One of the funniest commercials SNL has ever produced. Rest In Peace Phil Hartman.
Man... I didn’t even know he was sick...
He wasn’t. His wife shot and killed him years ago with their kids in the home.

Absolutely 💯
Rest in Piss Andy Dick
I remember watching this as a kid. Now I'm just amazed how they pulled off those visual effects!
I can explain to you how the CGI was done in the latest Hollywood blockbuster but have no idea how to explain this one.
Colon Blow'n you in the morning 😂
"Colon Blow, sounds delicious."
Always my favorite line from this mock commercial.
Shaaaaaaaaaarrrrrt!!!!!
It sounds like something that should be said sarcastically, but it doesn't seem like he said it that way.
Colon blow... I thought that's what you call it when you do a line off of a syphilitic hooker's butthole 🤔
At adult men's sauna
RIP Phil Hartman
I'm A Nice Guy he was so funny
👍👍👍💓💓💓💓
I'm A Nice Guy Yes, he is sorely missed... I just wish his Wife missed him
She shot him dead while high on Crack and heavily intoxicated.
Hartman was the life of many a party.
As I kid, I remember this had me laughing like crazy. I was like 12. Love Phil Hartman
Same here. I got special permission from my parents to stay up to watch SNL. Good times. :)
Libra Smith Late 80s, early 90s SNL was the best SNL.
Dalyan D. Haha. Yeahh, me too. And then at one time, I think the Saturday lineup was SNL, Conan O'Brien, and then Freddy's Nightmares..something like that.
Jim B. I know! All those guys and gals had movies or was featured in one. The stardom was insane. Remember when Chris Rock barely had any tv time?? Look at him now.
I remember it too I was probably 10 or so. I also remember asking my mom what abdominal distention was. Cuz that is how you had to learn obscure facts like that before we all had the internet in our pockets
You had to have seen this when it originally aired to really appreciate how funny this is. I remember those cereal commercials!
They nailed it with this one right down to the jingle. It was a strong competitor to the actual cereal commercials of its day.
Context absolutely matters.
Total and others of the time would famously say things like "it would take X bowls" to get the vitamins etc in 1 bowl of +their+ brand of cereal.
@@kitcoffey7194definitely those dang TOTAL commercials. And everyone I look at heathy cereal I think of this.
One bowl of that plus a gallon of prune juice, you'd be on the toilet for months. Seriously though, the parody makes more sense when you know what they're spoofing.
Total with 100 percent of your daily nutritional needs including fiber
😂
Not at all. There's only so much shite in one's system.
@@zombywoof1015 I think you mean there's only so much one's system can take.
whey protein powder pretty much does this to me now days. Damn lactose intolerance.
The song at the end is a masterstroke
I miss Phil Hartman. He and Farley died six or seven months apart and it was a major blow to people who loved their comedy. Phil's death in particular, because of how it happened, quite devastating. I wish he was still with us.
How did he die?
@@davidmarek535 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Hartman
@@davidmarek535 sadly shot by his wife while sleeping.
@@davidmarek535 His colon blew out.
@@davidmarek535 - look it up.
I like that subtle sound when he's at the top, of air blowing like he's on a mountain peak.
So glad to see this skit added to UA-cam. It's one of my all time favorites.
That random bowl of cereal that falls to the ground! 🤣
I'm Troy McClure, and you might remember me from Super Colon Blow! Phil :(
Amazing how Phil Hartman could make anything funny, just counting numbers...and 8 is my fav
He was the BEST Bill Clinton SNL ever had!
Finally letting his frustration show: "Nine."
@LeoS Comedy is subjective, old man.
@LeoS Imagine being you. *shivers*
he made the perfect "commercial 'straight-man' " for this setup...
For those wondering how they got the pyramid effect, it was worked on by Grant Imahara from Industrial Light and Magic, RIP Grant & Phil
Ok, so how did they get the pyramid effect?
got'em@@jedijones
You don't actually know.
@@sweiland75 i actually do know
I was going to say that was top level effects for the era. Not as easy as it might seem today.
