- Hi guys - welcome back to my channel. One frequent question I get not only from you guys here on UA-cam, but my own friends as well, is what an investment banker actually does. There are a lot of misconceptions and confusion about what my role actually consists of and what I do.
In this video, I explain the role of an investment banker, what a regular day in the office looks like, and some of the tasks I actually do. I hope this video was helpful in clearing some air and demystifying what actually goes on in this role.
Let me know if there are any other videos that you guys would like to see, as well as if you have any questions down in the comments section below. I love to hear from you guys.
As always, it really helps me a lot if you like the video and subscribe (if you haven't already). When you do subscribe, make sure to turn on the bell so you're notified whenever I post a new video.

Angela: investment bankers don’t really work with stocks
99.99% of the world: NANI!?
Haha I know it's crazy!!
Gary: this is true, because an investment banker != a professional trader or risk manager (quant). AFAIK the biggest money is earned by bond, forex and commodities trader.
You have a good channel that actually explains what this career does, thanks for the videos
Thanks a lot for watching!
Aww the dog is so cute. Appreciate the video and keep it up 😊💯
He is adorable! Thanks again for watching 😄
Your responsibilities are epic. Can you make a video on time management/ organization for someone trying to emulate?
Yes happy to!
Dog looks so cute like a baby!😍 plus thanks angela i am following you i am about to start in my college with major in finance.
He is honestly like a big baby! Best of luck with everything, and thanks for watching!
Could you do a video on Excel & PowerPoint tips & tricks (or the best shortcuts)? I’m starting my IB analyst job soon and I would love to get some practical tips that can save me time :)
Hi Zoey! Yes I'm happy to :)
I’ve worked as a programmer for my whole career, but I’ve always found this career path so interesting
I'd be interested in knowing more about programmers too!
Ha, nothing interesting, just meetings and sitting in front of a screen... 🕰 👨💻 🕰

Love your videos Angela, looking forward to watching more!

🤣🤣 that clip when bubbles says HELP ME!
But no joke investment banking is definitely not what I assumed and thought. I was way off in regards to your career. Wow you need to be good at excel, PowerPoint and math and I bet A LOT of math.
Unfortunately I'm horrible at all 3😭 but I love finance so much!
Thanks so much for watching! Yup good amount of all 3, but the math definitely isn't difficult. As long as you can add and subtract it's a good start haha
Hi Angela! Great video and explaination. I'm glad youtube's algo recommended your channel. Subbed and liked =)
Thanks so much Gee! Thankful for the YT algorithm
I love your videos so much; I’m currently looking into how to get into investment banking as a 3rd year student. Your videos are very helpful

Such clear explanation and right to the point 👍 Which school did you go to Angela ?
Thanks, appreciate it! NYU

Hi Angela, your videos are indeed helpful, I really love them. I am working on my graduate degree right now, and want to know if age is a evaluation points when HR recruiting the entry level positions at IBD apartment? I will reach 28 years old when I graduate from graduate school, and people saying IBD jobs are for young guys, especially at entry level positions.
You will be the right age to join as an associate. For an analyst position, they generally hire straight out of undergrad hence the younger age, so it will be more difficult to get one of those positions
@@angelasunx3 Thx for the information Angela, I hope getting an analyst internship during summer vacation would help me to get opportunities for IBD jobs.
@@Lunarwolf004 Best of luck!
Very helpful video Angela! You can get into investment banking straight out of college right? No masters needed?
Hi Ananya - yes you can! For analyst positions

Hopefully I too convert into IBs or consultant front desk jobs . ✌️✌️

Can you make a video on how to networking like hell ?
There are a few videos on my channel focused on networking if that helps
Angela quick question; I’ve networked with many individuals in the industry and have had great coffee chats, should I maintain those relationships and keep in touch?
Yes you should! Always good to maintain relationships, especially if you are looking for positions in the industry
Please do a reaction video to the show Industry, been binging it
I'm planning to!
Curious if you pick the name from "Bubble Tea"? LOL
Surprised to see the great chemistry within the same analyst class in a bb firm. More likely because of the norm in the industry, the firm culture or just great people within the group?
Combination of great people + spending a lot of time with each other due to the long hours. Chose it because he had a really bubbly personality as a puppy!
How many projects would you say you are on at a given time? Like 1 pitch 1 live financing 1 live m&a?
Usually about 3-5 active projects at a time ranging from pitches to live deals
Awh the baby !!!
I know!!
Question!
When a company issues an IPO, who exactly gets first dibs? I’ve been seeing for example DoorDash and Airbnb the IPO price was gonna be around $50-$68 but then it went to over $140 upon initial offering to the public.
Why does this price increase?
Do those people who get first dibs have to invest X amount of dollars for X amount of time in order to obtain that stock at that $68 price?
Yep so the people who get "first dibs" are investors who pay the IPO price (generally institutional investors who have relationships w the banks in the syndicate) and once the stock begins to trade the supply and demand will determine the opening price.
@@angelasunx3 thank you :3
Hi Angela, would love to know more about the competition in different investment banks?
As in competition within the bank amongst coworkers, or competition amongst dif banks?

