Just wanted to say I've been wondering for the longest time why so many UA-cam photographers like having access from the back and I believe your the first to explain that.. silly I know but thanks for the insight. Greer job as always.
It is obvious you have spent a lot of time in the field to really refine your kit. It definitely shows in your videos. Love your photos, keep up the great work. Best wishes for a great 2021. Looking forward to seeing more images from the film camera as well.
I’ve just sold my 55-200 in anticipation of the 70-300 (wanted to get in before market was flooded lol). I have toyed with the idea of the 50-140 for the past few months but as soon as I saw the 70-300 release price I was sold.
@@ian_worth If only life was simple! 70-300 looks initially great that weather resistant, and works with teleconverters. But then you spot its a little longer than the 55-200 and f/4.5 rather than f/3.5 on the 55-200. Right now I'm sticking with my 55-200 (and 50-150 with TC's).
When I had to decide between X-T3/X-T4 or X-H1 I took the X-H1 because it felt soooo gut in my hand. The ergonomics is perfect. Only the IBIS noise is annoying when you are out in silent nature. I then bought lighter outdoor clothes to compensate the weight of the camera :)
Huge bag 😮 … I carry one XT3 with a 40 mm Sigma on a wrist leash . A Viltrox 75 plus 2 extra batteries in my jacket and two power bars and a bottle of water in my pants back pocket . Good for a whole afternoon of shooting in the woods.
Ian, on the 50-140 - I had the 55-200 and for landscape found it troublesome so I switched to the 50-140 as soon as I could afford the upgrade. For me the key difference in the 50-140 isn't the f2.8 aperture, it's the internal focus and internal zoom. I use a filter holder system with square / rectangular filters. Adjusting the filters while mounted on the 55-200 can cause the front element to move in and out changing the focus point. Actions like aligning a grad filter or inserting your ND filters caused small changes which weren't overly apparent until I was back home editing.
Thanks, nice video. I agree with you about drones. A couple of years ago I was in the lakes at a popular spot. A guy was annoying people with his drone. When he crashed it into a tree there was a cheer from the onlookers. Poor bloke.
Thanks, Ian. Really helpful, especially about the lenses. I have the 55-200 and was thinking of changing to the 50-140 as the 55-200 seems to soften at longer focal lengths. Interesting to read the other comments made on this issue and am now waiting for reviews of the 70-300 before making a final decision.
I have the 50-140 great lens but for light weight landscapes 55-200 does the job for me. Everyone different nothing wrong with the love and hate of a Fuji lens.
I shoot with a 4x5 inch film landscape kit. I shoot with a 6x7 and 6x9cm medium format roll film kit. I shoot with a digital landscape kit. I have a 35mm landscape kit but I rarely use it. I have never tried combining any of my kits like you do.
Nice bit of kit there, I would love an XH1 but the main lens I’ve been using is the reliable 16mm f2.8 which would be so large for that lens 😂 I know the pain in losing RC signal with the drone, I lost the wife’s mavic mini in the recent snow we’ve had here in England!
Really interesting, Ian. Up till now, my lightweight hiking landscape trinity has been the 10-24, 18-55 and 55-200. Given you do weddings as well, I understand why you prefer the 50-140. I did some tests the other day with the 18-55, and felt that while it is a versatile and very competent lens, it doesn't touch my 35mm f/1.4 for sharpness, so will trial the 35mm instead of the 18-55 when I go out next. I am hoping the holes in the zoom range will not be an issue. I mention this, because as a wedding photographer, you may value a 35mm f/1.4 for shallow dof couple shots, which seems to be missing from your armoury. Just a thought.
For my weddings I'm using primes. The viltrox 23, 33 56 and 85. Just use the 50-140 for the long stuff. I never use the 18-55 for weddings, occasionally i use the 10-24 for room interiors 👍 My wedding bag looks very different to my landscape bag 👍👍
You seem dedicated to your Fuji cameras. I'm looking into a new full frame mirrorless. Do you prefer Fuji because of the weight savings (camera and lenses), or do you think the Fuji is better overall?
