Awesome video and reviews. Gelati and Peccati in North Park is authentic and everything is good, especially the Lussuria. Pizza Bella in Old Town is great, especially the Sigma-Chi.
I think the show's format with the music choice + b-roll combo is unmatched. I'm tired of the ubiquitous license free hip hop/trap beats in all the other videos on UA-cam these days. good pacing, lo-fi/jazzy beat in the background behind the dialogue is *chefs kiss*. This channel captures the SD essence. good work
Having lived in San Diego since 1993 I can say you definitely hit some of the best spot. Bronx Pizza was my home for years because I lived a block away. Two spots I also love are Mr. Motos and Isola in Little Italy. Great video.
I was born in San Diego in 1980 and lived in Kensington. when it comes to the best there is none other than Venice Pizza House on El Cajon Blvd. Since 1954. It makes me sad its not on your list. I recommend "The Works" or the #12 as it used to be referred to. I now live in Murrieta, CA and I will not hesitate to drive the 70 miles to get that pizza.
@Gary Denison - that's funny, I've gone to Venice with friends a few times, but 1) it was several years ago and 2) we always got pasta, which was also excellent, btw. I'll have to check out the pizza. What is their best?
Planning to try square after watching your video Always looking for places to eat. I live in Claremont would love to hear any good Mexican food around balboa and convoy area. What are the best restaurants on convoy?
Great video. Bronx is always a favorite and I just had a pizza at Buona Forchetta a couple of weeks ago for a friend’s birthday. Both great places and appreciate these other recommendations - will give them a try.
CT native that just visited San Diego. So happy to see the New Haven style bar pizza represented. The hot honey pizza (locally usually called the Hot Lips or the Stinger depending where you go) is a favorite for sure. And potato pizza, for whatever reason, is really popular too. Great looking pies all around!
@@rich8381 Never been to Basic, but I got a large cheese pie from URBN on doordash and legit ate the whole thing. It was one of the best pizzas I've ever had.
Ahhh I used to love this one! I used to go there when the original creator and owner was there, before he passed. Their pizza was my favorite in SD when I lived there. Almost suggested it but wasn’t sure if it was as good anymore. They used to add real fresh grated big chunks of Parmesan on top and that was incredible. :P
Hi Gareth, Thanks for this video. I'm visiting San Diego from San Francisco. I ate at Buona Forchetta tonight and it was AMAZING! Tutti Motto Benne--Grazie!
Thanks guys. You motivated me and in the middle of a three hour mountain bike ride I ordered a Square pizza. It was the only thing that kept me going on the ride and it ABSOLUTELY EXCEEDED my, already high, expectations!! Thank you.
The problem I found in San Diego is no consistency in the pizzas. One is the pizza can be great for a little while then next can be not so great. Like when new owners take over and they try to maximize profits by skimping on ingredients while charging more for the pizza. It's like a hit or miss game.
I've been to Square Pizza many times when I visit San Diego. Best pizza ever! Fred's pizza are just amazing! I was drooling when they brought out that Detroit. I need another trip back to P.B. soon to get my fix!! They also have Brazilian cheese bread that melts in your mouth. Holy hell - this video was great. It's making me so hungry now! 🙂
I grew up eating the white pizza @ the Bronx Pizza. Then got a roommate who worked at Leftys so grew to love that too but that Detroit pizza looks delicious.
Born, raised, and still here 60 years later. You did a nice job! Especially the end where you suggest that "...there's 5 for you to try...". Despite the title! For "best" I might have gone more old-school established SD spots, but since you're new to SD? Kidding, but comparatively speaking you are... Good job, fun video.
Another set of places to add to the food tour! Personal favorite pizza places of mine are Sicilian Thing Pizza in North Park and Pizza E Birra on India St.
Definitely love your choices. I’ll have to check out the last spot you were at. Looks delicious. My favorite pizza in SD is hands down Tribute Pizza in North Park. You gotta try Brooklyn’s Best and add pepperoni and garlic mushrooms. The best!
Out of these places I've only tried Buona Forchetta which is my favorite for neopolitan style. I've heard from a few people that Lefty's quality has gone down hill over the last 5 years so it hasn't been on my list of places to try. I really want to check out URBN and square the most. My favorite spots are Tribute and Regents Pizzaria. I love how they like to experiment and offer unique pizza's of the month.
Great to see this! Buona Forchetta is my favorite in SD, followed by Blind Lady Ale House. A good note about Buona Forchetta is that their gluten-free crust is amazing and, arguably, even better than the regular crust. No joke! I haven't tried Lefty's, Square, or Bronx yet but will soon. Thanks!
