  • It has been a few trips to the plot this week and the foxes are really getting brave! It is so lovely to see them sunbathing and enjoying life. Planting out the runner beans and pumpkins, a catch up from the home garden. It's a busy busy time! Lots of thanks as always for watching.

Living in cold Alberta Canada, I grow hardneck garlic, planting them in mid Autumn, harvesting in around mid July. I harvest the curly scapes about 2-3 weeks before, which allow the bulb underneath to get larger. I harvest when most of the tops are brown. I use the scapes for cooking as they're delicious. As far as onions go, I cut the tops at least once during the grow period, (12" down to about 6") the leaves will continue to grow, don't worry, I find the energy then goes to the bulb, also I spoon away some compost directly around the bulbs that are showing, in order for the bulbs to have the space to fatten up. This works in my world, zone 3 very long, cold snowy winters. My frost dates are last week of May, 1st to mid-September, very short season. You've put a lot of work in again. it looks great. Have a wonderful week. I'm really excited about the poly tunnel for you now. You've waited long enough 😅

Thank you so much, that's really useful info. Yes polytunnel excitement, it is now installed - weather played havoc so waiting for a dry day to get things organised. Hope you are having a great week. 😊🌻

Yes they really are wonderful creatures, I'm afraid I waste quite a lot of time just watching them at the plot. 😊🌻

They really are! It would seem strange not to see them at the plot every day now. 😊🌻

😂😂 it’s better than standing on your head I guess Christine. They are a beautiful animal but so destructive 😢. We finally got absolute pour downs but it brought out slugzilla and they ate my tomato plants. The onions are ok and totally edible they just don’t store as well. Slugs dig under ground up to 6’ Liz Zorab said 😱😱. Garlic gets scapes not seed heads and it should curl, once it does yiu can cut them off low and eat them. They are delicious sautéed or as a pesto. Really coming along great and such a lovely place to sit and have a cuppa. Have a wonderful week Christine, Ali 🌧️🌧️🌥️🇨🇦

Oh no - so sorry to hear about your tomato plants! Pesky slugs!!! Going to have a go with the garlic scapes - thank you. Hope you are having a great week. 😊🌻

Garlic scapes (flower stalk) is something I see people picking off and using well before the garlic itself is ready. It’s my first year with garlic, so have no experience myself. But I’d pick them off and leave the garlic to continue doing its thing 😊

You have done so much more than you give yourself credit for Christine. The 2nd but if plot you've taken on personally I'd stick the pumpkins ,sqaush and courgette I'm as they will spread and cover the weeds so fewer will grow and less to take care of . Xx

Great advice thank you. I planted some marrows on there yesterday and plan to put some courgettes in too - smother those weeds! Hope you are having a good week. 😊🌻

Ah that's what it is - burning! I'll move them to a shadier spot - that's when the sun returns! 😊🌻
