I too am a self-taught artist “outsider” but I think if the art works it works. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I usually paint until I like it them sign it lol
It's neither raw genius..nor scam. It is simply on its own for its own sake. Outsider art is done to the satisfaction of the artist regardless of any viewers. Yes..if you've had any formal training or exposure to art training you've just been excluded from being the outsider artist category. Outsider means just that, not part of any art instruction of any kind. Self taught and individualistic. If a outsider artist stumbles upon a existing technique that is to be expected, but NO systematic instruction. If you've picked up a art instruction book from hobby lobby..poof! Your no longer outsider...if you mimicked Bob Ross on PBS back in the day..zap! Your no longer outsider. Outsider is independent, seeking expression or impression by usage of preferred materials expressed solely by that person's "innate" drive to create. No purposely guided influence from the "established" art academia.

My own mother is an outsider artist. She's pretty much eccentric. From her early life she was never like anyone else from what I gather...from stories, pictures and even super 8 film I've seen of her when she was young. I've had that influence growing up but my initial artistic nature was strongly rooted in classical forms...or that's what I preferred early on. I'm now more or less in both worlds creatively speaking. I prefer both worlds. I don't feel like I am ever making an excuse for brut, naive or outsider art and artists in terms of their legitimacy or abilities. You have to understand that many of these artists, like my mother, are simply 'on' and 'coming from' a different wavelength or set of mental and emotional dispositions than most other people. We have to enter their world as best we can to try to see it from their perspective through their art. They're not trying to deviate on purpose in many cases but simply striving to manifest a powerful internal urge to create. I feel that brut art is the most sincere art that there is. I often feel that to evaluate and or judge brut art from the same criteria of representational or classical forms is a waste of time really. You can't expect a cat to bark like a dog or a dog to give birth to a cat so I think people's tendency is to approach and evaluate it from the wrong or even biased standpoint. It's easy to do...we're human. But we're also reasoning beings, so try that faculty sometimes (is what I suggest to naysayers). Myself, I can be an 'abstract' artist all day long but, I can never truly be an 'outsider artist' simply because I was not born that way. There are some really good videos on YT about outsider art and artists I'll suggest. Maybe you or your viewers might enjoy them if you haven't already seen them. There's a series called 'Journeys Into The Outside' by Jarvis Cocker. Also, 'Turning The Art World Inside Out' with Alan Yentob. And there are some snippets of a series produced by Kansas City Public Television (KCPTV) through the 90s and 00s called, 'Rare Visions And Roadside Revelations' where these three guys travelled all over the US looking for roadside, outsider, folk, brut..you name it art attractions. My mother was featured on one of their videos back in 2005. You can also still find the DVDs on Ebay or like places once in a while.

I was first introduced to Outsider Art when I was drawn to a Purvis Young painting in a junk store. I purchased it. I loved the crude materials that were used to create it. He had a 'compulsion' to create. Purvis painted on and with anything he could get his hands on. That is part of what I see in outsider art. I have seen some of the best art ever - it can be found at County Fairs - where the children's art from all over the city is shown! Paper towel collages, milk cartons, garden hoses - it's all there! Enjoyed watching how you put this piece of art together. Had no idea where you were going with it until it all came together. That is also what kept it interesting. No rules.
I have 0 education apart from school. 0 education in art. However, in my 20s I have discovered I love to paint. I have spoken to people who have described my work as "naive". I had never heard this term prior which led me here. I truly don't care for learning to be an amazing artist for anyone but myself. I just enjoy painting and learning my own techniques :) would that make me an "outsider" because I don't don't particularly consider myself an artist at all?
Well, making a guess from what you've shared here, I'd say yes, you probably fall into the category of Naive or Outsider art. Mainly because you're self-taught and making art for yourself with no concern for selling or labeling it. As i understand outsider, its neither raw genius nor scam. Outsider artist make art for themselve and themselve only, they didnt do it for fame or anything, they did it because they wanted for themselves. Academic definition seems wrong since every human being have been thought art at least once in their lifetime and outsider artist clearly influenced by other famous artist. Academic world limit too much and complicated too much. Outsider never classified themselve as outsider artist, its other people classified them as outsider artist. So in short, i never thought there is exist any outsider artist. People classifies outsider because they saw an art not for themselves, but for the artist only, making them as an outsider, a stranger to the art itself.

