Sri Lankans, particularly the Sinhalese, (I am not blaming them) have a kind of Love-Hate- attitude toward India. These are unique to Sinhalese Christians mostly. They are paranoid about India as a giant neighbor, waiting to road roller their perceived "tiny" Island. The fear of being over run by India is there in the mid of all Sinhalese Even the most educated...And they talk about "Sovereignty" of Sri Lanka... They hate India, because they perceive India as close to Tamil- Hindus or Tamils-Hindus of Sri Lanka seems at home in India, particularly the Southern States of Tamil Nadu and as Hindus they thing the whole of India is backing them (But International Politics does not work that way) They Love India as they think they are descendants of Bengali Prince VIjaya, who was banished by his father along with his 600 friends..who came along the eastern coast and settled in the Island, married a local Princess, called Kuveni, and then he killed her and took over the island so the legend- (Not history) goes... The expansion of Chola Empire is depicted in a highly politicised way in text books as one of the Sinhala Kings fighting and chasing the Cholas from the Island (Hiding the fact the Pandya kings of the then Pandya Kingdom supported them and made marriage alliances with the Sinhala King to fight off Cholas) It is complex. And this complexity is reflected in their love-hate attitude towards India.
I wouldn't surprise about their feelings. Because how some Jaffna Tamil extremists showed their attitude against Sinhalese and, Sinhalese were aware of the bitter fact that in the past how Indra Gandhi encouraged terrorism in Srilanka, some Tamil Nadu politicians too funded and pampered those terrorists. But later "Karma" showed the consequences, IPKF soldiers and former PM of India ( Indra Gandhi's son) along with Indian civilians and Police officers were killed by the same terrorist group whom they helped and encouraged. Let us forget about the past, currently all younger generation of both communities understand the reality and they want to be only Srilankans. Moreover Buddhism and Hinduism are based on the same philosophy and the current Indian PM respects Srilanka's sovereignty, as a strong neighbor country India is helping Srilanka, moreover both countries got similar cultural values. India got its own internal and external challenges to be resolved, so definitely they will not poke their nose into Srilanka's internal affairs just treat Srilanka as their friendly neighbor.
Sri Lankans watch more Tamil movies and songs than Bollywood because Tamil is an official language in Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka is also home for Tamils. So if you ask about Tamil music and movies, they knew it well. They are more connected to Tamil than Bollywood.
Sinhala is official language in sri lanka and sri lanka is also home for sinhales.And Sri Lanka is a country famous for a great Tamil genocide, and born place in tamil terrorist group (ltte)
