When I was very little, 2-3 yrs old, we lived in a rural area that was being developed into subdivisions. It was Chatham, a suburb of Springfield, Illinois. We lived in a ranch home who’s yard was adjacent to a farm. Back in those days - our moms would leave us little well-behaved kids outside to play in the sandbox, play on the swing set, etc.. Anyway, once in a while one or two of the VERY LARGE pigs would get out & come into our yard!! OMG, the huge pigs terrified me! I remember beating on the screen door, which I could not open, screaming and crying for my mom to get that door open so I could get inside!

Hogs are really, really smart. My grandfather told me about "running " the hogs in the woods and on harvested crop fields. We had 5 brooder coupes for the sow to have her liter in and to stay out of the weather. We are in northeast Indiana.

Dutch, I was fortunate to have a dad that loved growing his own food. He butchered his own hogs & built his own smoke house. It still stands(needs a roof) but you can still smell the smoke @ meat smell all these years later. Great video ‼️👏🏻👏🏻💖🇺🇸

I knew it! LOL! I just got finished watching Misty's video where she said they were having friends coming for the weekend, and you hadn't put out a video is a couple of days. I thought, they are at the Mac's place! Sure enough, there you were! LOL! Colby and Misty have such a well set up farm/ranch. I really admire them for being so self sufficient. I attended your Okie Homestead Expo and really enjoyed their presentations. Great video, Dutch. Thank you for sharing this. God bless you all!

My parents raised pigs for our family food and processed them themselves. Also raised chickens for eggs and food. When my parents were ready to butcher they had 2 or 3 of my adult cousins volunteer to help and after I was married my husband and I helped mom cooked and we got our bellies filled with some good food including fresh pork and dad sent the volunteers home with processed pork.

I had a piney woods rooter (she was red), bottle fed her and finally moved her to a pen outside, with a roof and pool to play in. I let her out daily and controlled her with a 12 inch ruler, like a show pig. Lol. She was too jealous of the dog so she had to go. Very intelligent, loyal as a pet, animal for sure!

Great way of doing things. You know what you're getting. We went in with 3 other family members and bought a steer from a farmer they knew to have it processed. The steaks and roast were good, not as good as expected. But the ground beef was horrible. I think it was spoiled, it didn't stink when opened the package but while frying or cooking it had a funny smell and it tasted terrible. It ended up in the garbage, but some of the others said some of theirs was OK, some not. I think the processor sold us the meat from a different steer, an older on from the way the meat was. We took that ground beef back to them, but they didn't believe us and wouldn't refund the money. They said we probably didn't get it frozen right away or thawed it in a way so that it spoiled. I was so mad, such a waste of money.

You need to get your kids raising pigs in 4H. I had hogs that I raised not even have 5 pounds of back fat. I walked them outside their pen a hour a day. Me I liked Durrocs and Hampsire cross breeds for their leaner meat but I had to be more careful with the Durrocs to get the gain for them to make weight because they were so lean.