You're totally correct: It's what we do. We create. Even people who don't think they do, do on some level. A chef, a real estate "staging" expert, an event organizer, a good teacher (I've had some who made learning fascinating-that's a real art). Good video and I enjoyed the results. :)
An acquaintance told me I was the authentic and unpretentious form of this movement. Or am I? I live with a mental illness. I have bipolarism, dissociative identity disorder, avoidant personality disorder and suicidal behavior. I don't have a job (I couldn't keep one), I'm unmarried, I don't have kids, I only have one friend and I'm estranged from my family. I live alone for many years, only going out to buy groceries. I create artworks so that I won't kill myself. Art is the only outlet preventing me from suicide. I don't want people to see any of it because it reflects the insanity I'm in. The only way anyone will see my art is if they will visit my place which is next to impossible. I don't like social interactions. My sister once visited and told me why I don't post my artworks online or make a profit out of it. But I don't want to sell my creations, why should I sell something that I've shed loads of time and effort to make? It's for me, for my mental health. But the thing is, I went to art school. I have a Fine Arts university degree in the best art school in my country. You know those child geniuses who can play the piano, guitar etc at the age of 5. That was me when it comes to art. I was creating photo realistic artworks when I was in kindergarten. That's what pushed me to go to art school in college, people say I was a child prodigy. Despite my chaotic, suicidal personality, I'm very good in art and it prevented me from killing myself. Me going to art university is what makes me think if I fall under this category.
The label outsider art has more to do with how the artist is FOUND in my opinion. An outsider artist is typically one who was found grown COMPLETELY outside of the art world as we know it. It also seems to always include artists who are creating with basically no prior knowledge of how to make art "correctly" or "professionally". However I think there's nothing that actually seperates these artists from other artists. The media likes to make out outsider artists as these blissfully ignorant individuals who don't even REALIZE they are doing what they are doing. But this isn't really always true. A lot of outsider artists are just... Making art in the way they know how. Same as anyone else. I'd imagine some outsider artists actually have A LOT of knowledge about art tho, but just no applied knowledge.

I am not a classically trained artist so I guess I fall into the category of outsider art. I just love to paint. I believe that if you produce something that gives not only pleasure to oneself but that others appreciate its beauty, then you’ve succeeded.
Hello. I remember creating art in my art class when I was little. I also had coloring books. I had a spirograph set that I enjoyed very much. I still use today as well. I like your work. It's very nice. I enjoy art very much, but don't care much about the artist's private lives. I think that was their business what ever they did in private. I just like any type of art. My art work is different as well. I like it that way.😊
Dude, I really dig this one. I was the same... if there wasn’t technical prowess in the art, I thought it was garbage. I was thinking all this about visual art while I was applying the definitions of outsider art to the punk bands I was playing in. In that world, I hated polished, “well” produced, and/or music from proficient musicians. I didn’t think that it was authentic unless it was raw and came from your heart and crotch. I’m not sure exactly when I realized I was being a total hypocrite, but something clicked. I love abstract/brut/outsider art now. I feel like I get it, in that for me, it has become a visual representation of my preferred style (Reagan era hardcore punk and thrash) of playing punk rock... for lack of a better analogy. It’s raw and comes from the heart and crotch. Visceral and charged. See you in the pit!

I guess art is either one of self-expression, documenting (landscapes, e.g., - real or fantasy) or the combination, which can lead to many different variations, and therefore encompasses anything that we create for ourselves and/or others. Some do it seriously, while others do it for the feeling from doing it. What is art should be like asking, “what it life?” IT’S ALL ART. Some we like and respect, some we don’t. What is art? Art is Humanity - the good, the bad and the ugly.
The question isn't really whether or not 'outsider art' has value as a broad category. A lot of 'outsider artists' have been geniuses. Van Gogh falls into this category; he had almost no formal training, sold only one painting in his lifetime, paid no attention to prevalent trends, and suffered from both alcoholism and numerous psychiatric disorders but painted purely from a manic compulsion to paint. I could consider myself an outsider artist because I'm mostly self taught, have no real interest in current trends and am detached from mainstream art society. But 'outsider art' is often conflated with 'naive art' and I've studied a lot of art history, follow the rules whenever I want to, and know exactly what I'm doing. The thing with Banksy, whether or not he's knowingly a scammer or in earnest, is that his stuff is crap. He is primarily a postmodern artist, and most postmodernism is worthless, aside from its inflated value to criminals involved in money laundering. He has no vision whatsoever, has mediocre skill, and his stuff has nothing to say, is passe and dull to look at. I don't see him as an 'outsider' in any way at all. His work is emblematic of what is passed off as art on a routine basis by an establishment run by postmodern ideologues. The only real 'outsider' artists nowadays are the talented artists doing their own thing who know exactly what they're doing, who are facing a wall of philistinism in the current establishment. and who are too talented to catch a break.
You might want to explore mail art. It is free of most of the negatives of official art, but satisfies the desire to be seen. And it would make for good content.