Ok thank you for making this. So if I were to become a investment banker what should I go to college for?
Finance degree would be most relevant
I’m a freshman at a average university. I want to potentially become an investment banker but I have no idea where to start.
I'd start off with getting relevant experience through internships and clubs to try and make yourself stand out
@@angelasunx3 thank you so much! Also love your videos
GENERALLY
Is it necessary to have a degree in Finance to be an investment banker? How are the chances of getting an offer from outside the US?
Nope not necessary at all, but helpful. It's possible! Especially if you've had relevant experience.
Is there anything common bw the bankers shown in movies and real life ?
To some degree, but there are a lot of exaggerations on stereotypical personalities in movies / tv shows
@@angelasunx3 thought so about the glamour and fancy part . 😅😅
Is it possible to get into Investment Banking if you have a MS in Data Science degree from a top (target) university?
Yes plenty of people go into IB without having majored in something super relevant (such as finance)
@@angelasunx3 ohh that's good hear. It will be great if you could make a video on how non-finance people can get into IB straightout of college. And I love your videos. Thanks for putting out such amazing content !
Love from South Africa♥️♥️
Aw thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Hi Angela do investment bankers drink coffee to make themselves awake ?
Is it necessary for investor blanker to drink alcohol while making a deal with their clients?
Yes to coffee, and no to alcohol. These deals are usually done in meeting rooms.
So investment bankers can't manage their time to do Trading? as it's relevant to put our money on the stock market nowadays. Investment Banker must have good knowledge of investing in stocks as a matter of creating their wealth. Don't you think so?
Investment bankers are limited in what they can invest in due to the nature of the job (a lot of NPI)
@@angelasunx3 What NPI stands for? So investment bankers can't do trading, Index funds, Gold, debentures, bonds n all ?
@@aryanrana9025 Non public information - very limited, and everything has to be disclosed.
@@angelasunx3 so what about Investment Banking Trader? Do they face the same problem? And what is going to be if one makes their demat a/c in the name of any family member?
@@aryanrana9025 S&T likely doesn't face the same issue since they deal w the public markets, whereas we deal w private. Secondly, with a few exceptions, it isn't allowed to open up a trading account in someone else's name.
9-8 damn thats 11 hrs how on earth can sombebody do that much for 6 days a week. thats nuts. i think software enigneers make more and also have to work lesser number of hours.
Usually past 8PM! ~15 hours is average
@@angelasunx3 idk how much of it is true i was thinking of going in IB but these hours are impossible for me. i can think of thee hours if 2 days weekend is off but i have heard you guys work on saturdays too.:(
@@subarashi516 Weekends are unpredictable - some weekends you'll have to work, while others you won't. On average would say a couple of hours of work every weekend.
@@angelasunx3 thanks a lot angela for answering. could you say how much total comp a banker can earn say around 10-15 years down the line ? very little data is available about it on the interenet. if possible can you make a video comparing the salaries of the bankers and software engineers at different stages of their career 5,10 years etc. you can refer to the salary structures of software engineers at levels.fyi they are pretty accurate
@@subarashi516 Happy to make a video on comps for bankers as they move up - it's really based on your performance and how much revenue you bring in. I'd say 15 years in likely making close to 7 digits all-in
So sounds like trying to find an undervalued small fish company for the big fish to buy. And if done legit get a cut off that deal. The rest is paperwork.
And then there are some.
Yup yup one way to think of M&A!
What degree would you recommend for Investment banking? Master's or MBA?
MBA
I'll be starting as an Analyst in late May. Is it typical to have 60 days to pass all three required exams and is that enough time to prepare while on the job?
Usually people take prior to starting on the desk, and during training - it's enough time
@@angelasunx3 Thanks! Did you need to buy any study material online (knopman material) or was everything provided by the bank?
Cute, I mean the dog, I mean both of you 😃
Thanks!
Is it common to see international students or immigrants working in IB or other industries like AM, PE etc in NYC? How tough would you say it is for someone in another country to secure an analyst role in NY?
Yes definitely! Oftentimes though, they did college or MBA in the US
@@angelasunx3 I was thinking about going the MBA route. Those who take that route typically enter as an associate?
@@matgame2 Yup that's correct. I know of people who have done MBA, Associate, then PE Associate, so definitely possible.