@@brandonward2708 As far as I know, they posted up right by the entrance of Leftys with a portable pizza oven and started selling pizza and talking down to the workers at Leftys. I'm not sure if there are other things they have done, but for that, I will not support them.
Square Pizza is amazing!!! Definitely Detroit style. These guys are spot on - it looks like it's a very heavy Chicago deep dish but it's really light. Love that place!
This was a really good review of San Diego pizza. As someone that is new to the area (1 year) I still don't know anything about the city. Item of note, the Detroit style place offers by the slice.
This was such a fun video, man! I loved seeing you and your friends enjoy the Chicago-style pizza. Chicago-style gets a lot of hate from a lot of people, but as a Chicagoan myself, I love it! Looks like a super fun day overall. You can't go wrong when it's a day filled with pizza, right?
I'd pick Bronx Pizza as my, 'I need a real NY slice', it looks spot on. I'd love an Italian beef from Lefty's, (Chicago has fantastic thin crust/square cut, super yummy). That bacon potato looked to die for, the pesto punch as well. When you described Squares, I can imagine that pillowy lightness vesseling those tomatoes and cheese and basil... If you're ever up north, Golden Boy delivers that amazing pillowy goodness with each bite a flavor bomb, clams and garlic. It's perfect. I love yummy food and I love pizza, right next to classic deli heros/hoagies/subs, whatever you like to call them. A great slice, Bronx Pizza for this show, can sit right next to a great sandwich with no problems whatsoever. They're best friends for life. 🤗👍🤌🌻
My guy Fred! Hardest worker in the biz. Traditional Fred fashion to drive down from Julian on his day off to make 1 pizza. Long Live Square Pizza! Go get a hot slice. Eat it there while it's hot and grab a bag of frozen slices to bring home.
Love all these places! Knew Matteo before Buona Forchetta, so happy for his family's success! Another spot I can't get enough of is Venice Pizza House on 33rd and El Cajon. Oh shoot: shout out to Blind Lady and their egg and bacon pizza.
Mom's Pizza Sorrento Valley had a focaccia-like crust that's to die for. Pauly's Pizza Joint for NY style (get their Christmas Pie) and BLAH (Blind Lady Ale House) for the greatest small artisan pizzas.
Mona Lisa in Allied Gardens. 4th generation SD Native, been to em all. The only thing that makes me slightly regret leaving, it sure isn't the people, or traffic, or crooked cops and courts! Bronx Pizza, URB Pizza, and Lefty's looked BOMB. Not a big fan of Neopolitan style pizza. I know. I know. It's the closest thing to "real" pizza, but I'm more of an American pizza connoisseur. Both pies from URB looked so delicious. Will definitely hit 'em up next time I'm in Daygo. Thanks again, G.
Volare on Barnett near Midway is a real historic treasure. Small family run and authentic. Lunch specials are a deal. Not a just a pizza joint it has picatta, marsala and seafood as well. Don't be in a hurry because it's made fresh when you order.
If you're trying pizza in SD, you have to try moms pizza and pasta in Sorrento valley. Full disclaimer, I work there, but we do have excellent pizza. In the top 3 best category 2 years running. We've only been open for 1.5 years
Love that you shouted out Ambrosio 15 and Tribute (you should have also shouted out that Buona Forchetta's Gluten-Free Pizza is literally the best on earth).
I’ve tried the 4 out of the 5. Buona Forchetta is by far my favorite. That’s if you’re into authentic Italian style pizza. Basic pizza is okay IMO. I haven’t been to square pizza but that’s because I tend to stay away from PB. 😂
I sorely miss TK's Pizza- I grew up in Fairport until I moved here in the mid 80s after high school. How can we convince Nick to open a location here? Heck - even a TK's pizza truck would kill it here! Yes, you can find good pizza in San Diego...but nothing like TK's - a great, simple, everyday pizza.
Sicilian Thing and The Pizza Standard are some of my favorite spots that weren't mentioned. The mashed potato pizza from URBN has a special place in my heart tho.