Out of the hundreds, if not thousands of ART videos I've seen in my life, this is the best so far. Nice job. Interestingly, although the piece you created here would qualify as "outsider", it is indeed successful because it utilizes many of the traditional art principals. You used color theory, balance, harmony, unity and variation as well as texture and value contrast. Those things are what humans innately recognize as beauty when it comes to visual art and to some extent, dance, music, film, etc. And even though "outsider" art is unorthodox, an artist will implement those traditional principals because that's what we artists do.
Out of the tens of comments I get every week, this is the best so far! Seriously though, thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave such an insightful comment- I really appreciate it. I think what you're describing here (with which I agree) is the exact problem I was trying to work through in the video: Can someone knowingly, purposefully TRY to make Outsider Art? Although I like how the painting turned out, and I was able to incorporate some of the ideas and aesthetics of what people traditionally call Outsider, I don't think I was successful in capturing the Outsider Mindset. I know too much about the "rules of art" and subconsciously, they crept in. Thanks again.
Picasso was soooo goooood on painting somehow realistically when he was young. Though we human as we get older, do you notice how life became more abstracted? Picasso's art evolution is the best example. Nice work btw sensei. Outsider artist are beasts on coming up with colors, shapes and outlines.

I love this subjet and I agreed with you totally! I found my own way to create, I call it "subtle art" because my art emerge from a meditative state of mind, and like you, the painting or warever made by itself, you only need to let it go. The process It´s so satisfiying may be not the result! hahaha. I study art, but I hate all these process. Teachers didn´t like manga drawing or your personal style and make awful deccisions about your art, and put you a 5 or 10 at your "abstrac" drawing... And never teach me about textile art (who is my main subjet now). Art Schools are very limited about creativity and original techniques. Now, I´m be able to FOUND MY OWN technique and art style (or lack of style), and I feel free.
All well and good then, art colleges in the UK. have their own agenda anyway which alienates the very people that fund the colleges, the tax payer, the whole thing's crazy

I feel that the idea that some art is ingenuous and other art is just crap goes against the whole notion of outsider art. To me at least outsider art is about what is good and what's not. To me outsider at just screams "art is art that's it". There is nothing to discuss when it comes to the quality of the piece cause at the end of the day its just art. The fact that outsider art can sell for so much is both amazing and disturbing, to me it almost devalues the art itself. I think that the only thing that should matter when it comes to art is how it makes you feel not how big the price tag is. Of course its gonna be subjective that's what makes art so amazing. If I wanted objectiveness I would go to the sciences not art. When people think of what got us through history a lot of people think of the sciences, but nobody gives art the recondition it deserves. I would argue art was and still is just as important as the sciences. Artist are the unofficial and subjective record keepers. They are what gives us a glimpse into what the artist felt at the time the piece was made. The Idea that a picture is worth a million words holds true when it comes to art. Personally I have always struggled with making art of any kind as I have really bad anxiety and am afraid people would hate it and the idea of outsider art kind of relieves that stress. It makes me wanna write a song or draw. I'm my humble opinion that is the beauty of outsider art. Also I like the desert island metaphor you gave, idk what about it I liked so much but it was good. Sorry if I was rambling and what I said above made no sense. I already knew about outsider art before watching this video. I really apricate art and the people who make it. Even if I dont personally like the work I still have a lot of respect for artist. Outsider art is art made by people who have no training or went to art school. Their work is good, if not better. Going to art school, you learn someone else's ideas. These people have raw talent. I am an outside artist. I have no shame for it. You have no idea of the real definition of outside arr.

I'd think "insider" art is deemed to be "immediately" and generally marketable because the artists have a track record developed over time, i.e., what sells is the name... and _because_ names sell, a _celebrity_ can jump the line. Example: Bob Dylan's paintings (as pedestrian and bereft of singular style IMHO) are projected (!!!) to sell well because -- ta daaaa! -- he was already famous.
From the perspective of someone relatively disconnected from art (only very surface level comprehension of style, genre and technique), I'd say art is about communication. The respect for modes of communication is important to me. If you create and break rules while doing it, I'd respect it more if it was consciously done than totally naive. That's why I watch people trained in art on youtube - for better understanding. I do get the desire for pure art though. During my English degree, my writing professor forced (going as far as fill in the blanks) a certain writing style on me. Other professors only allowed for one right answer in analysis. It caused me to become totally disillusioned with writing for a long time. So maybe now I'd write a break those bs rules, but I'd know I'd be breaking them.

