Agreed. Unfortunately, gaming has changed quite a bit. People's tastes in games have changed. The jrpg's we all remember fondly and love so much have mostly been replaced with western rpg's, and the 2D and 3D platformers have been mostly replaced with 1st person shooters. It really sucks, and although they might make a comeback someday, they will probably never again be quite as popular and numerous as they once were. If you look at other super popular things from the past that made a comeback, they were never quite as hot the second time around, nor did they last as long as the first time.
Most RPG series were overshadowed by final fantasy. But to be honest, final fantasy is highly over rated and not nearly as enjoyable as over series like Breath of Fire, Lufia, Persona, Suikoden.

Alright, I'll say it, I'm the only one who's going to say it. I love Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. Pretty good story, great graphics, I absolutely love the battle system, the ant village is my favorite of all the town mini-games, the game starts out at ancient high-tech setting, and the optional dungeon is well done. I really wish it had been received better.
Andres Marrero You can easily turn into a dragon in like 25% to 40% of your battles and be just fine. It's more a resource management mechanic than a punishment mechanic. It just means you start over with more skills, better items, and try to manage your resources better not that you lose everything and start from zero.
@@georgeclinton4524 it kills you causing you to restart and replay the game all over again. That is a punishment that is slightly mitigated that you somehow keep all that stuff, but it does drain on people's attention and patience because no one wants to play the same story beats over and over again. It is a punishment with a consolation prize attached. That's poor game design, especially the care mechanic of the franchise is your ability to turn into a dragon which is nullified here because it kills you. So the one thing that people look forward to in a breath of fire game is a punishment, not to mention you hardly look like a dragon at all and the story isn't interesting enough to justify having to restart from the beginning with all the frustration and boredom that initiates. It is no wonder that it is pretty much hated.
Adres Marrero I played it again last year on a fresh save without remembering how most of the systems work and I got through without having to restart once and turned into a dragon whenever I felt like it. It's really not as difficult as you're making it out to be. If you're having to restart multiple times you either are refusing to learn very basic mechanics or probably aren't good at interfacing with games in general. The story where you live trapped in a high-tech subterranean mega-complex as part of a repressive caste system that you have to rebel against to take a dying girl to a surface world that everyone has forgotten exists, even the dragon-gods who oversee it, isn't interesting? Your partner who becomes your rival, sacrificing everything including his life just to have the power you were freely granted, a ruler who was granted the same power you were but didn't have the courage to see it through standing in your way hoping you are powerful enough to defeat him, human genetic experimentation and the hero's self-sacrifice and willingness to go against the whole world to save 1 innocent victim isn't interesting? Have you ever actually played BOF: DQ all the way through or are you just complaining based on your reaction to an initial hour or two playing it before you dropped it forever?
Crapcom should really drop the series and stop throwing mud all over the title. 3-4 were the best rpgs i've ever played, great story RPG mechanics(classic). I tried 5 but dropped it middleway and 6... I don't even want to touch it. You know since sprites aren't that hard to be made maybe someone could start another game based on bof sprites as an indie game. :)
The stories in each Breath of Fire are very self-contained but it will help the situation if you have played previous games since references will be made to the previous entries.
BoF 3 is without any doubt the best in the series and one of the best jrpg in my opinion! So many little details in this game that you have a different playthrough anytime, while you learn new things about the game. Also the concept of turning into a dragon fits far better than just having dragon attacks. Only thing I don'tget is that the end indicates the start for BoF 4 yet we have different characters all of the sudden and Ryu is suddenly a stranger again at the start.. They should have taken BoF4 into BoF3 completly or as a sorta expansion version
I am currently playing SMT 3: Nocturne, not knowing that people think it's too hard. It's not too hard, and is pretty damn enjoyable for the most part. I want try out another rpg or try out strategy rpgs for the first time. I heard the shining force series was pretty good for new SRPG players, I might try that or just play a BoF game for that sweet sprite work.
Each and every title is dear to me. Honestly dragon quarter was awesome. It was a rogue like game before it was popular on console and before indie games.
breath of fire 3 was the only game of the series I have play and not got that far but that might be as I enjoy being the dragon at the start and shaking to get out

No it was defunct not long after release. An actual dead game. The same happened to Grandia Online, and that killed that series even before. So Capcom had to know that would happen.
Firt one is still the best for me. I love them all including 5 (6 just does not exist). But BOFI is the seminal one, so strange, mystic, quietly slow... I even love the Mangas from the series (BOFI and IV have their own manga version).
