"You act as though you are playing dice and want to risk everything on a single roll, but it is not my custom to choose the short course over the best course." - Maru
My interpretation of Maru's use of the 211 is that he is fully intending to win by being cost efficient enough throughout the game that Zerg can take one of his bases and he will still out-last them. Each time he plays an aggressive multi prong style he takes a lot of damage to run-byes so he seems to me to be preferring to play a safe and solid style where eventually Zerg has to come kill him before they run out of money. My guess would be that he has found that it is too hard/inconsistent to kill Zerg before they get to Lurkers so just go for max cost efficiency from the start of the game instead of going for killing blows.
i was actually saying this same thing to a friend of mine the other day. Maru plays the game from the very start in such a way that FORCES the zerg to take both corner bases or crush him before it gets to a lategame. the split army 2 pronged widow mine opener strikes me as a big example of this
zerg just has too many EASY ways to defend against early aggression. Queens shuts down almost everything, and banes are the #1 fucking OP unit in the whole game
Such an epic defense - so many sensor towers + some semi static defense with Libs really allowed for his army to stay near the center where he could react to everything. Any flanking maneuvers done by Serral were quickly squashed despite this being a large map. Amazing control of the game. Makes me really appreciate his spacing and understanding of army positioning. Great demo review.
Absolute respect to the goat Maru. What a virtuoso. Watching Maru is like watching Bobby Fisher play chess. Also, shoutout to the caster! I find the context very insightful (like when you tell us what maps are tough for certain players or what situation a player is facing as I as a beginner don’t see those angles)
Saw this game and it stuck out to me (amazing series too). Glad to see some analysis instead of just a cast. Maru has been doing bio into mech for a long time (since HotS?) but really started to nail it around 2018 or later.
It feels like the anti-Maru meta depends on constraining his economy and blocking his expansions and trying to get enough of a supply advantage in the midgame to end it then, because the longer the game goes the more inevitable Maru's victory becomes.
I think what dream has been doing is interesting. Just cos its different. And that was good by Maru. Byaun's late game has been improving. There is a general rule in TvZ, and if you break it, you end up getting overrun. You have to continue to upgrade you plus one two three, bio mech. If you stop for too long, you tend to get overrun.
Not really. Brood lord does damage through broodlins, which is melee damage. The way Maru kill broodlords is with Thors and snipes. It will still take the same number of hits to die from those two attacks.
Great video as always. Lots of great insight, thanks! Something that comes to mind is that, in my opinion, it wasn't a literally perfect game from maru. In the end he was just kinda using his bank and killing serral in a non cost efficient way. Just like a zerg usually tries to do it earlier in the match. I felt that the last three angages were kinda yolo from maru. A long game, the mind set was maybe stuck, but we can acctually see room for improvement even in this outstanding performance. In my perspective he won (by a large ammount) the economy match and then, in the end, he didn't care that much by perfection on how he would finish the match.
Thors are always attacking the broodlords! For the most part you can amove them, the blueflame hellbats take care of the broodlings. If your thors ever get stuck fighting smaller units you can target fire the broodlords, they should pretty much never be shooting anything else.
I am a noob, tried to copy Maru's countless CCs spread throughout the map. Doing well vs Medium AI until Vipers and BroodLords appear. Rush is easier to pull out though compared to BroodWar.
Ya Terran is a race that rewards Patience... Zerg is reliant on underhanded assaults.. their like the rogue assassin of StarCraft.. Protoss is the power house race... They like big army death balls
Been out of the loop so not sure what Maru has been winning but he did lose to Rogue pretty convincingly in GSL Super Finals. I'm not sure why games go so one sidedly one way or the other though. Would make for a good analysis if you get a hand on the replay. Why do Terrans sometime deal with 3rd runbys handily and other times lose all their 3rd base eco and essentially the game within the blink of an eye? Is it just a weakness of a particular build?
Pretty convincingly is a close 4-3 but yep he did lose that one, a lot of Zerg games are decided pretty early on. If they don't take any damage or the map is really favorable for them (maru vs rogue g7 for example) they can simply snowball and make too many units for Terran to handle.
@@uThermal You got me there with the 4-3. My Terran bias was seeping through and the games where Maru immediately dies to a counterattack on the 2nd/3rd or get steam rolled on the 7th game stuck to my mind. I suppose the map here favored Maru since he only denied a bit of creep and did no damage in the mid-game but was still fine. Or Serral was going for a different playstyle (maybe because of the map) and didn't go up to 90+ drones fast enough and spam ling bane lurker and kill Maru's eco with momentum like Rogue did in g7. Or maybe that happened but Maru had more backup CCs and lost less SCVs at the early stages of the big bane attacks in his game vs Serral.
I thought the best TvT late game is Ty. The best TvP is Maru. And Clem is soo good in the mid game in TvZ, that who is the best in the late game is up in the air. No one really stands out to me in TvZ late game as Terran. So this is going to be interesting.
so 29:32 is the smartest play, becasue it cahnges how the brood lord interact. SO broods are very hard ot kill because their creatures impeded forward movement, so if you have equal range or one more, you can push your units against a cliff on high ground and be able ot defend and kil lbrood lords much easier then attempting ot walk in on them, forcing the brood lords into you. Marus, strat is realyl reasonable, we cna see the frustration of the ramp was vision and on top of that the ramp isa pinch poitn so a lot of derping caused from the broodlings, which is way harder ot micro managed target fire when the fog of war is blinking nad you have units you would rather not be using ot attack, hellbats superb choice ot protect the thors... of course there not needed in teh top mathc up o nthat cliff side at 29.. and maru choose ot split up the middle nad cut hte creep which is a great way, sometime when itsa tough mathc I make simlair goals like pick a square in yoru head and you cut it out, keep in your mind how ot defend, but maru knows that hte bulk of serrals army is on teh left and it will take an enternity to attack his mineral line... and since serral is over protecting the left side it gives maru a great tactical advantage of the middle. If he can deny creep in teh middle he can go for some more interesting plays in the future of the game, but serral no having broods in a central position on the map, wil amke it difficult especaily since well maru has the high ground nad butted against the cliff side there. building against cliffs and corners are great since it limits the attack of melee units thus make it take longer.
Your enthusiasm is always such a joy. Happy you're part of the community!
Agree, very interesting analysis ! Keep going !