I'm an outsider too. Being an "Artist" wasn't even an option for my parents, so I had to learn everything by myself. I don't have an academic training either. There are many political debates behind these artistic classifications (they started with the rise of the Impressionists in the 19th century) involving, roughly, those who hate the "bourgeois" values of the West againts those who want to learn and follow a centuries old tradition. I want to stay away from it. You have no idea how violent and hateful these controversies can be, here in France... It's crazy. Personnaly, I want to absorb the technics of the old masters to the point where I don't have to think about them anymore... and then, maybe ignore these technics. Generaly speaking, I like abstract Art, but I prefer to create figurative Art. When I was younger I didn't understand outsider or abstract art. I do understand the appeal now and I'm a fan of both, but I'm with you- I prefer to create figurative art. Damn, I knew I was pronouncing Jean-Michel's name wrong. 🙃 I thought the "t" was silent too, but then I heard other people in documentary movies pronouncing it with a hard "t" and I thought they were right. I think there is a miscommunication about what "self taught" means in outsider art context. It doesn't point to a lack of degrees and such, it points to whether you are conforming to the art principals by design. Of course incidentally fallowing those principals will happen, after all these are basics of what "looks good". Outsider artists neither adopt nor eschew these principals. They just plainly don't give a fuck. This also brings us to intent about audiences. While people like Henry Dargar and James Hampton slaved away in obscurity, people like the band Shaggs and Daniel Johnston actively distributed there work (well more or less) and nobody can deny their outsider artist status. Shaggs was started with an expressed intent of fulfilling the prophecy of becoming famous. The artist relationship with audiences is entirely personal and I think outsider artist definition should be entirely decoupled from that.

The end result speaks for itself, if an art piece speaks to a person they’ll buy it. The line between professional and scammer in modern art is a dotted line, sometimes in order to sell you have to tell the customer what they want to hear. There’s more creativity in selling this kind of stuff, then what actually went into the pieces. Basquiat Is the face of luck and squandered opportunity.

If they like it, or are challenged by it, they will want to see/know more, and perhaps become a fan of the artist.
the nuance for me is the difference between art and craft.. sure you can have training and the theory of western canon in your pinky, but it doesn’t mean your art will resonate with people.. oh, wait a minute, they always told us that you ‘have to understand’ art so dumb people cannot appreciate it.. it’s for the finest of us.. you cannot buy a pile of candy in the corner for $3 million dollars, you don’t even know it’s called postmodern.. but we are now in metamodern times, and with unprecedented free internet speech line between real and crap is a complete blur pretty much in everything.. but not in art, creating of visual expressions have no boundaries and NO ONE can tell you it’s good or bad.. you DON’T have to understand a damn thing.. it’s only about the resonance of your senses with art.. some raw art is better than some trained one, and opposite, artists are known and expensive bc they are branded like in everything, trained and raw, rubens like basquiat.. here is the real freedom without boundaries.. and ALL should create

Brilliant comment! Anything can be art, it's about expressing a feeling or thought or it may be totally visceral. It's not about training or technical skills or how long it took or how much effort went into creating something. So many fall into the trap of the good or bad label, when the question should be, do I like it or does it make me feel something? I think many people are angry at the art market & the prices that works, they don't understand or like, bring in auction or galleries. That's a whole other world that exists because of greed & for exploitation. I also think it's arrogant to say that outsider art or art brut is created by bad artists trying to exploit a trend. Is there really such a lucrative market for this style? No! And to additionally say that post modern art is rubbish is terribly short sighted. Everyone is free to feel & believe as they choose. The only question that is valid is do I like something or not. A lot of great comments on this video, which is refreshing, whether I agree or disagree!

@@Lollero200q Maybe the appreciation for different styles of art is something that comes with age and experience. In many cases, exciting or interesting art is more enjoyable than technically great art in my opinion.
Genius or a scam? I have not watched the video but usually this is a rhetorical question. The author has already decided that it is a scam. The truth is more nuanced: it can be either, plus a lot of earnest bad art.
Spoilers: I used to think it was a scam when I was much younger, but I changed my mind. If you take a few minutes to read through the comments, there are quite a few people with really great ideas on the topic. (And presented much more eloquently than I did in the video.) Have a great day.

