I think Tappei (the writer of Re:Zero) thinks more on the idea of Psycology but through the thought process of Moral Absolutes - Subaru’s Pride is what first triggers this kind of spiral. Not just his unwillingness to call for help, but that he must be the one to solve the problem of Elsa. He hates the fact that Reinhard on his own could beat Elsa, and hates the fact that he cannot solve the problem on his own. His unwillingness to find others to help, his insistence that he can find the solution (something weirdly enough you can tell he was doing with Emilia in the first loop) and his own inability to read social que’s ends with his mind being pushed more in fight or flight without letting himself relax and to recenter himself. That is Subaru’s pride at least as I understand it. (Also throughout the story, it’s clear that Tappei likes to go for more broad versions of each of the Sins, implying that you might need to look at a broader definition of each sin than what is generally thought of. We see this with Betelgeuse claiming being dead or your message not making it to the person as “Slothful” as well with Echidna’s Greed being for knowledge, not property or money as it’s usually associated.)

"Can you really call Subaru evil?" If you can't call Subaru evil when he betrays and slaughters everyone, (does everything you skipped so as not to trigger people in the middle of the video)and destroys an entire nation for a stranger he is obsessed with, then you can't call anything evil. Moral relativism really causes some silly comments sometimes.

That's why I consider what if's are not the what if stories but the what if Subaru's. The change is not because of a fate that has dragged Subaru. It's because he chose a different path because he is a different Subaru. Mainline Subaru would never ever try to kill all the kingdom for any reason

Its a matter of frame work to me.
Seeing things through the Sin relations or seeing things through the human relations.
Pride is simply believing your right at the cost of basically everything else; that inability to recognize a need for help because your emotional and or mental drive demands that you alone are enough. Pride becomes Vainglory when this level goes beyond the scope of mortal factors and reaches the divine. in scope of view.
I liked this Iff story summary because it points out what the LN made obvious about early Barasu. He tackles to much on his own.

If you’re wonering about Roswaal’s actions, it is unclear what his gospel is saying.
Personally, I believe he lost all hope in arc 2 when Subaru didn’t arrive, and that the gospel deviated.
However, due to his agreement with Ram, Roswaal now has to at least act like he’s alive.
Oh, and Rem is most likely dead to a mabeast curse, so Ram only has Roswaal left now.
However, I think Subaru’s singleminded dedication to a single cause gave Roswaal something to live for.
EX stories 2 and 3 shows us how Roswaal is willing to make decisions in the heat of the moment that somewhat contradict his gospel, just to save someone because he (or rather she at that point) admired that someone’s singleminded dedication to their wife.
Basically, this Subaru is someone Roswaal admires, because it validates the lengths he himself has gone just so he could revive Echidna at the end.

The reason we brand it as prideful isn’t nessecarily because we are judging, but rather, it’s because the story generally takes the broadest possible definition of each of the seven deadly sins and applies it to how the characters view the world.
For instance, under christian definition, not all forms of pride are sinful.
Feeling pride after accomplishing something, or after doing something charitable, is good, because it is a motivator.
It’s when you take an attitude of pride without having something to back it up, where people often fall into the trap of using the motivator that is pride to justify injustice.
Re: Zero does away with the distinction between good pride and bad pride.
The way that Tappei sees sin (in a narrative sense at least), is purely as a motivating emotion/mindset.
Whether the actions are right or wrong is always up for interpretation, but Tappei always makes sure to show us where the pitfalls of each deadly sin lie.
Basically, it is a way to dissect the morality of the concept of the seven deadly sins, in order for the reader to learn how to interpret them, without judging a good person as being sinful, when they didn’t do anything unjustifiable. It is an exploration of the thin line between good and evil.

ofc, Subaru was evil. Evil simply means "harm". We have such concepts as natural evil, where there is no responsible moral agent for the "evil". Be it illness, tornado or even an icicle that falls upon your head. But Subaru is far from natural evil. In this route he is just an evil person, who ruined thousands of lives.
