  • Getting up from the floor is both a challenge and a fundamental skill for amputees! It’s something that must be practiced on a regular basis if you desire functional independence as a full-time double above-knee prosthetic user 😃
Getting up off the floor is a TOTAL BODY EXERCISE for double above-knee amputees!
You need strength these areas: upper body (to hold yourself up while you get your legs underneath), core (to keep everything safe and stable), and glutes (to help actually bring you from bent over to upright).
As always, if you need any help, drop questions or comments below!

My son is 10 and he's a bilateral above the knee amputee as well. He just got knees on his prosthesis and is now just doing therapy(to learn to to use them). This is how they're teaching him how to get up and done. He's getting discouraged because he says it's hard. So I'm trying to show him videos and ways to practice as much as he can while he's not doing therapy. It's really good and I'm REALLY GLAD that you said it is hard instead of him just thinking it's him. I'm trying to encourage him and show him that in time he will learn and he will be able to do all the things his friends are doing. It's really good to have someone that he can relate to and the struggles he's going through. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH THIS MEANT TO HIM BY JUST SHOWING AND SAYING WITH HARD WORK IT CAN BE DONE!!

Glad to hear it! It does require a good deal of upper body and core strength, but no time like when they’re young to ingrain that skill! Let me know if I can help.

I have a Disarticulated amputation of my right leg ,as a result of a car accident in 1990. I had to learn to use different methods to get up, when I fall. I didn't bother me as much 25 years ago. Today I'm more careful about foot placement. Still hurts to fall down though.

Can you just balance on your legs without moving and how did you learn that?

Takes a good deal of core and glute strength- keeping your hips/butt/belly muscles engaged