That said, please note that although they are often lumped together and the terms used indistinctly, strictly speaking outsider art is not the same as art naif, art brut or primitive art. You and I can make art brut. We cannot make outsider art, which is by definition the art made by society OUTSIDERS with an urge to express themselves. Often mentally ill, or isolated from society for some reason, they usually have little or no art training or knowledge of art history, and live and make art in a world of their own. They do not much care to show or sell their work, when they do it is usually prompted by others. I am a painter, and I could fake outsider art, but it would be a lie. Actually, a lot of so-called outsider artists are phonies, mediocre mainstream artists faking it.The best way to market your work if you have little skill and talent is to promote it as outsider art. Maybe they came up with this strategy, maybe their marchands and galleries did. Some of my favourite outside artists: Henry Darger, Bill Traylor, Carlo Zinelli, Adolf Wolfli, Martín Ramírez, Arthur Bispo do Rosário, Raúl Javiel Cabrera (Cabrerita). Look them up and you will see what I am talking about. Cheers.
Well said, Aquelpibe. I came to the same conclusion in making the video: I can't make "Outsider Art" because I know better- it would be a fake. All I can do is try to channel some of the unbridled spirit and raw energy of the real thing.

It's neither raw genius..nor scam. It is simply on its own for its own sake. Outsider art is done to the satisfaction of the artist regardless of any viewers. Yes..if you've had any formal training or exposure to art training you've just been excluded from being the outsider artist category. Outsider means just that, not part of any art instruction of any kind. Self taught and individualistic. If a outsider artist stumbles upon a existing technique that is to be expected, but NO systematic instruction. If you've picked up a art instruction book from hobby lobby..poof! Your no longer outsider...if you mimicked Bob Ross on PBS back in the day..zap! Your no longer outsider. Outsider is independent, seeking expression or impression by usage of preferred materials expressed solely by that person's "innate" drive to create. No purposely guided influence from the "established" art academia.

My own mother is an outsider artist. She's pretty much eccentric. From her early life she was never like anyone else from what I gather...from stories, pictures and even super 8 film I've seen of her when she was young. I've had that influence growing up but my initial artistic nature was strongly rooted in classical forms...or that's what I preferred early on. I'm now more or less in both worlds creatively speaking. I prefer both worlds. I don't feel like I am ever making an excuse for brut, naive or outsider art and artists in terms of their legitimacy or abilities. You have to understand that many of these artists, like my mother, are simply 'on' and 'coming from' a different wavelength or set of mental and emotional dispositions than most other people. We have to enter their world as best we can to try to see it from their perspective through their art. They're not trying to deviate on purpose in many cases but simply striving to manifest a powerful internal urge to create. I feel that brut art is the most sincere art that there is. I often feel that to evaluate and or judge brut art from the same criteria of representational or classical forms is a waste of time really. You can't expect a cat to bark like a dog or a dog to give birth to a cat so I think people's tendency is to approach and evaluate it from the wrong or even biased standpoint. It's easy to do...we're human. But we're also reasoning beings, so try that faculty sometimes (is what I suggest to naysayers). Myself, I can be an 'abstract' artist all day long but, I can never truly be an 'outsider artist' simply because I was not born that way.
There are some really good videos on YT about outsider art and artists I'll suggest. Maybe you or your viewers might enjoy them if you haven't already seen them. There's a series called 'Journeys Into The Outside' by Jarvis Cocker. Also, 'Turning The Art World Inside Out' with Alan Yentob. And there are some snippets of a series produced by Kansas City Public Television (KCPTV) through the 90s and 00s called, 'Rare Visions And Roadside Revelations' where these three guys travelled all over the US looking for roadside, outsider, folk, brut..you name it art attractions. My mother was featured on one of their videos back in 2005. You can also still find the DVDs on Ebay or like places once in a while.

I was first introduced to Outsider Art when I was drawn to a Purvis Young painting in a junk store. I purchased it. I loved the crude materials that were used to create it. He had a 'compulsion' to create. Purvis painted on and with anything he could get his hands on. That is part of what I see in outsider art. I have seen some of the best art ever - it can be found at County Fairs - where the children's art from all over the city is shown! Paper towel collages, milk cartons, garden hoses - it's all there! Enjoyed watching how you put this piece of art together. Had no idea where you were going with it until it all came together. That is also what kept it interesting. No rules.

I have 0 education apart from school. 0 education in art. However, in my 20s I have discovered I love to paint. I have spoken to people who have described my work as "naive". I had never heard this term prior which led me here. I truly don't care for learning to be an amazing artist for anyone but myself. I just enjoy painting and learning my own techniques :) would that make me an "outsider" because I don't don't particularly consider myself an artist at all?
Well, making a guess from what you've shared here, I'd say yes, you probably fall into the category of Naive or Outsider art. Mainly because you're self-taught and making art for yourself with no concern for selling or labeling it. As i understand outsider, its neither raw genius nor scam. Outsider artist make art for themselve and themselve only, they didnt do it for fame or anything, they did it because they wanted for themselves. Academic definition seems wrong since every human being have been thought art at least once in their lifetime and outsider artist clearly influenced by other famous artist. Academic world limit too much and complicated too much. Outsider never classified themselve as outsider artist, its other people classified them as outsider artist.
So in short, i never thought there is exist any outsider artist. People classifies outsider because they saw an art not for themselves, but for the artist only, making them as an outsider, a stranger to the art itself.

