After Man seems far more likely to me than more and more direct human derivatives. I can appreciate that, even if there's an element of entertainment value missing.

After Man was something Dixon made out of passion. Man after Man was something he made with pressure from editors.
That's why the tone got more pessimistic. There was another book, published only in Japan, which he considers the true sequel to After Man. Unfortunately he couldn't publish it worldwide.

I always thought Man After Man was usually mostly used as a source for Meme pictures. It reminds me of the kind of book a weirdo relative gave you as a 8th birthday present.

I do think your idea of the 80s influencing Dougal Dixon's views on humanity holds a lot of weight! I hadn't even thought about it, but that makes complete sense. I feel like we collectively have come to a point where we understand that it's not man who inherently destroys everything it touches but power.

Man after man is the OG of speculative evolution literally one of the best spec evo works of all time, I see man after man as more like a little fun speculative evolution story Dixon wanted to make tho I know he was pressured to make it different by the authors. You can tell he really put thought into after man tho and was very passionate about making it and it shows one of the reasons why its so good, always a joy and interesting to re-read even nowadays a little outdated it's still cool

Actually After Man was orginally Going to have an Ocean Segment which the Vortex was going to be Featured in instead, Acrroding to the Spec evo Wiki "Illustrations of an unused long-necked otter and sirenian-like beaver are shown. Various species of fish are shown, alongside what could be an early incarnation of the Flightless auk are shown, alongside deep-sea fish like a widemouth snaggletoothed anglerfish, a gulper eel and a big-eyed squid." Which is a Shame too, Apparently its in EXTREMLY rare Beta Versions of After Man and I think it was Cut last Minute Since the Pacaus Coral Fish was shown at the beginning Hinting they Probably Took it out Last minute for unknown reasons.

I personally really enjoyed Man After Man. After Man does seem interesting with just how animals evolved once humans really aren't present. But I like the ideas Man After Man introduces where you have all of these altered humans that follow a similar template, then through many different factors they all evolve and change to the point of not even being recognizable as human and not recognizing each other as human anymore. This gets shown even more when you just see different former human species hunting each other down and stuff. I know a lot of people generally don't like the illustrations but I personally like them and don't mind the graphic nature of them. Good videos Qu! 😁

Man after man is a joke, the artwork by Phil Hood looks like 15 year old did it. I own After man is by leaps and bounds superior and the artwork is improved. Both are hilarious and complete speculative nonsense, not for serious people who take evolution seriously.
