you can do amazing things if u go outside and start actually using your brain to make something :P. But he has had a heck of a teacher his whole life, matt
@@3.0colorado21 anything that had a cab over style of body over engine, excluding Tractors, were generically called doghouses; it was the only way to actually get at the motor short of pulling it out.
Rudy why not teach Zack how to use sheet metal bender and other equipment. That way he’ll be able to work without your supervision and you can focus on everything you need to do. Could you have Zack weld all the places that are only tacked?
Rudy, I like the way you just plow through stuff instead of getting all bogged down with the details. That thing is looking good btw. I can’t wait to see it finished and driving!
I like the fact that you have a blend between wanting to measure and be a little more precise. But also use the cobbling side you learned from being with your dad. That's why I like your channel, as well as TomTom, Matt's Offroad and Fabrats.
the beauty of having your own shop working at 3am. I really miss not having a workspace to work on all my diversified mechanical interests. and I would love to have my own shop again. It sucks having all my tools and equipment scattered amongst three cities and four different locations and not knowing where anything is.
I have always heard a trans tunnel is just for a transmission, and not normally accessible. A dog house is typically a removable cover to access an engine, or part of an engine - like in vans, motor homes, some trucks, and boats.
The dog house is in vans and RVs, you remove it to reach the back of the engine and trans. In a vehicle that has an engine completely accessible from under the hood the hump inside the vehicle is called the transmission tunnel and generally it is non removable but can be made to be removed in custom built vehicles. You have a transmission tunnel.
The difference between a trans tunnel and a dog house is the dog house is removable to work on both the engine and transmission. So a car with a solid tunnel (or even small access panels) would be a trans tunnel. A truck, van, etc that has a large section of the trans tunnel that is removable, the removable part is the dog house, but the dog house is part of the transmission tunnel.
Gooooood morning Rudy and crew! This mini is looking less mini and more mighty with every video! Cant wait to see the thing in action! Also wanted to add WOW Rudy you are a seriously talented fabricator. Amazing to see how you work out the problems as they arrise!
I have always called it a doghouse. Love seeing you guys working on different things. Good luck with your the King Cupper. Peace Love and Happiness to yall
Rudy this is awesome: you make a fantastic presenter with all the additional info that you provide rather than just showing what you have done. Perhaps you could be a tutor one day :)
The "Dog House" is normally what is built over the engine area in Cabover trucks of yesteryear. My 1956 International Day-cab cabover and 1968 Mack cabover had "Dog Houses."
I agree with what say to some extent, brilliant, yes. Give the credit to Matt, no. I am sure you learnt lots from him and being around him and others in your learning years, BUT you have gone on and you are still going on to amazing things. Be proud of your achievements, I think that you are great bloke.
Love seeing the content creator being as passionate as the fan base! Rudy, please know your obsessive brain keeping you up to finish that beautiful floor is totally normal!! Keep up the great work and fun fun fun content!
Rudy you should get some Kevlar material and cover the under side of the transmission/transfer case tunnel, because if you throw a driveshaft or scatter the transmission or transfer case that sheet metal is not going to give you much protection. Just my thoughts. Would hate to see you get hurt.
Im a VW fanatic and have been for about 40 years now. The dog house covers the engine, but I've always understood it to be universal with regard to engine or transmission/ transaxle cover. On any vehicle... Great build, guys!
You get the engineering and innovation award. I just hope they make one of the challenges is to remove the transfer case and reinstall on a timer. Cause Bleepin overkill will be SOL.
I have to say I am fascinated by your work in fabricating parts for your creation from nothing! Between you, your Dad and the whole group of southern Utah fabricators your creations are amazing!
You know you are extremely creative. I don’t know anybody else in this world that has the eye for art like you do very impressive my friend very impressive. I love how you do things you think way outside the box and I’ve always seen everything you do that it always turns out great.