LOL, I used to work down the street from Bronx Pizza. I was told to go and as my first experience the see a giant fly in the pizza display lol. I still ordered
I know both the owners of square pizza and buona forchetta! Both are awesome places but you should try Buona garage in Coronado and then definitely Matteo's which is Owens by Co owner Matteo and also try gelati y peccati. Part of the Buona family but not all Owens by the other co owner marko
I’m a born and raised New Yorker, now living in CA. Go up the coast a little to Solana Beach and go to Borgiornos on Steven’s Ave. owned by 2 New Yorkers. When my mother from NY visited me she would always make me stop there before going to my house. They sell pizza by the slice. My fav Sausage and Pepperoni. Try one of their Stromboli’s
I'm a San Diego native and Lefty's has been my favorite since they opened. But you can't compare Bronx and Lefty's...they're two different animals. I've only had leftovers from a togo order from Square and all the flavors were top notch and the caramelization of the crust was to die for(need to go have it fresh and hot). Porno Porchetta(Sp?) looked top notch...gotta try. Urban looked great too...but I've had bad luck at Basic(their crust sucked).
Detroit square FTW!!!! Check out Angry Pete’s in SD for some authentic Detroit slices, he has a home in Desi’s Point Loma and also does some brewery pop ups.
I haven't been out and about since the covid thing started, but the first thing I usually do when moving to a new area is find the best pizza. I used to live in south Orange County for most of my life and moved to Phoenix to help my parents, and now back in San Diego. I have tried about five different places and tried to go to Bronx Pizza but got so frustrated by the parking situation I gave up. A couple of months ago I finally tried Luigi's in North Park which was one of the best pizzas I have found, and I still have a few on my list to try.
Bona Forchetta is hands down the best in San Diego. BUT if your willing to travel a little go to Temecula and try out The Goat & Vine, hands down my favorite.
Good shit my guy. You never fail on the proper rec's. Bronx before Luigi's but Luigi's does hold it down. Honorably mention to @pizzakaiju, and of course @its_breadandbutter cus their pizza pop-ups are a @boodlefightsd favorite! ✨ ... also it's not fair, but Prince St. came to town, so you gotta mention them too! 🤙🏽
They make some great little pizzas at The Blind Lady Ale House and Hillcrest Brewing, just in case you want to do some more, less trendy, pizza locations. Hell, I would even throw in Napoleon's in National City, just because it is an old spot.

Square is so fucking good. Worth the trip.
What are the best tomatoes you mentioned in the video? Fun video. Our next trip will definitely include pizza.Thank you.
Bianco DiNapoli
Love this! Been to Bronx and Leftys so gotta hit the other spots.
I grew up in San Diego and you guys were literally right around the corner from the best Pizza. Filippis!!!
For the life of me I have no idea why some people like Filipis. They just like having their toppings steamed under mediocre cheese maybe?
Sicilian Thing and The Pizza Standard are some of my favorite spots that weren't mentioned. The mashed potato pizza from URBN has a special place in my heart tho.
I gotta try those two!! 👍
love sicilian thing, having both ny and thick crust pizzas is very nice.
LOL, I used to work down the street from Bronx Pizza. I was told to go and as my first experience the see a giant fly in the pizza display lol. I still ordered
The detroit style rocks
Mt. Moto's in North Park is pretty good too. All the yes to Lefty's and Bronx!
I know both the owners of square pizza and buona forchetta! Both are awesome places but you should try Buona garage in Coronado and then definitely Matteo's which is Owens by Co owner Matteo and also try gelati y peccati. Part of the Buona family but not all Owens by the other co owner marko
There's also an Urbn at One Paseo in Carmel Valley/Del Mar. The potato pizza is my fave hands down.
Damn 😂😂 Super long intro for the pizza expert friend, then "this is Shag" 😂
Great looking pizza 🍕 Definitely planning a San Diego foodie trip soon!
😁 Smiling over here. 😁 Your videos always make me smile. Also, I miss San Diego and I love seeing your food videos around town.
Thank you so much! 🙌
100% true!
I love the fact that you know all of these places. Respect for your foodie adventures my friend 👊
Detroit square FTW!!!! Check out Angry Pete’s in SD for some authentic Detroit slices, he has a home in Desi’s Point Loma and also does some brewery pop ups.
I've been hearing great things about Angry Pete's as well, I gotta go check them out! Thanks Erica!! 👍
OMyG Sooo Amazing So Excited ToTryThe1InPBI🩷PB👍👍👍
Awesome Video!!! But it needs a follow up…
La Bella’s in Chula Vista!! Been around since 1955.
As well as the original Filipi’s Pizza in little Italy.
LA BELLAS PIZZA!!! Papa’s favorite is the best
I've been going to La Bellas since the 80's. It use to be way better back in the day, when the OG owners were still around, but it's still good.
That’s it’s Bronx u gave up on and Luigi’s? What else u try?
Scuderie Italia has the best Neapolitan style pizza in SD hands down. Buona and Caffe Calabria are close seconds
Thanks dude, we're going to San Diego in about 10 days,we're going to try to hit all places