For your usecase I would probably swap the 50-140mm for the new 70-300mm (because of "WR" and longer reach than the 55-200mm, and even usable with the 1.4 tele-converter). Otherwise a very reasonable setup you have there - I love the 10-24mm for use in cities. I use it on the X-Pro3 (and have an X-E3 as backup). Have to get out the 18-55mm after all the praise you have for it!
Oh man, you prob don't sleep over night, right? How much does it all weight? I'm starting to nnotice the wieght of the backpack even with my XT4 and the "kit lens" (and other "photography stuff")
That 5x4 looks like a beautiful piece of work. Bravo! Regarding your telephoto zoom, have you perhaps thought about the xc 50-230? They’re pin-sharp, cheap as chips (especially second hand) and very light-weight and compact. Keep the 50-140 for the pro work and let the 50-230 be the tele-zoom for out in the field? Not weather-sealed, but then neither is the 55-200.
Nice vid, Ian. My travel kit consists of the XH1, the 10-24 f/4, the 16-55 f/2.8 and, for low light shots, the 23mm f/1.4. I shoot mostly wide and I found that during travel my 55-200 did not get enough mileage.
thanks for very nice video, glad to see all the gears.. I am also thinking to change my camera, as a pretty new youtube photography creator. currently using X-T2 and film cameras, and thinking which one should I get ( add X-S10 or changed to T4..)...
What tripods do you use? Mavic Air 2 fixed the range/disconnect issues, but you have to deal with carrying a bigger controller (although that controller does have a much bigger battery)
Cracking vid Ian some lovely kit that large format is a thing a real beauty. Personally for the paper I use canon gear in my own time I have Nikon for sports work a fuji X100f for all sorts I just love it I have a bronica ETRSi that is a pleasure to use I have a Minolta 9 35mm slr just a beast I have an old oly range finder too I really can’t say which is my fave if pushed for ease of use and pleasure the x100f is a dream to use for the channel I record video on a canon M50 with the cheapo kit lens which isn’t actually too bad. Drone wise I have a spark getting on a bit now but does what I need for now. Think I need to try large format before I get too old to carry it 🤪📷
Thanks for sharing mate, I switched to Fuji two years ago, I have the XT30 AND THE 18-55 AND 55-200 and love them, I will invest in a second body but waiting for XT40 or XH2, should have bought the 10-24, but the new 70-300 looks awesome and can be used with the tele converters.
Another great watch Ian thank you! Having just acquired an X-T3 I now have the same stills setup as you along with the X-H1 which has been an absolute workhorse for me. I had the 55-200 (sold in anticipation of the 70-300) and did try two copies of the 50-140 both of which left me underwhelmed. I was either caught in the hype and expected too much from it or I was just unlucky enough to receive two bad copies but neither were an improvement over my 55-200 - in fact one of them was arguably worse. I know it’s off topic a bit but I’d be interested to know what you use as your wedding setup. Is it just the 50-140? Although not as versatile I found that the 50-140 doesn’t hold a candle to the 90mm f2 which I mostly used, combined with either the 23 f1.4 or the 50mm f2.
Hi Gareth, for weddings, currently I'm using the Viltrox primes, 23, 33,56,85 and the 50-140 if I need more reach. I also take the Fuji 35mmf2 for back up and the 10-24 for room interiors. 👍👍
If you could have just one between xt3 and xh1, for landscape photography only, which one and why? I am switching from Sony and can not decide between the two :(
There's a 70-300mm coming out in the very near future, so might be worth waiting for that if you want to get a new lens. Only down side of that lens is that it's not weather resistant. Still, a lot smaller and lighter though...
It is a WR lens, and it accepts the teleconvertors. I am replacing my 55-200mm with the 70-300mm pending real world reviews, because it weighs the same for more focal length. The physical dimensions are the same except I think 2cm longer. Really hoping it is a great performer.
@@InvertedHermit If the image samples from real-world production lens reviews match the pre-production samples I've seen, it is absolutely a no-brainer, especially as it pairs nicely with the 16-80mm.