I had to watch this again to get prepared mentally for my first colonoscopy lol
And now that box rests in the hands of Chum Lee
Yeah just saw the video
It’s an ad result when searching on the app
We are dying to know, What is in Colon Blow? Ask Chum from Pawn Stars, he might know.
Ohh yeahh VIVA MÉXICO
Rick's actually
I to this day still call all high fiber cereals ( and colon cleanse tablets ) Colon Blow. another ad they had, was quarry cereal, "chock full of minerals" and "stays crunchy in milk" basically rocks.
I’m on a laxative now for a colonoscopy tomorrow and had to look up this ad.
🎶"Colon Blow and you in the morning..."🎶 LMFAO
I miss Phil Hartman!
gold!
Sung by Phoebe Snow.
I saw this skit when it came out, a parody of a cereal commercial from the late 80's - early 90's. Still hilarious.
Excellent effects. A timeless skit.
I love how Super Colon Blow is just sticks and bark
Colon Blow will never not be funny
Just wait till someone finds a way to be offended by it. Its sooner than you think!!!
I have been telling everyone I know about this episode for what seems like decades looking for clues on how to locate it and then SURPRISE there it is ALL BRAN oops I mean COLON BLOW ! I cried laughing the first time I saw this one.
@@SticksUWP so does that mean it's offensive to you?
Kate7950 ...It will never be funny TO YOU. You speak for yourself and you are entitled to your opinion.
Rick Cruz ...I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember the “Gravel Nuts” commercial they did either the 1st or 2 yr the show aired.
1:29 “colon blow and yoooou in the mor-nin “ 😂😂😂
I've been singing this jingle for most of my life. LOVE it!
Exactly - randomly sing this over the decades for some reason (everyone like wtf)
@@manualLaborer IKR it's like no one knows about it. And I sing it almost every day 😅
Phoebe Snow, right? Sounds like her. Jingle is hilarious
@@jackiejns983 Yep, that's Phoebe Snow Singing this 'Colon Blow' Jingle!
Totally overlooked is how they got (I think) Phoebe Snow, famous for "Poetry Man" to sing the Colon Blow jingle at the end...such great production value back then.
Awww, Phil Hartman, one of my favorites. RIP. This commercial is a classic!
I wonder why it took SNL so long to put this on the tube. Phil Hartman was a class act. This is one of the funniest SNL skits ever.
They were VERY against youtube access for a long time. Then they woke up
If SNL* Producer Lorne Michaels cannot figure out a way to make a profit off of it, then it would not be seen on UA-cam* at all!
@@bakersupreme2010
That’s because his real name is Lorne David LIPOWITZ, which explains it all. Interesting how there is such a long history of them disguising who they are by surname changes, ain’t it?
Phoebe Snow singing the jingle at the end is just absolutely perfect too 🤣
scrolled through the comments just to see if anyone mentioned the jingle at the end, thats my favorite part.
Wow! I had no idea!!
This never stops making me laugh. I remember laughing until I cried when this originally aired.
Me too! Good times.
Perfect parody of those old Total commercials.
A classic, makes me think of my dad! We all have those favorite sketches that just make us laugh our asses off every single time, and this was one of his.
I fell off the sofa laughing when this first aired in the eighties. 🤣
This is a pretty advanced production for a comedy commercial skit in 1989. That raising pyramid wouldn't be easy even today
1989 and 1990 did give us the peak of pre-CGI effects. We need The Making of Colon Blow video.
I remember Phil Hartman's introduction in fact they played it on SNL as a tribute to him. He was such a tremendously talented person. Exceptionally funny. His introduction was a dance with Jan Hooks, who was his alter-ego.
Phil Hartman was the best!! He also did illustrations for album covers for the bands "America" "Crosby Stills and Nash" and "Steely Dan" It sucks the way that he died. He was a great actor/comedian!! Thank you so much for sharing this.!!
When I was in middle school, I loved this commercial. Today, I realize how back then I didn't get the symbolism of him sitting on top of a mountain of brown cereal.
_"Warning: May cause abdominal distension"_
lol. I bet.
I don’t get it....