You're totally correct: It's what we do. We create. Even people who don't think they do, do on some level. A chef, a real estate "staging" expert, an event organizer, a good teacher (I've had some who made learning fascinating-that's a real art). Good video and I enjoyed the results. :)

An acquaintance told me I was the authentic and unpretentious form of this movement. Or am I?
I live with a mental illness. I have bipolarism, dissociative identity disorder, avoidant personality disorder and suicidal behavior. I don't have a job (I couldn't keep one), I'm unmarried, I don't have kids, I only have one friend and I'm estranged from my family. I live alone for many years, only going out to buy groceries. I create artworks so that I won't kill myself. Art is the only outlet preventing me from suicide. I don't want people to see any of it because it reflects the insanity I'm in. The only way anyone will see my art is if they will visit my place which is next to impossible. I don't like social interactions. My sister once visited and told me why I don't post my artworks online or make a profit out of it. But I don't want to sell my creations, why should I sell something that I've shed loads of time and effort to make? It's for me, for my mental health.
But the thing is, I went to art school. I have a Fine Arts university degree in the best art school in my country. You know those child geniuses who can play the piano, guitar etc at the age of 5. That was me when it comes to art. I was creating photo realistic artworks when I was in kindergarten. That's what pushed me to go to art school in college, people say I was a child prodigy. Despite my chaotic, suicidal personality, I'm very good in art and it prevented me from killing myself.
Me going to art university is what makes me think if I fall under this category.

The label outsider art has more to do with how the artist is FOUND in my opinion. An outsider artist is typically one who was found grown COMPLETELY outside of the art world as we know it. It also seems to always include artists who are creating with basically no prior knowledge of how to make art "correctly" or "professionally".
However I think there's nothing that actually seperates these artists from other artists. The media likes to make out outsider artists as these blissfully ignorant individuals who don't even REALIZE they are doing what they are doing. But this isn't really always true. A lot of outsider artists are just... Making art in the way they know how. Same as anyone else. I'd imagine some outsider artists actually have A LOT of knowledge about art tho, but just no applied knowledge.

Dude, I really dig this one. I was the same... if there wasn’t technical prowess in the art, I thought it was garbage. I was thinking all this about visual art while I was applying the definitions of outsider art to the punk bands I was playing in. In that world, I hated polished, “well” produced, and/or music from proficient musicians. I didn’t think that it was authentic unless it was raw and came from your heart and crotch. I’m not sure exactly when I realized I was being a total hypocrite, but something clicked. I love abstract/brut/outsider art now. I feel like I get it, in that for me, it has become a visual representation of my preferred style (Reagan era hardcore punk and thrash) of playing punk rock... for lack of a better analogy. It’s raw and comes from the heart and crotch. Visceral and charged. See you in the pit!
EXACTLY! That's why I asked myself the question, "Does outsider art cover all aspects of the arts?" Music is the perfect example- especially punk and hardcore. You get it! The music comparison is another reason I'm putting more of the "outsider" edge back into my every day style of art moving forward. 🤘🏼

I guess art is either one of self-expression, documenting (landscapes, e.g., - real or fantasy) or the combination, which can lead to many different variations, and therefore encompasses anything that we create for ourselves and/or others.
Some do it seriously, while others do it for the feeling from doing it.

The question isn't really whether or not 'outsider art' has value as a broad category. A lot of 'outsider artists' have been geniuses. Van Gogh falls into this category; he had almost no formal training, sold only one painting in his lifetime, paid no attention to prevalent trends, and suffered from both alcoholism and numerous psychiatric disorders but painted purely from a manic compulsion to paint. I could consider myself an outsider artist because I'm mostly self taught, have no real interest in current trends and am detached from mainstream art society. But 'outsider art' is often conflated with 'naive art' and I've studied a lot of art history, follow the rules whenever I want to, and know exactly what I'm doing. The thing with Banksy, whether or not he's knowingly a scammer or in earnest, is that his stuff is crap. He is primarily a postmodern artist, and most postmodernism is worthless, aside from its inflated value to criminals involved in money laundering. He has no vision whatsoever, has mediocre skill, and his stuff has nothing to say, is passe and dull to look at. I don't see him as an 'outsider' in any way at all. His work is emblematic of what is passed off as art on a routine basis by an establishment run by postmodern ideologues. The only real 'outsider' artists nowadays are the talented artists doing their own thing who know exactly what they're doing, who are facing a wall of philistinism in the current establishment. and who are too talented to catch a break.

