    I gagged and coughed the whole time a few years back. This test is like torture! They probably videoed several patients, and of course chose the one that didn't gag and hurl.

    I had this done on Weds. It was the most awful, tortuous experience I have ever had to endure. Absolutely no numbing medication for the nose or throat. Nurse #1 got the first effort to the back of my throat and pulled it out when I started gagging so terribly. Second effort went in a little further, but I started vomiting with each sip of water to try to get it down. Nurse #2 came in and started over. She simply worked her way through the gagging and vomiting until she was happy with the placement. No protective smock or hospital gown either. Just a towel that felt like it had been reclaimed from an old motel. Then during the saline sipping process, my saliva went overboard, but your couldn't swallow except on command, so i had to try to keep spitting into a towel from a 45 degree angle. The woman in this video must be completely drugged up. Forget water boarding. This is real torture. Fortunately, the nurses decided I wasn't a good candidate for the overnight ph test. No kidding!

      Seems like you shouldnt go back there. People obviously need a numbing agent or of course this procedure will be like inducing vomit each time.

      I TOTALLY AGREE! I was not offered or administered ANY NUMBING of my nose or throat. I still can't believe I let someone do that to me! 4 tries before they got it inserted, while I gagged, my eyes kept tearing up, and I had a death grip on my chair.

    I had this done today. It was not as bad as I had expected. I had read/heard about other people's experiences and was terrified - I didn't think I was going to get through it. I also have some PTSD from an awake endoscopy 7 years ago. I'm not going to lie, it was gaggy and uncomfortable but I told the tech I was super stressed and she was really supportive. Top tips: don't hesitate in starting to swallow/drink when they start pushing it down. You might feel like resisting it, but it really helps. Follow their instructions on head placement - chin up/down as required. Breathe slowly and don't try to talk while it's in - you might find it reassuring to write yourself some communication cards in case you want to ask questions or say things during the test. Try not to bump or move the tube either, because that's when it becomes uncomfortable. I found the most panicky bit was the first minute or so after it was placed - it was less noticeable after about 5 mins. I had a rarer variation of this test where I actually completed a standing modified barium swallow test under X-ray after the usual testing with water. I had to eat bread and drink contrast with the probe in, so the whole thing took much longer (around 25 mins with it in) and involved moving around. The eating/drinking with the tube was surprisingly easy and I was still coping ok by the end. Hold your breath when they pull it out, and make sure they give you a count down. If you need to get this test done, give it a go - if you can't get through it there's no shame, but you might have a positive experience like mine and you'll never know if you don't try.

      I had attempted to do this test today and it was absolutely traumatizing. Worst test I have ever had done. I thought I was going in for a barium swallow. If I didn’t have medical trauma before I do now. We couldn’t even start the test it was awful and I couldn’t stop vomiting. Idk why I even had to have this test this isn’t how SMAS is diagnosed and that’s what we are testing for. I think it’s time to go to therapy

Not nice, but not too bad. Gagged a fair bit and a little pain.Person performing the procedure was very sweet and the experience certainly didn't leave me with any trauma! had to have this done twice in a few years span for achalasia. first time they combined it with an esophageal endoscopy so I was knocked out for the insertion and then woken up with the catheter in and had to wait almost an hour before they started the test to make sure I was completely awake. the second time I was awake and was given no numbing agent whatsoever. I was also just getting over a sinus infection so both nostrils were clogged. first attempt couldn't get it through so they attempted the other with even worse luck so the went back to the first nostril and got it down. gagged multiple times while it was passing and once it was finally in place I was almost in tears. when the test was done the nurse literally grabbed my face and the tube and ripped it out. I really hope I never have to get it done again