Rudy, you & your team are doing a great job on this project. I love the out of the box thinking on the steering! Cant wait to see it on the trails...gonna be a beast!
Damn right Rudy!!! If I had your abilities and fabricating problem solving skills, not to mention your attention to detail and will to come up with ingenious solutions to overcome any obstacles, I too would have to sit and marvel over what I just invented/created with just my mental and physical tools that I have at my disposal!!! This obviously would also include all the tech/machining/manufacturing tools that others have so graciously created and made available for the rest of us to take full advantage of!!! Which really is the same thing that you're doing by documenting and sharing your adventures and builds with all of us now.
First time hearing the phrase dog house. More often, tunnel, shroud, cover. That was some work with tne bead roller. The vacuum assist must have took some thinking and doingung to fabricate. This will be one unique king cooper when finished.
HMMWVs we call them doghouses. We use the term when it’s been removable. We even use the term when there’s not an engine or trans underneath the doghouse. For example the older HEMTT inside the doghouse was the electrical and blower motor and was still referred to as the doghouse
You folks are absolutely crushing it. I am amazed at the progress and quality of work you’ve gotten done all while filming the entire build. Keep up the great work.
1:10 The "doghouse" is a van term. Pretty much all Dodge GM and Ford 150/1500 to 350/3500 vans have what is called a "doghouse" covering the rear of the engine inside the passenger compartment. This is due to the very short engine bay area out front. The larger Nissan NV series vans tried the long hood design, which to me is a better look.
The funny thing is that in Sweden, we used to call the old Mini Cooper "DogHouse". So before you started talking about the trans-tunnel, I acctually thought you were refering to the car itself.
All rear-wheel drive vehicles tend to have a Transmission Tunnel. The Doghouse, as I have known it was more characteristic of snub-nosed vans, RVs, and trucks that have access to the Engine from within the passenger compartment. It's an additional component that could look like a pet carrier or Dog House. A trans tunnel does not allow the driver to change the air cleaner or adjust the carburetor while driving down the highway.
Doghouses are actually removable cowlings that you will find in vans and r/v's and such where the best way to get to the engine is to remove the doghouse. OK... So after watching a little further I see that you have made it all removable. So now I would officially consider it a trans tunnel doubling as a doghouse. You kinda created both there sir. Excellent job btw.
I really enjoy watching your channel I also watch all the other ones Robbie Layton trail mater you guys are all awesome I'll watch you guys every day a lot
Respectively the only part of a vehicle's chassis referred to as a "Dog House" is the engine cover in larger vehicles. The transmission tunnel has always been just that...
I think the term "dog house" more commonly refers to the engine cover for vehicles that had the motor mounted between the front seats, such as the classic vans of days gone by. However, considering how large that cover is going to be in the Cooper, commandeer it for your own purposes!
nice job rudy! i just started watching your channel and im amazed the see youre better at fabricating than your pops haha the mini cooper is coming out sick!
FYI, the Ford electric vacuum pumps on their diesel trucks are way smaller an more cost effective to purchase along with being very easy to find in a pinch. Just food for future thought for you since I went the same way you have awhile ago. Hope this helps you down the road.
I'm definitely not a professional in the subject of a dog house but growing up I always hear it as referring to the vans and motorhomes where the entire engine is covered by a removable box cover

Still waters run deep...brace for impact!
Dog house to me has always been more vans, motorhomes, etc.
I was under the assumption that only fords had actual doghouses because they were the only trucks that had a removable opening. 🤷🏻♂️
@@3.0colorado21 anything that had a cab over style of body over engine, excluding Tractors, were generically called doghouses; it was the only way to actually get at the motor short of pulling it out.
To be a doghouse it's gotta be removable. All the fullsize vans in the 80s had them.
All of the above things and also when your gal is pissed.😂
And cab overs 😂
Rudy why not teach Zack how to use sheet metal bender and other equipment. That way he’ll be able to work without your supervision and you can focus on everything you need to do. Could you have Zack weld all the places that are only tacked?

Rudy, thank you for saying “regardless” at 4:20-ish instead of irregardless like so many Troglodytes out there.
Doghouse. Origin I believe came about when the concept of COE, cab over engine became a common terminology around big trucks. “ Dog House”.
Just a work of art. So talented

Huh.
The doghouse’s in all my Dad’s full size Chevy work vans covered the engine. The transmission was still under the floor.