Out of the hundreds, if not thousands of ART videos I've seen in my life, this is the best so far. Nice job. Interestingly, although the piece you created here would qualify as "outsider", it is indeed successful because it utilizes many of the traditional art principals. You used color theory, balance, harmony, unity and variation as well as texture and value contrast. Those things are what humans innately recognize as beauty when it comes to visual art and to some extent, dance, music, film, etc. And even though "outsider" art is unorthodox, an artist will implement those traditional principals because that's what we artists do.
Out of the tens of comments I get every week, this is the best so far! Seriously though, thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave such an insightful comment- I really appreciate it.
I think what you're describing here (with which I agree) is the exact problem I was trying to work through in the video: Can someone knowingly, purposefully TRY to make Outsider Art?
Although I like how the painting turned out, and I was able to incorporate some of the ideas and aesthetics of what people traditionally call Outsider, I don't think I was successful in capturing the Outsider Mindset. I know too much about the "rules of art" and subconsciously, they crept in.

Picasso was soooo goooood on painting somehow realistically when he was young. Though we human as we get older, do you notice how life became more abstracted? Picasso's art evolution is the best example. Nice work btw sensei. Outsider artist are beasts on coming up with colors, shapes and outlines.

I love this subjet and I agreed with you totally! I found my own way to create, I call it "subtle art" because my art emerge from a meditative state of mind, and like you, the painting or warever made by itself, you only need to let it go. The process It´s so satisfiying may be not the result! hahaha. I study art, but I hate all these process. Teachers didn´t like manga drawing or your personal style and make awful deccisions about your art, and put you a 5 or 10 at your "abstrac" drawing... And never teach me about textile art (who is my main subjet now). Art Schools are very limited about creativity and original techniques. Now, I´m be able to FOUND MY OWN technique and art style (or lack of style), and I feel free.

I feel that the idea that some art is ingenuous and other art is just crap goes against the whole notion of outsider art. To me at least outsider art is about what is good and what's not. To me outsider at just screams "art is art that's it". There is nothing to discuss when it comes to the quality of the piece cause at the end of the day its just art. The fact that outsider art can sell for so much is both amazing and disturbing, to me it almost devalues the art itself. I think that the only thing that should matter when it comes to art is how it makes you feel not how big the price tag is. Of course its gonna be subjective that's what makes art so amazing. If I wanted objectiveness I would go to the sciences not art. When people think of what got us through history a lot of people think of the sciences, but nobody gives art the recondition it deserves. I would argue art was and still is just as important as the sciences. Artist are the unofficial and subjective record keepers. They are what gives us a glimpse into what the artist felt at the time the piece was made. The Idea that a picture is worth a million words holds true when it comes to art. Personally I have always struggled with making art of any kind as I have really bad anxiety and am afraid people would hate it and the idea of outsider art kind of relieves that stress. It makes me wanna write a song or draw. I'm my humble opinion that is the beauty of outsider art. Also I like the desert island metaphor you gave, idk what about it I liked so much but it was good.

I'd think "insider" art is deemed to be "immediately" and generally marketable because the artists have a track record developed over time, i.e., what sells is the name... and _because_ names sell, a _celebrity_ can jump the line. Example: Bob Dylan's paintings (as pedestrian and bereft of singular style IMHO) are projected (!!!) to sell well because -- ta daaaa! -- he was already famous.

From the perspective of someone relatively disconnected from art (only very surface level comprehension of style, genre and technique), I'd say art is about communication. The respect for modes of communication is important to me. If you create and break rules while doing it, I'd respect it more if it was consciously done than totally naive. That's why I watch people trained in art on youtube - for better understanding. I do get the desire for pure art though. During my English degree, my writing professor forced (going as far as fill in the blanks) a certain writing style on me. Other professors only allowed for one right answer in analysis. It caused me to become totally disillusioned with writing for a long time. So maybe now I'd write a break those bs rules, but I'd know I'd be breaking them.

I'm an outsider too. Being an "Artist" wasn't even an option for my parents, so I had to learn everything by myself. I don't have an academic training either.
There are many political debates behind these artistic classifications (they started with the rise of the Impressionists in the 19th century) involving, roughly, those who hate the "bourgeois" values of the West againts those who want to learn and follow a centuries old tradition. I want to stay away from it. You have no idea how violent and hateful these controversies can be, here in France... It's crazy.
Personnaly, I want to absorb the technics of the old masters to the point where I don't have to think about them anymore... and then, maybe ignore these technics. Generaly speaking, I like abstract Art, but I prefer to create figurative Art.