    I had this done today at Cedars-Sinai in LA. A few tips: I didn't get any anesthetic in my throat - not needed. The nose is the most important part. I asked to self-insert the long Q-tip holding a glob of 0.2 lidocaine (rather weak) inside my nostril (they ask for your preferred nostril). It has to go pretty far up, or else you won't be numbed. Don't lie down if you don't have to. Just sit upright perpendicular to the bed with your feet dangling off the bed. The gagging sensation is very brief and your physician (I had a physician AND nurse) will instruct you to breathe at the right moment. Also, pulling your head down toward your chest helps IMMENSELY. I grabbed the nurse's hand as the physician pushed the tube down the esophagus - that was the creepiest part of it. Once it's in, you realize you're not going to choke - it's just a little scratchy in your throat from the tube. The nurse should hold the cup of water and hold the straw toward your mouth. You get the hang of it after a while. At some point, the physician has you take 10 small sips, as in sip, hold, swallow, sip, hold, swallow etc. Some of the water is salt water (not that bad). The whole thing is over in 10 minutes. It looks rather creepy, so just close your eyes. Peek when the straw comes to your mouth (you don't want to miss, the water feels good going down the hatch). Also, it looks weird when the tubing comes out of your mouth - I thought it was covered in blood, but it's just the brown sensors inside. Not keen on doing this again any time soon, but if I had to, I know I'd make it. They both gave me an A+ for effort :-)

    I attempted to have this test done and even with numbing agents I gagged about a thousand times and also threw up any of the water I had drunk to get the tube down. I have never gagged so much in my life! After I threw up I felt the tube move and without even thinking I just ripped it right out, I couldn't take it another second! This test is absolutely impossible to do. Your body is going to react by having something in the throat that shouldn't be there, either by trying to swallow it (which defeats the purpose of the test of trying to only swallow on command) or cough it up. I agree with the guy below who said the CIA should use this on terrorists for torture. That's seriously what it feels like. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. And as far as the pH study goes, ask your doc if you can do the wireless version called a Bravo study instead.

      Had this done a week ago and was administered by an RN. After four attempts which resulted in gagging, regurgitation, coughing as a result of affixiation (water went into lungs)and I could not quit coughing for about ten minutes. I almost gave up and she ultimately called the doctor in and the doctor completed it within five minutes with none of these symptoms. I believe it has to do with experience. Still waiting for results. LOL, at some of the comments, as I told my family afterwards it was like "Water Torture". Still trying to decide if I tell the doctor that this nurse needs more training.

(including natural childbirth and a chronic CSF leak) They tried to use hurricaine aerosol spray in my throat and lidocaine jelly in my nose: perhaps viscous would have been better. Two techs made 4 attempts each to pass it pass my carina and I needed raecemic after for the laryngeal spasm. and my nose is still oozing. This was aweful.

    I had this procedure this morning. The comments in this thread had me pretty freaked out.
    Though it wasn't my favorite and I'd like to not do it again, it wasn't bad AT ALL. She put lidocaine in both nostrils. She tried putting the probe in one side and I felt some uncomfortable pressure and when she wasn't able to get it in (deviated septum?) she tried the other side and it slid right in. It felt like I had swallowed a toothpick... not painful... just sitting there. I followed her instructions and only swallowed when she told me to and the test itself was over in less than 10 minutes. I didn't gag though there were a few seconds that I thought I might.
    The worst part was actually taking it out, which is super freaky and a little uncomfortable but that's literally 5 seconds.
    If you have to have this test done, try not to freak out. I hope your tech is as nice, patient and gentle as mine. :)

    I failed this test miserably the first time. My throat was so numb I could not, or I felt like I could not swallow. I gagged multiple times (even with the lidocaine) and the nurse was HORRIBLE I think she was trying to stick it in my windpipe. I will say, I am a nurse and I work with some of the endoscopy nurses. It just so happened, I got the nurse I cannot stand. She has terrible bedside manner. Anyway, that being said, I tried it again today. I requested a nurse, other than the first one, and she was excellent. She explained everything to me and had me do deep breathing after the placement so I would not gag and I had my friend with me. It made a WORLD of difference. We only used about 5cc's of viscous lidocaine. I did not feel it going in my nose but I felt it a little in my throat and absolutely no gagging, only watery eyes. I also had a ph monitor placed and this thing is driving me crazy. It is making my throat sore. Not sure how I will know when I have heartburn etc. because my body is saying, ouch that thing in your nose. lol. Some nurses are very good at this and some suck! I encourage folks to try it again and let the office know you would like a nurse who has good bedside manner.

      I agree. Although my technician didn't even offer any numbing of anything, and the insertion took 5 tries, I would have shoved that probe through her nose via her butt if she wasn't so sweet and patient! The results validated my 20 years of explaining my swallowing problems all the while being called a hypochondriac.

