October 7, 2024 Township of Wellington North Cultural Moment - Charles Rankin

The October 7, 2024 Cultural Moment highlights the contributions of surveyor Charles Rankin and Chief Nawash to the mapping and creation of Highway 6. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rankin respected Indigenous knowledge, which helped him accurately identify the Saugeen River. Despite initial government skepticism, Rankin's work was later validated, and the settlement known as Maitland Hills was renamed Mount Forest.
