I was making a "patch" for RBY that injected some code into the save file to give it the Smogon clause rules. Sleep and Freeze clauses were easy. But Counter? That still gives me nightmares.
Ironically it would actually be easier to just fix Counter entirely than try to detect all the edge cases to force it to fail like on Smogon. All you'd need to do to patch it is have the side that got paralyzed to reset the "last move used" variable to the previous value when it gets paralyzed and the move is fixed. That would prevent desyncs since both cartridges would be checking the same move to see if Counter fails or not. But in order to detect if a desync would have happened, the other player needs to know whether or not the move selected would have caused a desync, but when a mon gets paralyzed, it only sends over that the mon is paralyzed and not the move it used. As a result, you'd need to actually have the patch use the link cable functions to send over the selected move, which is a bit trickier than just reading values from RAM. That's where I ended up getting stuck since I didn't understand how that worked at the time. I'll probably resume the project in the future, though. I had some neat ideas, like throwing in a party editor and even a way to make your player sprite show up as an NPCs to the other cartridge.

The only solution is to update showdown with every single feature rby has until ladder becomes equally unable as it does on cartridge
Just wanted to take a minute to lyk that you're my favorite youtube channel and I can see the enormous amount of effort you put into these projects. Your pokemon cryptid video is one of my favorite pieces of art ever created by man or beast
My favorite part about this video is the part where a Jimothy Cool video is partially watched through and that implies we can now get a crossover about Gen 3 vs Gen 1 and which one is truly sillier
I'm so entertained by this old god of pokemon UA-cam Tell ing me the dark intricacies of counter in generation one of the beautiful game, I'm locked in
I just realized that the Simpsons references inextricably link these videos with Big Yellow’s videos
Don't you hit me with that Stuart Little 3 music. I was like "it couldn't be" but I went to the description to check and it was. Nostalgia hurts man.
Monster Rancher is going in Combo Breaker and now Reverend is teasing an MR video
What a year to be a Monster Rancher fan
Wake up babe, new reverend video
Starting off with breadbug music was a masterclass idea
Being able to paralyze your opponent after you get hit by a physical move and RNG into a free counter proc is so funny.
Counter has to be one of the most underrated moves in Gen I. Even today, there are professionals who still believe it's useless in competitive.
I'm not a programmer, but I get the feeling that Counter looks like a programming student's final project if said student had a week to work on it and did it all in one night.
Actually thank you, this got me into gen 1 competitive
I'm just commenting to help with your algo.
I just wanted to say that I learned the Japanese name for Sheer Cold, the OHKO ice move, is "Absolute Zero" - and that name is like 100,000% more awesome, that now the name Sheer Cold hits with the impact of like a nice satin handkerchief being draped across your face.
They probably changed it because it'd be too long
@@R.P.Genocraftmoves like "Shadow Punch" and "Sky Uppercut" are the same number of characters and introduced in the same generation...
Night slash is pretty cool too, Japanese name is "crossroad killing"
@@DJFracus those are 1 character shorter...
I love how Plinkett changed history and how things are presented interestingly
Redlettermedia's plinkett videos were a godsend to the review genre. AVGN and Nostalgia Critic era was just screaming spergs throwing props around on camera while treating the clips of the actual subject as if it were B-roll.
Then the Phantom Menace review rolls in and everyone realizes that a well edited video with dry humor that focuses on the subject over everything else is what a comedy review should look like.
That's cool that there's a special message telling you that it's doing custom logic to avoid what would be a desync in the vanilla game
You would not believe how stoked I was to watch this. Thank you Reverend.
Absolutely love the editing! I really enjoy deep dives on buggy metagame mechanics
Love the editing you put in this video! You deserve more views
this is like the mike stoklasa of pokemon youtubers and i mean that as an absolute complement
What good timing, I was just binge rewatching a bunch of Reverend videos yesterday! Stellar, as always. I especially like the brief appearance of the Darkest Dungeon stress crown
countering your own explosion. that is impressive.
some day this will be shown in an art gallery