    I had the procedures done this morning, and still have the probe in my nose. It was not painful, sometimes it was uncomfortable having the catheter inserted, but the numbing stuff does a great job. The probe is much thinner, and not so noticeable. I know it's there when I drink and eat, but not painful, or even uncomfortable, at all. I would say the worst part of the entire process is not being able to be on the anti-heartburn medications, especially today. However the purpose is for the probe to measure the pH in my stomach. I did have to throw up this morning because it got so bad, but not everyone will experience that. I will be glad to have the probe out tomorrow morning and get back on my protonix. But it is not a procedure to be scared of. They make sure you are as comfortable as can be.

    If you have a strong gag reflex and a phobia of puking like myself, this test is basically impossible. I tried having it done yesterday and I had to stop them a few seconds after it went past my gag reflex. Personally, I'd only be able to handle something like this if it were a life or death scenario. There are other tests out there that take similar measurements to this one, but they aren't as accurate/may not be covered by your insurance. Good luck to everyone that has to go trough this test and hopefully you find all the results you need.

  • @RPK-11

    I had this done today (and currently have the 24 hour acid reflux test tube inserted too). I should point out, I have a terrible gag reflex. I gag even just brushing my teeth, dentists x-rays are torture. I've even had a dentist procedure abandoned because of gagging (thankfully they hadn't really started). I also have an absolute hatred for vomiting and a fear of choking (especially because food sometimes gets lodged in my esophagus. I was freaking out before this test, and had convinced myself that I couldn't do it. I was gagging even just thinking about it the night before. I have to say, it is NOWHERE NEAR as bad as people in the comments are making out. I had the numbing spray up my nostril and into my throat. The part I was dreading was when it was going down my throat because my gag is so bad. The nurse asked me just to continuously sip water like I was really thirsty and she was even saying "this is the worst part", but I actually didn't feel anything at all. The water sipping works wonders - I was super skeptical about that. Now the whole thing was definitely uncomfortable and unpleasant. I did dry wretch once about three quarters of the way through because I felt the end of the cable was moving around slightly. The feeling was worse sitting up rather than lying back. I would not be rushing back to have this done again, it's super uncomfortable, but it's also very doable. It only lasts 10-15 mins. Not 40mins like advertised in some leaflets. The 24 hour tube is so easy in comparison. It literally feels like hardly anything. Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to taking it out, but it only feels like a tickle from something tiny stuck in my throat.

    I didn't gag/retch at all, I only panicked a bit at one point, when the tube was starting to slide down my esophagus (it feels funny!). I was surprised to hear I was the youngest patient the healthcare professional had seen (16). Also - she explained everything clearly, step-by-step, and answered questions with ease, as she'd been doing this for years. It was a very good experience. I'm puzzled to see how peoples' bodies have reacted negatively to this in the comments. I'm glad I never looked this up on UA-cam before my test, otherwise I'd probably have felt very anxious. Everyone's body reacts differently - and I don't know how it is in the US, but in the UK I had a positive experience with the NHS...and everything seemed to be carried out almost the same in this video.
    Also, I had no problems sleeping at night. Sometimes it felt scratchy and talking was uncomfortable, other times it felt absolutely fine - like it wasn't even there. Warm fluids was really helpful, and I could eat foods perfectly fine (minus the reflux problem lol). Once it was taken out I didn't have a sore nose or throat. I felt back to normal. So, to anyone getting a manometry, good luck.

      It was worse than torture. I would have confessed to 9/11 to get them to stop-- but I was too busy gagging to talk.

      Kate Cronin I hear that! I just had mine and all over the net people are saying "not that bad".... hUH?! It was terrible! I couldn't complete the stupid thing. The numbing agent didn't work, the doc had a hell of a time getting through my narrow nostril. I was wretching /dry heaving uncontrollably and when he finally got it in my stomach I begged him to get it out. I went into a full on panic attack (have a panic disorder) and started shaking profusely, while sobbing... NEVER AGAIN! I may need therapy...lol seriously! I am now being set up to be knocked out and have some radio wave device put into my esophagus, that will pass with my stool? Sound too good and strange to be true.