@@beavermuffin fiber bloats you up
McCoy: My God, man. Do you want an acute case on your hands? This woman has immediate postprandial, upper-abdominal distention. Now, out of the way! Get out of the way!
[They enter the operating room]
Kirk: What did you say she has?
McCoy: Cramps.
The production value on this is unreal.
yeah . i wonder how they did the shot of him on the cereal bowls and the wider shot, seems hard. LOL did they actually stack bowls and have him sit on the top?!
Nobody could send up commercial spokesmen better than Phil Hartman. Just pitch perfect.
I'd forgotten the jingle at the end:
''Colon Blow and you-ou-ou! In the morning!"
That looked so real how Phil Hartman was lifted up by all those bowls of cereal! Funny stuff!
One of the best 🔥
verified and you commented 3 years ago and no one has replied...? weird
I agree 100% of the time!!!!!!!!!!!
Massive head wound Harry
The best. EVER. "Sounds delicious!!!"
Phil Hartman had a voice that could end wars.
Maybe you're right, the Berlin wall was taken down around this time
That's a great end jingle. "Colon Blow'n you, in the morning". RIP Phil Hartman.
It's all about the contrast between the awful imagery that the phrase "colon blow" conjures in your mind, coupled with Phil's super-calm, supportive attitude toward the idea (at least initially).😂 Man, I remember laughing so hard at this as a kid, I was doubled over!
HOW CAN HE MAINTAIN A SERIOUS FACE?? PURE GENIUS!!!!
Unlike that no-talent Jimmy Fallon who was as bad an actor as he is a comedian.
This is the first Phil Hartman sketch I ever saw as a child. It’s how I remember him. What a loss of a phenomenal human being. Seriously.
I was just cracking my sister up in the grocery store referencing Colon Blow. She didn't remember this skit. Colon Blow and the Lung Brush, 2 of my favorite fake commercial products from SNL.
Haha Lung Brush!!!!
"Lung brush" was all I needed to laugh audibly.
Light up the 5D to Phil Hartman and Phoebe Snow!! This sketch is hilarious! 😂💜
Phil Hartman’s voice is funny enough 🤣🤣
I remember when this first aired. I know most people hold the first group to be the best, but for me, the 86-91 group was the best. They came around at the time I was old enough to understand pop culture and politics and they really knocked it out of the park.
For me: It's 75-80 then 86-94.
I agree. As actors, the original cast might have been better, but as a sketch comedy troupe, I think this iteration is better -- and in no small part due to Phil Hartman's work.
Very much in agreement. I was quite young, but my parents let me watch SNL. It really, honestly shaped me quite a bit as a person.
Phenomenal era for SNL with the writing and cast at that time.
I can't believe this is 30 years old now. I remember seeing this the night it first aired. I didn't get it but remember my parents were just dying laughing. I miss this era of SNL.
Now Rick from Pawn Stars owns to the Super Colon blow box 😂
One of the best RIP Phil Hartman
My brother and I only watched SNL on every other weekend when we were with our dad. And we still managed to see most of the classics from the late 80s-early 90s era. SNL was that good.
It costs extra, but Colon Blow is my favorite happy ending at the Bath House Massage Parlor.
Giggidy
I bet her kiss tastes like strawberries.
Phil Hartman was one of the greatest comedians ever on SNL.
Phil playing it like the nerdy, oblivious straight man made it perfect
This... my god.... takes me back. I saw this and laughed so hard I missed the Super Colon Blow part
This takes me back to the fledgling days of *Comedy Central,* when they all they'd play all day was old *"SNL"* and *"Kids in the Hall"* reruns and old Stand-Up Specials of actually GOOD comedians (before EVERYONE decided to do stand-up) and their only original shows were things like *"Win Ben Stein's Money"* and *"Dr. Katz"* .....Ah yes, the good old days 😊
Honey Bee86 Don't forget Monty Python! And I remember Penn Gillette being the voice for all of Comedy Central's ads.