As a rule of thumb, consonants are silent at the end of French names. So "Basquiat" should be pronounced "Baskya". (and if you like Star Trek, "Picard" should be pronunced "Pikar")
Wow, I didn't know art controversies could be that hostile in France- thanks for the heads up. People get pretty heated about it here in the US as well. When I was younger I didn't understand outsider or abstract art. I do understand the appeal now and I'm a fan of both, but I'm with you- I prefer to create figurative art.

I think there is a miscommunication about what "self taught" means in outsider art context. It doesn't point to a lack of degrees and such, it points to whether you are conforming to the art principals by design. Of course incidentally fallowing those principals will happen, after all these are basics of what "looks good". Outsider artists neither adopt nor eschew these principals. They just plainly don't give a fuck.
This also brings us to intent about audiences. While people like Henry Dargar and James Hampton slaved away in obscurity, people like the band Shaggs and Daniel Johnston actively distributed there work (well more or less) and nobody can deny their outsider artist status. Shaggs was started with an expressed intent of fulfilling the prophecy of becoming famous.
The artist relationship with audiences is entirely personal and I think outsider artist definition should be entirely decoupled from that.

The line between professional and scammer in modern art is a dotted line, sometimes in order to sell you have to tell the customer what they want to hear. There’s more creativity in selling this kind of stuff, then what actually went into the pieces. Basquiat Is the face of luck and squandered opportunity.

the nuance for me is the difference between art and craft.. sure you can have training and the theory of western canon in your pinky, but it doesn’t mean your art will resonate with people.. oh, wait a minute, they always told us that you ‘have to understand’ art so dumb people cannot appreciate it.. it’s for the finest of us.. you cannot buy a pile of candy in the corner for $3 million dollars, you don’t even know it’s called postmodern.. but we are now in metamodern times, and with unprecedented free internet speech line between real and crap is a complete blur pretty much in everything.. but not in art, creating of visual expressions have no boundaries and NO ONE can tell you it’s good or bad.. you DON’T have to understand a damn thing.. it’s only about the resonance of your senses with art.. some raw art is better than some trained one, and opposite, artists are known and expensive bc they are branded like in everything, trained and raw, rubens like basquiat.. here is the real freedom without boundaries.. and ALL should create

Brilliant comment! Anything can be art, it's about expressing a feeling or thought or it may be totally visceral. It's not about training or technical skills or how long it took or how much effort went into creating something. So many fall into the trap of the good or bad label, when the question should be, do I like it or does it make me feel something? I think many people are angry at the art market & the prices that works, they don't understand or like, bring in auction or galleries. That's a whole other world that exists because of greed & for exploitation.
I also think it's arrogant to say that outsider art or art brut is created by bad artists trying to exploit a trend. Is there really such a lucrative market for this style? No! And to additionally say that post modern art is rubbish is terribly short sighted. Everyone is free to feel & believe as they choose. The only question that is valid is do I like something or not.

Genius or a scam? I have not watched the video but usually this is a rhetorical question. The author has already decided that it is a scam. The truth is more nuanced: it can be either, plus a lot of earnest bad art.
Spoilers: I used to think it was a scam when I was much younger, but I changed my mind. If you take a few minutes to read through the comments, there are quite a few people with really great ideas on the topic. (And presented much more eloquently than I did in the video.) Have a great day.

That said, please note that although they are often lumped together and the terms used indistinctly, strictly speaking outsider art is not the same as art naif, art brut or primitive art. You and I can make art brut. We cannot make outsider art, which is by definition the art made by society OUTSIDERS with an urge to express themselves. Often mentally ill, or isolated from society for some reason, they usually have little or no art training or knowledge of art history, and live and make art in a world of their own. They do not much care to show or sell their work, when they do it is usually prompted by others.
I am a painter, and I could fake outsider art, but it would be a lie. Actually, a lot of so-called outsider artists are phonies, mediocre mainstream artists faking it.The best way to market your work if you have little skill and talent is to promote it as outsider art. Maybe they came up with this strategy, maybe their marchands and galleries did.
Some of my favourite outside artists: Henry Darger, Bill Traylor, Carlo Zinelli, Adolf Wolfli, Martín Ramírez, Arthur Bispo do Rosário, Raúl Javiel Cabrera (Cabrerita). Look them up and you will see what I am talking about. Cheers.
Well said, Aquelpibe. I came to the same conclusion in making the video: I can't make "Outsider Art" because I know better- it would be a fake. All I can do is try to channel some of the unbridled spirit and raw energy of the real thing.