      Alice Cries Haha, that was pretty much my same experience, except I was more moaning than crying. I have anxiety too so that certainly did not help. I was able to finish the test but I was not able to do a 24hr ph test which is done the same way, except you keep the tube in for A WHOLE DAY! I said hell no to that so I did exactly what you're going to do. I had an endoscopy where they put a little pin in my esophagus that eventually came off so I could pass it. It really does work! The procedure is just like taking a little nap, though the pin itself caused me some pain, but that's unusual.

      Oh no. I failed mine miserably the first time because I just gagged and gagged. My throat was too numb and I felt like I couldn't swallow yet, I still gagged. The nurse just sucked, period. I did get through it (the second time today) with the help of the fantastic nurse and my friend. I understand the panic. After it was over and she took the thing out of my nose, I started shaking and my teeth were chattering....that's how amped up I was on adrenaline.

    I had this test today... It was extremely uncomfortable, not really painful, but yeah, a bit torturous. First trip "down the throat", the probe coiled up in my sinus cavity - that was a bit painful. Second trip down, same thing but the nurse realized what was happening (that and me climbing up the back up the bed to get away from her). Third time was a charm. Only a couple gags, not terrible. Best thing to do is relax your body and mind, breathe in and out through your mouth (practice "box breathing" before you go - it helps). The nurse told me three times "This is very uncomfortable but totally do-able". The nurse explained it perfectly.

  • @ryebread710
    @ryebread710 5 років тому +3

    Let me start by saying that you can do this test. It’s mind over matter. Naturally your body wants to reject the tube and you will gag, but you will get adjusted to it and it will be smooth sailing. I just had mine today and it was only 20 minutes long! Anyone can handle some discomfort for that long!

    I read the negative reviews to better prepare myself for this test yesterday. It sucked and i somehow remained stiff as a board,trying not to panic because it was painful to swallow with it in,the tech numbed my throat again halway through because i started wincing in paim again. Water for 10 sips and then a thicker like substance for 10 sips. Towards the end i just focused on my breathing and just trying to get it over because i had to wait longer every time i swallowed when i wasnt supposed to. Eyes watering down my face,barg bag in one hand because i regurgitated some of the water and a saliva suctioner in the other to keep me from gagging more. Lol. I hope i never have to do that again.
    The other tech who helped did a really good job with keeping me as relaxed as possible. They said i did a good job and im sad i didnt get a sucker and sticker for that because it was rough.
    Tips:bite tongue and stick it out and hold after swallowing. I breathed through my mouth because breathing through my nose felt even more weird. They said people with a strong gag reflex usually have a harder time.

    Omg! I've had this done multiple times!!! NOT FUN!!!! But they didn't give me lidocaine in my throat...just my nose...and they didn't put that protective smock on me.
    One of the times I regurgitated blood and water on the doctors!! I always choke and gag when this happens!! And afterwards, it still feels like the tube is still in throat!!!

    IF THE TECHNICIAN DOES NOT GIVE YOU NUMBING SPRAY, ASK FOR IT! I did not even know I SHOULD have received NUMBING spray in my nose and throat, resulting in the most horrific test I have ever been through! My technician tried twice in each nostril before she managed to get the probe fully inserted. The results showed I had significant pressure in my esophagus and was finally validated after 20 years of being called a hypochondriac.

    Patient needs to be relaxed and previously to inform them every movement when the catheter is introduced and exists the posibility gagging or coughing and it isn possible o control this reflex. We have an ad hoc questionnaire to evaluate the quality of procedure. the point is TO INFORM Dra Y.C.

    I had this done last week and it was yuck. Unlike this video I had to swallow water while lying flat on my back - not easy.
    As bad as this test was, it was a walk in a park compared to its oesophageal 24hr pH monitoring counterpart - smaller tube but it was rigid and quite sharp - scratched my throat and nose up something awful. And it was SHEER HELL!

  • @CandelaZ
    @CandelaZ 8 років тому +1

    Had a ph study and this is similar. Even with local anesthetic, still gagged. But eventually it was ok and had to keep the stupid tube in for 24 hours. Fun times. Not sure why they cant just combine the ph test (wich doesnt even give a reading of how much, just acidic and or bile presence) with this test and get it all done in one shot instead of torturing people.

    • @francis_n
      @francis_n 7 років тому

      For the ph test it's necessary to record your acidity levels over a longer period of time, with respect to different types of food you will consume