says Maru as he played proxy double rax every single game for an entire year while winning

serral focused to mmuch on hitting maru,s army when he could just take out bases on the other side with lings
the mech TvZ would be really appreciated

and Maru was doing all this at like 6am in the morning in Korea after playing all night...

maru deserves every dollar he makes
Maru is like the Mohammed Ali of Starcraft II
It almost seems like Maru gets the speed bonus on creep, he just walks all over it like it’s his
BEEEN WAITING FOR THIS IN A LOOONG TIME
There are many great terrans but only one who plays like Maru
100%
this is the reason people say, just play like maru
I've tried
Absolutely cool match up. Let’s get some more Maru Masterpieces man
Another great video! I am learning so mucho from this... :D
Well narrated gameplay dude. Looking forward to see more.

"if the ghost take damage the snipe canceles" why couldn't i hear it like 2 months ago
Hey sensei, how Maru is using his thors? He is clickling on broodlords individualy? Or is trying kill the broodlings and shoot the lords with A move?
Thors are always attacking the broodlords! For the most part you can amove them, the blueflame hellbats take care of the broodlings. If your thors ever get stuck fighting smaller units you can target fire the broodlords, they should pretty much never be shooting anything else.
@@uThermal would you have them all on high impact? Or vs a ton of blords is some splash better?
@@nathanstretch hey you should always be high impact unless you're 4.5k and they clump
@@nathanstretch I saw Maru mixing them up with a couple Thors on splash mode and the rest on high-imact.
Serral is great but there's just something about Maru that would put him a tier above everyone else. Maru is GOAT.
so cool to watch, thanks
that nuke DID kill 3 brood lords. it was missed on the original cast as well.
Unreal! Thank you brother
Thx as a Z player ive learned stuff to improve my zvt