Aaah before Ben Stein decided no to be funny at all. :(
Pre-south park comedy central was the shit
I saw early Seinfeld stand up before he got his show and said, “His show will never last” when it came on the air. He wasn’t all that funny then but the four of them together made magic. Long story short, don’t trust me to be a TV critic. “It stinks!”
I too remember those days. And don't forget the Upright Citizens Brigade, Viva Variety, Bob & Margaret, and the Man Show
Phil Hartman really reminds me of Bryan Cranston in this spoof.
This and Bass~o~matic are my favorite SNL commercials.
Still my favorite SNL "commercial skit" of all time! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Jim B. Mine was oops i crapped my pants
"I hate that show, okay? They have these commercials that you think are real... and then, you wanna buy the stuff!" - Jackie Burkhart
It's either this or the Love Seat toilet.
"Sounds delicious." I still miss Phil Hartman.
I miss when SNL was like this. :(
Spectacular Spider-Man - Me too.... THESE were the glory days
When it was funny, right? Funny thing, SNL always seems to stop being funny for any original material released after you turn about 25 or so.
same
I do all the time.
You mean 'good'?
This might be the earliest SNL ad I recall. The quality was very professional for a parody.
Finally!!! I have searched for this many times!!

Love that little soulful Colon Blowww uuuu at the end, just beautiful
🎵Colon blow & YOOOOOUUUU...

To anyone who doesn't know, the cereal "total" had a series of commercials that was similar to this. Also, holy cow, is that Phil Hartman? I didn't know he was on SNL when he was that young!
he looks a bit thinner now
@@zimriel sadly yes
This was shown on British TV. It was so off the wall and outrageous back then, I remember just wanting to see more of this crazy American humour but none over here got it back then. Another opportunity missed!
that emotional singing about colon blow at the end is the best

Everything I like has RIP somewhere in the comments *sigh*. I'm old
This is one of the 1st episodes I ever watched as a young teen! This commercial and Farley for hybernol are top 2 of all time
I wonder how many people watching know the real commercials, for Total cereal, this is spoofing.
Probably not a LOT, but it stands alone as well.
I knew about them at the time of seeing this live but didn’t remember it was Total.
Who is here after watching Pawn Stars? Haha
Yep...Me
All of us I think
Huh?
Me me me!!!
Why would pawn stars bring anyone here?
RIP Phil. One of the greats whose life was cut way too short. This is back when SNL still had good writers and knew how to close out skits. What happened? This show's been a shell of itself for more than a decade now.
SNL is like the pandemic. It has its hills and valleys.
@@MilnocIt’s been in a valley for 30 years.

One I can't find on YT is Quarry Cereal (made entirely out of rocks). "It's good, cuz it's mined!"
Erotic cakes!
Crystal Gravy was amazing too.
Going for my first colonoscopy & Doc didn't give me stuff you mix like others I'd talked to.Nope he gave me a box of Colon Blow
I don’t get it....
I’m on that stuff right now and had to look up this ad. Feel so clean inside, LOL.
When is the Ultra Colon Blow coming out?
It's not gonna "come out" this is a very old clip from the late 70's or early 80's. Phil Hartman is dead now. His wife shot him, I think
Never. The testing groups literally cannot find their entire lower intestinal tract after the first spoonful.
It will-be "coming-out" about 15-minutes after it's been-eaten.
Just get Ulcerative Colitis and you won't need any cereal for a Colon Blow
Immediately!
An oldie but a goodie
The pawn stars episode brought me here. RIP Phil H😎
Phil Hartman: Very dedicated to broadcasting Excellence.
As an 8 year old, I never knew what a colon was until this commercial.
Just saw the "Super Colon Blow" box prop on Pawn Stars. Had to check this snl skit.
Total blast of nostalgia! I think this was the first episode I watched as a teenager!
Super funny commercial. Thanks for the post here.

If you ate that much fiber at once, you'd be lucky if you had any bones left afterwards...
Hahahaha lmfao!👋🤣👍
I don’t get it...
while you still have the wayback machine turned on, can we please get some Action Cats?
"For God's sake, woman, just give me the cat's ass!"
This is funniest if you lived back then and remember all the serious TV commercials about breakfast cereals with fiber
