 of these a couple of months ago. Never seen your videos before but thought this was really good mate 👍
Sweet! You’ll love them! Thanks for watching
Never heard of this plant thanks for sharing , sure is a nice looking plant, great that it will grow in the high heat and rocky areas!👍👌🌱🌻
Was lucky enough to have two happy healthy lavender sage plants at the house I bought.
Your plant is so beautiful.
thank you!

Lucy do you know what kind of lavender it is? Some are hardy others are not. Let them be until early spring and cut them back to about 3” then
@@plantvibrations Thank you! They're English Lavender.

my favorite and the smell!
so earthy!

It is a stunning plant. Sadly it died a death in our heavy clay soil... I am not surprised it does so well for you in gravel!
It is not growing entirely in gravel, it would not grow... The gravel, rocks, etc., are on the top of the soil...
Thank you for sharing. 🥰
thanks for watching!
Very informative thank you! What variety is it, just bought prime time, is it a good one?
This is Little Spires. Prime time looks to be a great variety
Its gorgeous 😊 Can russian sage bloom in the tropics? we dont have cold winter weather here in the Philippines.

They should start budding up about now for flower in the next month or so!

The Perpvskia Rusian Sage loves my soil that is pure sand. It does not do well with water/clay. It does prefer alkaline soil.
I did prune but not all the way to the ground
Hi so i live in Naperville and my Russian sage has grown back green and no flowers:(
If I plant starts this fall will it take a very long time to get them bigger like the in you are showing in this video?
no not at all, planting in fall is a great option. by next spring it'll get big, but by the second spring it'll be fully grown, which is normal
Vous dites qu’il fait 4 pieds de haut…😂 Même en position assise vous êtes à sa hauteur ! Alors je crois que ça fait maximum 3 pieds de haut.
It was still a juvenile plant in the video
But, is it a magnet for pollinators like our bees?
Absolutely
How many years did it take for it to get that large?
Two!
I can say that your video is pretty, but you are really handsome
Do I need to prune it to encourage more blooms ?
They may rebloom if you cut old flowers
No, it will make blooms on its own just fine... It needs a lot of sun every day to do the best...
Is it only one plant in your video or it is multiple plants?
It looks like one big plant...
how does that differ from purple sage...
hi joannas, they are much different. while both members of the Lamiaceae family, Russian Sage is Perovskia while various species of Salvia hail from the Salvia genus. their growing conditions are quite similar but their growth habit is much different
💚🌏💚 just got my first one
nice!! theyre stalwarts

And the best thing of all, deer hate it, and won’t touch it.
yes!! in my heavily deer populated garden it is a godsend!
Here it rains so much, so it died because of too much rain...it was in a pot
